How about a magnifying glass attachment that you slide over the device to magnify the screen to 4.1 inches, and that doubles as a hard case? :D

Making screens smaller while retaining resolution is expensive. Although I doubt it applies to this situation, yes, everything else being equal, a smaller screen device would be more high-end.

Assuming a 1:1 pixel ratio, the bummer is this information:

n8x0:

800x480 10.5cm diagonal = 9cm x 5.4cm

iPod touch:

480x320 9cm diagonal = 7.5cm x 5cm

n900:

800x480 9cm diagonal = 7.7cm x 4.6cm

The point is that for many of us if Nokia was to err in this device class it makes more sense to err a bit larger, not smaller. In addition, it is entirely possible to get the N810 size down a bit overall while still retaining the same screen size.

And just as those of us preferring the larger screen cannot assume our use case is paramount, the converse is equally true... BUT the caveat here is that the move made here is to reduce viewable real estate, which is typically anathema. Please note that cell phone screens have been trending larger. In fact, if the device in question is more of a cell phone then it supports that trend.

The tablets represented a unique class that, while bulkier than cell phones, were still within the realm of totability without adding the bulk of, say, a netbook.

In other words, the N800 and N810 found a sweet spot that we hope Nokia does not completely abandon.

Currently 83 reading means this is a serious issue how nokia position this device will determine how well they would sell compared to the n810 wimax version total failure so please keep the screen size to the current.
Oh Mer when is the release date.

Now, I'm making peace with MULLF. ;) He just made the perfect add-on-gadget suggestion for Maemo-devices with screen sizes smaller then 4.1 inch. Gotta call our product designers...

I was referring to the (UIs) software you guys have brought to the tablets though, everything from Penguinbait's KDE to your full-fledged Debian and LXDE and everything else. But, yes, thanks, Nokia :D

(This was originally an edit to my first post, but things are moving so quickly in the thread, I decided to make it a separate post)

This amazing goodness is what makes my disappointment so intense -- putting a full desktop OS on a handheld, giving it a powerful processor, and then making the new hardware so difficult to use for desktop-style apps that some of us weep in frustration. Then, they put a zoomy big-button interface on it all and say that should fix things.
