Glad you finally got it downloaded. But no unfortunately they seem to be binary files that make up the maps so unless navicore releases information on reading them....perhaps someone can prove me wrong.

Maemo Mapper can only read raster maps. The kind you have are vector. You'll have to use them through Navit if you want to use them.

I guess I was proven wrong. Thanks Lord Raiden, it's been awhile since I've used the default map program, I guess I forgot. I had nothing but problems getting Navit working, is it usable now? And although Navit uses vector mapping as opposed to the cooler but less usable raster mapping can you confirm that Navit can in fact open the graph.bin (and other files) ?

Navit is still classified as "alpha", so it's going to be flaky. But in time it will replace all the map programs on the maemo platform. So keep your eyes pealed, cause it's gonna be good when it gets done. :)

I find Maemo Mapper very useful and with the navigation features I need. It can use maps from a number of sources that are all free.

maemo mapper is very useful, but is there any way i could make the maps much smaller less than 1.8 gb for us maps?

that would help me a lot

i would also like to know how i should download maps for navit
i need the website to download maps and i would prefer them to be a small size ex: us is 1.8 gb. is there a website for navit that will do that?

I've not tried this but there are some parameters relating to zoom level in map download. I wonder if that can yield you a smaller map file size.

Re: can maemo mapper use usa east map data?

waypoint/navicore (default map application) uses the 700mb east + 700mb west coast us, etc. maps.

Maemo mapper does not use these (despite the misconceptions in many threads) - maemo mapper downloads tiles from sources such as openstreet, google maps, VE (best IMHO) and yahoo maps. Unfortunately google for instance has taken measures to prevent downloading a large amount of tiles at once (those python scripts floating around don't work anymore) and the databases are stored in /home/user/.maemo-mapper/ You can determine the size of the saved maps by the command $ du -sh .maemo-mapper/ (in the home ~ directory)

Also while maemo mapper doesn't do rerouting per-say I have found that if I take a detour and then return to the path it'll direct me once again. Also the way it does routing is that it connects to a website that generates the routing in the proper format which it looks up via google maps. Thus the need for an internet connection. It's unfortunate that there are so many licensing issues with maps.

1.8gb? I just recently did a build on the upper north west and it came to almost 8gb. If you're talking about the vector maps, that's a different story though. But still, 1.8gb isn't bad considering all that's packed into there.
