I couldn't have said it better than what Gerald had posted.
The main interest is in identifying what Apple had done 'right' to gain such a huge marketshare in such little time and how that is relevant to N900.

PS: Personally, I don't rank devices in universal term like A "is better than" B, because it's very subjective (different for every person) and it's even different for a person in different environment\condition (use cases).

@sachin: I'm so very sorry for harassing you :)

This is not an internet tablet its a maemo phone!
All it looks like at the moment is a little larger N97 with a different keyboard and maemo as the OS.

Funny, I was thinking along the same lines. Since it is a GSM product my ATT SIM ought to work out the box with this. But I'm concerned that this will be sold like phones and require either a very HUGE price up front or some sort of contract subsidy unlike the original models. The camera on the back is useful but depending on the actual cost, I too may simply purchase an 810 and then look to see what I'm going to replace this line with.

That is unless I'm impressed by something else.

Guys dont buy a n810 so soon... wait until the release atleast.... i suspect this thing is going to be sweet. I have been using the n810 since the last year and it is frustrating to use 2.5 year old hardware in this age...

Just hold on a little longer.

Electronic shovels are all I want! Give me a brace and a crowbar compatible with it and I'm in haven.

Compatibility, btw, is in the root of this debate. If it were easy to load all iPhone apps in other devices it would be easier to see that it's more about marketing and fashion then functionality. It's the same old strategy of tying certain softwares to certain hardwares... Open source still has a long way to go (I hope shorter with the help from Nokia and other nicer companies.)

Ah but then there are those much important aspects such as accelerometer, multi-touch... Who can live without being able to zoom an image by pinching it? Pinching is what it's all about baby. If you can't pinch it, it's 'tard'! And who wants to change the volume pushing buttons when you can put the device on a table and spin it like a spinning top??

That's interesting, we might get into some crazy unstable Lotka-Volterra predator-prey kind of thing! :D Who knows, we might get an Economics Nobel Prize by proving mathematically that iPhones are bad for the economy, and caused the current crisis!...

Why are people assuming that just because a device supports the wireless frequencies of a particular market or carrier that Nokia will limit themselves to only using that channel? They don't do that with most of their mobiles, why start with the N900/Maemo 5 if this is supposed to be a change-of-doing-business kind of device for Nokia?

Making conjecture based on what we know is one thing; assumptions based on what we don't is another. As a community that will soon get a whole lot more eyes from people who just read "the Internet as truth," this kind of thinking/speaking needs to be better curtailed by individuals.

No. I have just demonstrated to you the list of current devices N900 is going to compete against. The iPhone was not on that list. As to your perceived "pitfalls", I suggest you come up with some examples to support your point of view. Your examples preferably should not include iPhone, just to prevent you from more fanboyism. Thank you in advance.

It is because I would like to be able to place my existing content onto the device, as files, rather than use cumbersome proprietary iTunes application. It is because I have no interest in having to jailbreak my own device every time a new firmware update comes out. And guess what? I am not even one of those "open source advocates"! I just do not want Apple or Microsoft, or Google, or some other corporate entity to become a permanent part of my life. At least Nokia still has enough reason left to stay out.

How many years have you been with your cellphone provider?

This type of device will have to be on contract as the price of this thing sim free will be unbelievable. A sim free N97 costs £500 this has more than a N97 so it will cost more.

On the other hand nokia is phasing out the N810 so its very cheap (£160 on play.com). I may just wait until the price drops quite a bit then get the n900 when nokia starts phasing it out for the next internet tablet.
