I'm in a bit of a silly mood, having spent my weekend in Stratford watching in amazement as the weather went bonkers.

SLG's Opabinia is really well drawn and lively, I like it, thank you very much Great Little Genius! It's going to stay on my tablet's background.
Now, those segments of the sea critter resemble Maemo's "ae", don't they?

And, pb, sure I'm crazy :D it's my way of resisting

So glad you like it^^

I too like this little Opabinia more than the Narwhal ;) He's kinda cute!

Thanks, slg, for indulging me on the woodpecker, but I gotta say, this opabinia wins hands down. (If you wonder from whence comes the phrase hands down ... ) I applaud your effort as alchemical: you've successfully transmuted weird into cute.

Yeah the Opabinia is definitely my favorite of SLG's submissions so far. Nice job!

I'll be honest, none of the mascots, despite the effort, have said anything to me. Is there a reason, apart from fun (which I thought this thread was) in pursing a real mascot?

Well, I think most people here are just doing this for fun, but mascots can serve a valid purpose:

They make something more memorable for people who have visual memories. The name "maemo" is not going to stick in everyone's minds, but if you put a memorable cartoon figure next to it that may help them remember maemo. That's why so many companies use product logos, so that people remember the product itself.

A lot of memorisation techniques rely on people imagining creatures or objects that represent abstract ideas, because they may find it easier to remember an image of a solid object rather than non-physical facts and figures.

And if you look at open source, most of the logos are indeed pretty silly cartoon animals but they don't seem to have harmed the movement's chances of being taken seriously. A lot of Linux-based consumer devices now have a friendly penguin on the box.

Linux UK uses tux as it's favicon... you tell me if mascots work

Would moo-mo.org all be in lower case?

Re: Maemo (or maemo.org?) mascot proposal

Hmmm, lowercase is better. Also, I am not so sure about the dash now. I think it should be Moomo (for the mascot) and moomo.org for the site (lowercase is more "dynamic").

Purely so that the browser doesn't default to its own favicon. Notice its the Tux, Linux's mascot and not one connected to LinuxUK.

I can see where mascots help, I'm not questioning that, my question was more along the lines of does Maemo need a mascot?

Re: Maemo (or maemo.org?) mascot proposal

If we get to dress up our geekettes/better halves (as BSD folks do, see Devilette), the answer is yes. Must admit, the Opabinia is a much harder sell than the raccoon in that regard ;)

*hug* That's so nice^^

If you want any changes to Mr Woodpecker, let me know ;)

And thanks for the Link too ;) I love etymology and the like :D

I like the Opabinia too! Who would have thought that such a creepy looking creature could look nice ;) I guess it goes to show, you can't judge a book by it's cover! You have no idea how much I enjoyed creating that one^^

I was once chased by a cow in a forest... It was not a happy cow... And he did not like us being in his Forest... With only trees to hide behind it took as a long time to get back to the car... We never returned to those woods again! But I did get a photo of the cow as I accidently pushed the shutter while legging it! Boy can cows run!!

Anyway... Ever since then I have not been well disposed to Bovine...

But this little Moo is different ;) I could grow to like him, maybe... :p

SLG, that's great, I'd be happy with that.

If you want feedback though maybe the horns could be a bit more cow-like by curving them a bit or by making them less sharp?

The cow is fine now, a little curviness was all it needed. They looked a bit devil-ish before but now they're perfect. :-)

Well, someone else mentioned the raccoons stealing their catfood -- I'd bet the narwhals stole penguinbait's catfood.

So far, I think I like the Narwhal best.

I like the idea of a Maemo mascot, but anyone just dying to put some cutesy critter on something maemo-related can always take the conservative approach and tattoo a penguin with the "ae" across his stomach.

Okay, so maybe some devils have curved horns too...

But I still reckon the cow looks better now. :-)

Your Opabinia now happily stays on my desktop :)

Oh, and how would I like a poster of an Opabinia mummy with three or four cute Opababies following her, in warm, crystal-clear Cambrian seas...

These could be a metaphor of Maemo and its kde, debian, android, jaunty children (one of those children could be mer, just at the point of evolving into a lobster...) :)

But again, maybe I'm just getting crazy
