sorry to burst your bubble.

There is no good audio or any video for Desktop Linux. There almost never will be for N810. People commenting on this thread will make no difference. There are no "developers."

Fring might do it, Gizmo might do it, Pidgen might do it, but I highly doubt it. I think you can try with meebo, and that might work via their internal flash chat. But yeah, its not going to come.

Now, now... everyone knows that all you have to do to get a feature / app made is have enough people comment... it's the same principle that brought Tinkerbell back to life!

(you have to BELIEVE)

SIP & Jingle with the vanilla rtcomm work fine for me, modulo the crap quality of the built-in webcam and the fiddly way of activating for SIP calls on the N810.

I also appreciate good, valuable enhancement requests in https://bugs.maemo.org that include links to any yahoo specifications for this feature etc + voting for that report. That's a bit more reliable when it comes to get developers' attention. ;-)

After having my own bug relegated to "Fixed in Fremantle" status... bugs.maemo is very low on my list of getting things done.

In fact, the community has delivered darn near 80% of the stuff I use daily, and continued updating those things.

I've tried fring and it won't accept my log on name and password for yahoo messenger or skype. Makes it useless.
Doesn't the skype app we have for N810 already have video and voice chat?

No video, no. As I understand it, Skype's proprietary protocol was designed for desktop computers with reliable Internet connections. It doesn't accept delays in the video stream, and it doesn't gracefully drop the video stream if one occurs--it ends the whole call.

From what I've read, the processors in the tablets are powerful enough to handle Skype video calls, but only just. Should a background process activate or the user try to do anything else on the tablet, the call severed. In the end, Skype video wasn't reliable enough for Nokia and Skype to offer it.

Well I would love to see this but pidgin will not be able to do this on the desktop or N810. I do not think even the official yahoo linux port can do this either. Although, GYache can do this just fine: http://gyachi.sourceforge.net/

Quote:

Gyach was originally created as a yahoo only chat client. It was rather incomplete until someone came along and created Gyach Enhanced adding webcam support including broadcasting and viewing as well as voice chat for linux
Now if someone can make an arm port for it.

THanks

I would settle for Yahoo PERIOD. I don't care about video or voice, but I would like at least ONE of the messengers to work with Yahoo again!
And not the temporary fix, either.

ditto here. the webcam quality is poor but that is just the webcam hardware itself it seems. I have been doing video calls through my asterisk box with my n810 to a pc in office running counterpath bria since the n810 came out.

The problem with yahoo and other proprietary voice and video chat systems is the proliferation of so many different codecs. Even windows users have lots of problems with codec issues. Running n810 or linux or windows, I have no problem as long as I stick to h263 or h264 for videoconferencing.

in order to get your skype account working under fring, u need to have skype already installed on your device. about your yahoo account, you just have tou put your username without "@yahoo....".
i have been using fring for a while and i believed in it until the day I recieved a mail from somebody working with the developers team(he should be the head of the team), telling me that they don't want to provide us an API nor anything that we could use in order to develop it on our plate form.
on another hand I can see other plateforme users such a java,symbians,iphone,WM... enjoying theirself with all the stuffs that fring provides them on its website.
anyway, I think that people don't give us any importance, and in case there really are developers in this community, you are the only one able to make things happening...
because nobody care abt uss.
otherwise, I can notice a kind of flash on the top of my device's camera., I have never seen it fonctioning I don't even know weither it works. why?----> nobody cares
