n810- Skype can no longer connect to server

As of yesterday I can no longer login to skype on my n810.
Its gives an error "unable to connect to server"..??
Has anyone else had this happen?
My password and login are definitely inputted correctly.
There's nothing wrong with my SKype account as I can still login to my account and make calls on My Ubuntu desktop rig and on my 2 skype phones..So something has happened with the n810.

Any ideas?

Works for me.
Have you made any changes to the router or the program? What did you do yesterday before skype stoped working?

no changes to the router..
What could I change in the program to stop it connecting skype?
I installed a few programs yesterday ..Canola,transmission and omweather...I've retraced my steps and removed them all...But still can't connect skype.I've even uninstalled skype and still no joy.

Are you sure you're entering the right password? Sometimes the typing starts with an uppercase character.

Are you by any chance using Privoxy?

In Skype, go to "tools", "settings" then "connection". On my N800 the "Incoming connection port" is 36855, and the "Use port 80" box is clicked. When I click the "Advanced" box, the proxy is set for Auto Detect. Do you have different connection settings?

Thanks Den..I have the same settings as you.

I briefly installed Gizmo5 a few days ago and couldnt get it to work.So I uninstalled it.
Do you think It could have disabled something?

I've been using skype on a tablet for 2 ½ years now and this is the first time I ever had a problem.

Just curious, when it was working fine, if you first login on your desktop and then use the same login on your N810 what happens, are you logged off the desktop?

I often have multiple instances of the same profile logged in on different devices at the same time and never experienced others being logged out by this.

May I assume that the router is yours and not one that you have no control over?

Den ,I've tried connecting at a few other wi fi spots that I normally make Skype calls at and the same thing occurs,so its definitely something on the n810 thats stopping me connecting.

I enter" username"...
then" password"...
tick "sign in when skype starts"

Click "sign in"

and get the above result.?

From the screenshot you can clearly see I am connected to the net...Plus I just posted this from my device.

I am guessing that when you uninstalled Skype, there were some files still left in a folder on your internal flash. After you uninstall, use emelfm2 and see if you still have files located at /usr/share/skype. Delete any files associated with Skype before re-installing it. Also, from where did you install you new Skype?

I installed skype from app manager..Is there a better version from elsewhere?

I realize there was probably residual files floating around but didnt know how to get to them from Maemo. Thanks for letting me know about emelfm2.

I'll give that a try now..

It is good that you installed from the "installable applications" using the Application Manager. One more thing, use terminal and type "sudo gainroot" then type emelfm2 so that you have permission to delete those files.

I get
"enable RD mode to gain root privileges" when I type "sudo gainroot"

Install "easyroot" with Application Manager" then in terminal just type "root" then "emelfm2. Happy to hear that you can run it in Fring.

Re: n810- Skype can no longer connect to server

Latest..

I logged in a root and deleted any skype files...Re-installed Skype....
And it still doesnt work!!Same error message.

Also Fring doesnt work when Skype is installed alongside it...So I Removed skype again and fring works !!

I'm thinking of flashing the device and starting over completely..

Sorry to hear that my suggestions did not solve your Skype problem. Do you at least have a fairly recent backup?

Hey Thanks for all your help Den.
I dont have a backup, but there again I only have this tablet a few weeks now (my first n800 got stolen) so theres nothing saved on it worth worrying about.

I also use Skype heavily, it's my main communications application. Let me know if the flashing does the trick.

Same here..My n810 is basically a mobile skype device.
I'll let you know what happens with the flash.

I would pay "big bucks" for a Skype application that supports video on my N800.

Den I just posted this in another thread a few mins ago. Head over to the skype forum and let them know you want this feature. Maybe if we make enough noise they will realize they have a golden opportunity with the nokia Tablets.

This does not appear to as simple as porting the Skype video code to ARMEL. Skype would likely need to re-engineer their video format and proprietary protocols in order to support the N800 and N810. See Eero Tamminen's post to Maemo Users:

Ok, I can understand how the present video format is too CPU intensive for my N800. But why would it not be posible for Skype to provide a scaled down "Lite" version that merely sends a "still" picture every few seconds so that we can at least view a very recent picture of whom we are talking to. Presently a "canned" picture that was configured in Skype is displayed.

That probably falls under rewriting their proprietary protocol.

It will be interesting to see what Skype features will be on the Nokia N97 later this year.
