Any other map suppliers?
Hi all
I recently installed Maemo Mapper because the built in maps do not cover the caribbean. I used open Street and found their map of Barbados to be accurate albeit lacking on labels. Are there any other map suppliers that can be installed on the default map program or maemo mapper that would cover caribbean islands. I am interested in using Google maps as that has plenty of labels, but I found on another thread that Google keeps changing the url so it does not work consistently. |
Re: Any other map suppliers?
By the way. My GPS works. Perfectly. Locks in about 1 minute and stays locked (at least as far as I've been). I get a minimum 5 satelittes.
I was quite surprised and pleased, to be quite honest when it first locked on a couple days ago. |
Re: Any other map suppliers?
I've switched to Google as they seem to have the best maps right now. For a while it was VEstreet.

Re: Any other map suppliers?
So how did you overcome the ever changing url issue. Or is it not an issue.

Re: Any other map suppliers?
Copy and paste the latest Google Maps URL in the Maemo Mapper Repositories thread into Maemo Mapper. I don't have my tablet with me, so I can't give a step-by-step here, but go to the Manage Repositories dialog and find Google Maps, then copy the URL from your tablet's browser into the URL field.
That should work. Google Satellite is the one that is pretty much broken at the moment. |
Re: Any other map suppliers?
How did you guys get it to work with the existing map file? I can't get it working without creating a new map file. Which means redownloading a whole lot of maps..

Re: Any other map suppliers?
dbec10, as Qole said, it's only Google Satellite that's broke, not Google street. It's apparently a lot cheaper for them to provide the street maps than the satellite maps, hence why they're doing all they can to block people from downloading them from anywhere other than directly on their website via google maps.

Re: Any other map suppliers?
I think http://www.cloudmade.com/ is a good map supplier. I saw many API compatible, but MM was not listed. I don't whether there is a possibility to take maps from its data base. Maybe somebody that knows further about it could help.

Re: Any other map suppliers?
I can't get it to work. I put in the google maps URL http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&tab=wl
I get a black background in maemo mapper. I choose manage maps. In there I choose area. It has my coordinates correct and so I click ok. It then ask whether it is ok to download xx number of maps. Which I agree to. Then it tells me that xx maps failed to download. The number varies and is not the same in both occurances. |
Re: Any other map suppliers?
Yes WIFI is on and I can see the access point LED flashing when it is supposed to be downloading the maps.

Re: Any other map suppliers?
I noticed that the URL is the same regardless of whether I click satelite or Street.
What is the URL I am supposed to be using or how do I find it. |

Most people don't like OSM because of the colors of the maps. by changing the style, they could customise as they want. |
