Problems to sync Garnet VM
 

Hello guys. I have the N810 and been working with Garnet VM, using an application that requires me to sync the information once in a while. On the first time, I´ve installed hotsync on my machine, and it worked well, even the synchronization. Now, I´m trying to synchronize my N810 with another PC and I have installed hotsync on it, changed the IP address and I got nothing. Do I have to install something else on this other PC, like a communication port? I don´t do think I do, since I´m using a wireless connection, but...
I´m tied here. What do you guys suggest?

Oh, another information: I have just realized that the user name under setup - network on hotsync is grayed out. I wonder why...

Sorry no one seems to offer help on this.

I personally only sync to install software and nothing else.

I guess you should first make sure that you have all of the settings correct such as removing USB transfer under Applications in the Palm Desktop and going with only wireless support for Hotsyncing.

I use IP address of 192.168.1.8 on all of my Hotsyncs and I've never once had a problem.

It sounds like your issue is more complicated than what was stated above though.

Maybe read through some forums that discuss this type of problem.

yeah I know, it´s not being easy. I have tried several combinations of setups, read a lot of documentations and threads and nothing worked. TBH the thing which is concerning me more is the fact that the user name under setup - network is grayed out, which means that I can´t select it. So I presume that something is wrong, and I can´t see why. That´s grinding my gears... :/

There is NO username under HotSync on GVM. I assume you referring to "Hostname:"

If Hostname is grey out, you have problem in running GVM.
1) make sure you are using GVM for N810, not sure whether it make a difference
2) are you using the 5.2008.43-7, the latest?

Sorry bunanson, I wasn´t clear on that.

The username (profile name) is grey out on hotsync manager, in my PC. I can´t select it.

Maybe try to add a new user name for hotsyncing and see if that perhaps does something.

Is there any way you can transfer all of the original palm user files from your first PC to the second one?

Addison, I have tried to add a new user name before. Both gets grayed out :/

They have pretty much the same files - Palm Desktop and Hotsync manager. In my N810 I have a data collector software (a BD made with Smartlist To Go) and my client will need to upload this data from N810 to the desktop, and that´s why I need to have hotsync working. Since I have made this BD and all the test on my own desktop, it worked fine. Now, I need to have it working on his computer.
Yep, it´s being hard :/

What about just sending him your database instead?

Use something like Resco Explorer, find the database/files you have in your Smartlist to Go through Garnet VM, copy them, and email them to him or something.

On his side he would use Resco Explorer as well and drag them into his Garnet VM RAM.

It's not Hotsyncing, and if he has his own Smartlists, it would overwrite them, but it's something to consider as a temporary solution.

Would that work?

So you´re telling me that I can browse files inside Garnet VM using this Resco software? If it´s a yes, well, I think this might be a solution. I has also thinking on create an empty folder inside hotsync manager folders, with the profile name. That might be the reason that I can´t select it to hotsync. Let´s see...

Yeah, this should work.

You need SD card support though. If you don't have that already, it only takes about 10 seconds to set it up.

Go inside RAM, find your program, highlight all of the junk inside of it, copy, and then transfer (paste) that into your PALM/Launcher folder.

From there, email it to your buddy or whatever and have him do the opposite of what you just did.

Pretty simple, actually.

Ok people:

I have just discovered that you need to do the first sync using the old fashion way - through cable. If you don´t do that, hotsync will not create the sync.ini file inside the profile folder (C:\Program Files\palmOne\user) and you won´t be able to select it on the hotsync manager to do your sync (even hotsync manager warns you that if you don´t do the first sync, you will get problems).
To do the sync itself, I´m going to visit my client tomorrow and test it. I hope it works, because I really want to deliver it working fine.

Just a heads up.

If you mean cable as in USB, that won't work.

You can only hotsync by the use of WiFi.

Alright. My problem is solved now. and it was quite simple and makes a lot of sense.
When you synchronize Garnet VM for the first time, the software assumes an ID, so the device and hotsync manager will have the same ID. Which means that, if you try to synchronize your N810 with any other computer, it won´t let you, since the ID is not the same (and won´t tell you a damn thing about it).
With this information, I started to think about how to solve it.
In my case, I have synchronized the N810 with my PC for the first (I was testing and developing a DB for a client of mine). I have finished it, and now my client need to sync it on his computer, and as I stated before it haven´t worked.
Since I was not going to sync his N810 on my computer anymore, I did the simpliest thing ever: I have reinstalled Garnet VM and made the first sync with my client´s computer for the first time, so new ID´s were created. Voi-la! It worked. Whatta relief!
So, if your sync worked before with another computer and it´s not working anymore, just backup your Garnet VM and reinstall it. The end :)
