Jaffa, I understand if you can't see my problems, your not likely gonna fix them.

We can either work together to better inform and involve our community, or we can continue to fight for community support when things change.

I can see your problem: you didn't see the discussions you wanted to contribute to.

Believe me, I have no interest in fighting you. I have a toddler, it's 3am, and it's the last day of my holiday. I want to help you, and the community. Otherwise I'd be in bed and saving arguments with someone as to whether or not they can watch another Tikkabilla before school for tomorrow.

In the spirit of enlightened consensus, could you please address my points? How do you decide what's important to which people?

Andre or timeless aren't going to care about the sub-fora of "Alternatives", but they're both passionate about bugzilla configuration and usage. You (I'm guessing) care less.

How do I ensure that you see what you're interested in without making it too noisy for them (defeating the purpose if they unsubscribe from whatever central mechanism is available); or vice-versa?

I really see no reason to waste my time jaffa, and you should probably tend to your child. Your time would surely be better spent.

They may still unsubscribe for completely unrelated reasons. Like somebody asking a legal question, or something.

I'm sorry - I'm obviously failing to communicate with you, and I to accept the blame for this. Perhaps previous discussions have left too sour a taste in your mouth; perhaps I'm just not very good at explaining myself. Perhaps it's because I like to deal with specifics, and then generalise once the specific issues have been worked out? Does that sound feasible?

You're obviously enthusiastic, and have clear ideas - in your own head, at least - on how things could be done better.

I am really trying to avoid sarcasm, irony, facetiousness or duplicity: I just want to know how to make you happier and help solve the problems you see, whilst addressing the concrete concerns I can see on a day-to-day basis with your high-level proposals to date..

As I see it, the main issue isn't so much that we have too many different channels for discussion in and of itself, but that not everyone bothers with checking all of them. It was pointed out that aggregating everything would lead to too much noise, but what about aggregating notifications? The forums allow us to subscribe to threads, but that doesn't solve the problem of noticing the threads in the first place; the Planet blog isn't always relevant to everyone, and the Council blogs doesn't post things unless they're important to most people; not everyone likes mailing lists clogging up their inbox.
What I'm suggesting is not a central place for the content itself, but a central way to find out about content. Something that would pull in blog posts, recent forum threads, mailing lists, and filter them according to what the user cares about (this is vague, but a consistent tagging system could work), and merely send a daily digest (or whatever - user-configurable) of headlines to their inbox. Even if it wasn't perfect, IMO scanning a list of links with a few I might not care about is better than having to check 6 different places to find out the same information with even more noise.

Just my two bits - no idea if it's practical or if anyone else agrees, but that's what came to mind when I thought about it.
