The Archos looks an amazing device from the spec's, let just hope its hackable.

Re: Archos 9

While the Archos does look nice and I even like using Wndows 7 ( (of late over my Linux installs even) but I really want a Mobile OS for a mobile device.

Even though the screen is 7" but I don't want to pick on menus and sub-menus of a full blown OS on a smallish tablet. I would much prefer a mobile UI based OS =- rather like Maemo or maybe Ubuntu Mobile (which I haven't really used).

If I wanted to use full blown Ubuntu or Windows 7 I would much rather use a netbook like device - which is much cheaper.

Also using a Atom processor and powering a 80GB HDD and a full blown OS like that on a touchscreen means battery life will be dismal (like any netbook, touchpad etc). Isn't battery life a big component of why the Nokia IT's are such a "darling" to us....

I second Nilchak's advice.

A handheld device of this type should be instant-on (2 seconds maximum) and should not take more than 5 seconds to launch a big application. It should not have any mechanical part like a spinning hard drive or any fan, for handeling pleasure, noise and battery life.

In fact, such a device should just run Maemo, let's say it should be just a little bit more powerfull than our N8xx withe the same system and the big screen.

WOOHOO! Thanks for tipping me off to this! I either ignored it or completely missed it at CES and during the aftermath. I've gone and requested one for review, so we'll see what comes of this. I'm kinda stoked about this. :)

Did you ever get one of the Touchbooks for review?

Re: Archos 9

Rebski: Will do. Just requested yesterday, so I don't expect to hear from them any sooner than friday. Sometimes it takes me several weeks to get them to respond, so the review won't be immediate.

Johnkzin: Funny you should ask. I just touched base with them a couple days ago to see where they were at in the dev process and they said July for the proposed release date, so I don't expect to see a review unit anytime before then. But when it comes in I can let you guys know. Given the response and the number of people on the waiting list, it'll more likely be sometime around August. :)
