Application Idea: Brightness based on ambiant light

Ok, got an idea while I was out at my dad's today that I think would be a good application. Since the n810 has a light sensor on it, why not have it setup so that it changes the screen brightness based on the available light. In other words, the darker the room, the lower the light, the brighter the room (or outdoors) the brighter the screen.

Also have it adjustable by the user for maximum and minimum range. So like if I prefer it at 25% in the dark, but only 75% in bright light, allow that to be set as the maximum and minimum brightness. If someone else prefers 1% and 99%, then they'll want different settings too.

Anyone else think this is a good idea? I know there's already an autolock feature that uses the sensor to automatically lock the tablet, and another to automatically kill the screen, so this could just be a slightly different application of those. Whatcha guys say?

I though this is exactly the reason the light sensor is there. It works that way to save batterylife, at least that's how it is on s60.

The N810 does this by default. But the levels are not configurable...

I've never actually seen it do it. That's why I asked.

Yeah, it does it.

The easiest way to check it is to cover the sensor with your thumb. After a few seconds, it will lower the brightness. That actually happens to a lot of people inadvertently :)

Hmm, ok. I'll have to look for that then.

Are you using Advanced Backlight? I don't think it supports the light meter.

Yes, the device is doing that already. If people are not noticing it (for the most parts), then it is doing its job properly: you shouldn't perceive the device is changing its display brightness.

I'd say it's the other way 'round :) At least for me, having the light meter enabled makes Advanced Backlight a little funky (if the screen goes to sleep, upon tapping it the light level will be that of the default, and not the AB one - I need to touch AB to restore it's level).

I see that too unless I set the default light meter to the minimum, at which point AB has complete control of the level.

Oh, that's interesting. I didn't know that setting the meter to minimum would do that. I'll have to check that out. :)

the light sensor on n810 is evil.
as a leftie my hand covers that corner of the screen extremely often leading to a regular change in the screen brightness.
i added a hardhack to rectify:

a little sticker covering the sensor (brought back from jacob after school)

In case you are not aware of another such idea that plays with the light sensor - here it is ... this app locks the N810 when you cover the Light sensor (like when you slide the N810 into its cover). Great app.
