Anyone had this error:
>>
Stream failed to start. This usually means the item doesn't exist, VLC can't find it or VLC crashed<<

I get this when trying from the Laptop or the N900.

Did Knots say VLC started properly? Make sure VLC is detected in settings and it's the latest version. Also make sure the path doesn't contain non-ascii characters. These should all be documented in the wiki.

The path to VLC looks correct in settings but there is no listenting ip address in there. Does that need to be the ip of my laptop?

No, by default it listens to all interfaces. Try restarting the server just in case (close with ctrl-c) and check that it says VLC started properly. Also make sure your firewall isn't blocking access to ports 1978, 19780-19790 and 4212.

Ok I'm on Win 7. How exactly do I close it with ctrl-c?

How did you start the server then? If you installed the git version, you can open cmd, cd to knots folder and run ruby\bin\ruby.exe knots.rb to see the output. If you used the installer, there should be a script inside knots folder that runs it in terminal. Make sure you close the server first from the menu or use task manager to close ruby.exe and vlc.exe.

Ok, can you check with task manager if it's running? If so, it can be a firewall issue. VLC uses port 4212 as the control port so maybe Knots can't access that. Can you try "telnet localhost 4212" in cmd to see if telnet can connect to it.

Ok I have allowed VLC to run through Win 7 with all ports allowed but am still getting the same problem.

When I telnet from command prompt: telnet localhost 4212 the connection fails but am not sure if windows 7 allows that or not.

But is the VLC actually running when you try to telnet? You could go to settings, change log level to 1, save and then press ctrl-c to close the server. Then restart it. It should print out the command that is used to run VLC. Close server and run that command in cmd, but append "-vv" or "-vvv" to the end of command and check if VLC gives you any hints why it doesn't start.
