Few issues. Dare I buy new 770?
Beside the dead pixel (white) right in the middle of the screen and the anoying self- powering up I have 2 other issues with my 770. The problems are:
* The screen makes some kind of noice. Not loud but noticeable when it is really quiet. Very disturbing. It disapeares when I put the screen brightness to maximum. * When I use the earphones I hear a simillar sound as with the screen. And when I put the master volume to maximum then it disapeares! Anyone else have noticed anything like this? Is it general with the device? I am going to send it back but I really like it so I am thinking of buying a new one. Do I dare? /Thomas |
knock on wood, but my unit has been rock solid, no problems of any kind nor any of those that you mentioned. I use mine pretty much everyday.
|
I would seend it back for warranty or return it to the store you bought and get a new one if you got extended warranty...
But no need to buy a new one if you have warranty |
Mine too started making this same strange screen noise.
And before each beginning of a sound, when there hasn't been any sound played for a few milliseconds, there is an annoying noise : the same sound you hear on speakers when you power up a hifi. It's quite annoying when using headphones. The device case also started to crack a bit on one side. I just love my Nokia 770, but the hardware quality seems really poor. |
Thanks for the input.
I do get a refund not just a new one. I talked to Nokia Online-sales in Belgum (I live in Sweden) and it was like I wasn't the first one with the same problems. I had "Made in Germany" stamped on it. Maybe mine just came from a bad batch. How is to QC at Nokia? I didn't have it more than a week so not much time for customisations fortunately. |
Mine says Made in Estonia, and I have had none of the issues you mentioned. They do sound an awful lot like the issues I have been having with my MacBook Pro, though.
|
I have the same three problems. The device is also made in Germany.
Screen makes noise when not set at maximum brightness and I sometimes hear a sound like "feeeep" when using earphones (you never would notice that with the very poor speaker, my Sony-Ericsson K750i has a much better one). Then the case has a little crack, fortunately only the part glued at the bottom that is there to provide stability to the interfaces. I have mine for a month now, and I hope that doesn't give problems with Nokia if I claim these issues only now (I noticed the earphone sound fully only lately as I was testing mediastreamer and the crack is only 10 days old. They really sell a lot of defective hardware nowadays. You buy a Linksys ADSL gateway and get an unstable thing you have to reboot 5 times a day, you buy an IBook and you get a battery that may catch fire, you buy a HP notebook and it makes bzzz when it is in low power mode, the docking station for it makes also noises you can oly turn off by deactivating the usb ports on it ........ Gonna get a valium now. ;) |
The whole world is going to H*ll en a handbasket!

Mine is made in Estonia and I have none of the above issues. Do I see a pattern here?
|
As mentioned above, I have these three problems and curiously mine too was made in Germany... So I'm clearly seeing a pattern here !
Could we push Nokia to "call back" (is this a french only expression ?) its German-made devices if we find a lot of people having the same issues ? |
Mine is made in Germany too.
So far i had 3 broken displays and the "Crack of Doom". Right now i'm waiting for my replacement unit and i am praying that i get an estonian model. :D |
Estonia, no issues. You guys with the high pitched noise issue, are you young? Monitors and stuff used to do that when I'd bump up the sound but now that I'm in my late 20's (and have gone to waaaay too many loud punk shows) I can't hear high pitched noises like that. (When I was a kid I used to be able to tell if anyone had a TV on in the house because I could hear the high pitched noise of the CRT).
|
I am older than you :p , but the sound is audible very well in a silent environment (I noticed it immediately when I got the unit) and the headphone sound also isn't imagination (I noticed this one trying mediastreamer). Since I always used the highest brightness settings I forgot somehow that the display sound was there (see, I am really older ;) ), but the headphone sound now bothers me since I would like to use the 770 for streaming music sometimes and it would nice if I could watch videos on it without disturbing noises.
One question, still. If I wanted to claim warranty, whom shall I address? I bought my unit from online-sales@nokia.com (Belgium). Bye, tira. P.S. The noise the docking station of my laptop makes is almost not audible if there is some background noise, but its frequency is very high and it almost huts after a while. The frequency of the display sound is much lower, it is like a "buzzzzz". |
my estonian model has the crack of doom but I superglued it together. That was 6 months ago.
I use mine every day and have none of these other problems... DCarter |

Mine was made in Finland and no problems here.

Must have been all those generators...

Yea. Seem like many German made devices have all kind of problems. :(
tirabosco the way to go is to contact online-sales@nokia.com. I did call them first but they asked me to send a mail. Write your order number so they can find the order. And why didn't I get a finland made device  I live just 50 km from the finnish border..... |
My first one was an Estonian model, and it had the noise on lower than full brightness (this is actually quite a common problem with LCD backlights in my experience, in no way limited to the 770.) If the "crack of death" is the crack on the bottom between the ports then it also had this too. Had to send it back as the power button stopped working.
THREE MONTHS LATER (yes, three months, and after maybe 20-30 phone calls) I got a replacement, made in Germany this time and without any of these problems. |
Odin: Only if you mod it ;)
There were also articles about kids using high pitched ring tones that they could hear in class but their older teachers couldn't... and ideas to use it to keep "those kids" away from malls by blasting high pitched sound. |
Estonia. No hardware problems (just software, ahem, Nokia!). And it's been dropped twice, too! (Dropped, Nokia, not thrown -- even though OS 2005 tempted me greatly!!).
|
Estonia. Both Units. First one went through the white screen of death while being upgraded to 2006. The second one is also Estonian, and haven't had any problems yet.
|
I had two units. Both made in Germany. the first one I had a few days, but because it had a stuck pixel in the middle of the screen I swapped it.
I bought mine from Nokia in may 2006, both were the OS2005 Benelux editions (I live in the Netherlands). Both have the some of the same 'problems' you mentioned (I don't think of them as real big problems though): The screen makes noise When there isn't any sound for a second or two, there is ploping sound at the beginning of a new sound (very very slight, noticeable, but not very disturbing i.m.h.o) I did not experience the "screen noise over headphone issue" But if I plug in headphone and change the volume very rapidly, I hear clicking sound There are a lot of problems with the sound (cracking, clicking) when using applications. I think this is a software issue I had mine for 4 months now, and I didn't find the screen noise disturbing. Also I don't really mind a little ploppling sound when using application (Are you sure the Estonia 770 doesn't have this problem?) Also I don't think the sound quality is very good in any case. It is good enough for internet radio or VOIP, but I prefer an Ipod for MP3 playback. (Also a lot less noise over the output ) But the case is perfect no cracks I think the software is very buggy, but it remains very usefull. So I still love my Nokia 770 |
I got the nokia 770 the day before it came out! I loved it!
I was going to invest some time coding for it too which is hard because I do film production for a living. I was going to sell it because of some deal breakers: Lack of bluetooth headset support - How can i enjoy listening music when im tethed to a huge device I don't want to drop? Even worse - it has a bluetooth radio inside of it. VOIP took too long - and some ways it still isn't here NO Pim or integration with existing data structures except via the web (which is powerful) Poor or no microphone usage! Oh i could go on.. the power is there in this device - it's up to the developers to bring it out. I've decided to keep it and invest some time into the device. It's finding a better home using it for what it was intended for. A home internet tablet. I've been using it to control functions around the house. x-10, winamp, etc. I also will now use it to keep up on RSS feeds now that the RSS program has been updated. I guess it'll never be a PIM or the ultiamte travel device. (i just need the web and internet and voip when I travel - a laptop is overkill) Let's see with what comes up! I still love this device! I am going to spend some time to make an app or two and see what happens. |
