(TEST RELEASE) Abiword for IT2006

Unfortunately, I left my Nokia charger at my other desk (other desk being a good hour+ drive away) so I haven't been able to test this outside of Scratchbox.

Should be able to open Word files, although I don't have any handy to test with (yay linux-only laptop!)

http://alexander.lash.googlepages.co...vs-1_armel.deb
http://alexander.lash.googlepages.co....0-1_armel.deb
http://alexander.lash.googlepages.co....7-1_armel.deb
http://alexander.lash.googlepages.co....1-1_armel.deb
http://alexander.lash.googlepages.co...vs-1_armel.deb

NOTE: I have NO idea what the actual dependencies are. Since I was able to compile, build, and run it in scratchbox it's reasonable to assume that you can find them in the various repositories.

I debated not posting this until I had time to test it, but I realized that certain very vocal forum members *cough* have been waiting long enough already =)

UPDATE: Must be installed with dpkg -i as root.

aleksandyr 2006-09-15 22:10

Side note: abidistfiles not included (templates, clipart, etc.)

dattani98 2006-09-15 22:24

dont know if i'm doing something wrong but i am getting an 'incompatible package' message when using the application manager to install

aleksandyr 2006-09-15 22:38

I'm not a big application manager fan.

As root, dpkg -i --- these do not have an icon and so forth, so you'll need to run abiword in xterm as well.

aleksandyr 2006-09-16 08:33

Finally got my charger.

sudo gainroot
dpkg -i *deb
exit
abiword

...victory! Quite a few bugs, but word import (kind of) works.

w_ou 2006-09-16 16:05

Great work!
However its execution speed is a bit slow.

klohmann 2006-09-16 16:28

THANKS, MAN!! I'm one of the whiners (!) I REALLY appreciate it! K.

Karel Jansens 2006-09-16 19:01

Great job! Thanks!

Just one question. I'm not that familiar with dpkg, so how do I uninstall (in the unlikely event, etc...)? Do I have to write down the names of all 5 files, or can I just go dpkg -P abiword?

aleksandyr 2006-09-16 20:41

This is a (reasonably) naive build from source. No attempt whatsoever was made at optimization, and I never quite got around to using OS2005 Abiword --- I don't know what to expect.

You'll have to dpkg -r each package individually. That said, future releases from me should upgrade without any trouble.

wwward 2006-09-17 00:33

Thanks for the efforts, Aleksandyr!

ascherjim 2006-09-22 05:24

Have downloaded and successfully (I think) installed on my 770 Aleksandyr's five abiword component applications, but (as predicted by him?) abiword doesn't yet run, ostensibly because its missing some critical dependencies. I don't have the skills (or courage) to attempt anything with Scratchbox. Do I just have to wait for further refinements from Aleksandyr (which I don't mind doing), or is there something reasonably more that I can do on my own?

aleksandyr 2006-09-22 15:09

Posting the error message you get will probably go a long way, yes ;)

ascherjim 2006-09-22 19:43

The error message I get when trying to run "abiword" from root is as follows:

"abiword: error while loading shared libraries: libglade-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"

What should I do?

aleksandyr 2006-09-22 22:50

UPDATE:
For those who are missing libglade dependency, please add the maemo repository entry to your application manager:

Web Address: http://repository.maemo.org
Distribution: mistral
Components: free non-free

From http://etrunko.blogspot.com/2006/07/...or-it2006.html

You'll need to 'apt-get install libglade' as root.

ascherjim 2006-09-23 01:17

While I am most appreciative of your efforts to fill in the blanks for me (and interested others) the two sites you give I find are not sufficiently straight-forward for me to successfully access and/or use The repository initially puts on the screen a one-line text title (and when fleshed out through an alternate search seems then to limit itself only for use within the scratchbox) and the other site's apparently relevant downloads are not able to be effectively installed on the 770, utilizing either the application manager or the the dpkg -i command. What am I doing wrong? Any further assistance will be greatly appreciated.

aleksandyr 2006-09-23 16:41

My apologies for not clarifying.

You will need to add the repository, as described in my post, to your repository list in application manager. Alternatively, you may manually edit sources.list yourself, but I would not recommend this.

Afterwards, gain root and execute 'apt-get install libglade' at which point you should be able to run abiword.

The line about only using it in scratchbox refers to the fact that adding it to a running i386 debian-based installation will cause Hildon libraries to be installed on a non-hildon PC. This would cause a few issues ;)

ascherjim 2006-09-23 22:42

Sorry to be so apparently dense, but I can't get past "square one." I cannot successfully load "http://repository.maemo.org" to my Application Manager Catalog. When I enter it and try to refresh, the result is a "unable to refresh list" message. Are you certain that "http://repository.maemo.org" is currently operational? Have you checked on it recently? Thanks again for your help on this. Also, when I try to run the apt-get command, it still indicates that libglade is missing.

BanditRider 2006-09-24 00:09

Try adding a / on the end.

ascherjim 2006-09-24 00:32

"Try adding a / on the end"....of what?

rcull 2006-09-24 06:52

I seem to have a similar problem. When running from xtrm I get :-

/home/user # abiword
abiword: error while loading shared libraries: libSM.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

/home/user # apt-get intall libSM
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
E: Couldn't find package libSM

I get the same response when substituting libglade. This has been tried both with and without a trailing / on :-
repoository.maemo.org
mistral
free non-free

any help would be appreciated.

repository.maemo.org is currently functional. No idea what to tell you other than to try 'apt-get update' on the command line as root, which gives a much more detailed error message in general.

LibSM is part of minimo and can be found in the minimo repository, details at:

At the end of the repository url like this:

http://repository.maemo.org/

ascherjim 2006-09-24 15:12

Perhaps I'm making some progress. Was able to get application catalog with maemo repository finally to refresh (I'd previously designated "user" rather than "free non-free"), but couldn't then figure out how to install it once it was apparently accepted in the catalog list. Also, did load and install minimo, but that didn't get me any further toward getting abiword to work. Error message still says it's missing libglade.

aleksandyr 2006-09-24 16:34

Application Manager doesn't show (most) libraries. You will need to manually 'apt-get install libglade' as root in xterm.

Honestly, given the extremly alpha quality of this build of abiword, you might want to wait.

ascherjim 2006-09-25 01:07

I reluctantly must agree with you. "apt-get install libglade" as root in xterm still comes up with the message "Couldn't find package libglade" after "reading package lists" and "building dependency tree." I'll be watching this forum for further progress being made in enabling the installation of abiword on the 770 to become more manageable (as least for me). Many thanks again for your time and ongoing efforts

BruceL 2006-09-28 06:00

When (the above version of) Abiword is running the keyboard won't pop up for me, rendering the program not-yet-useful. Is this everyone's experience or just mine?

You are right, the normal keyboard won't popup but you can activate the fullscreen keyboard with the whipkey if you have activated it in the nokia config.

Nightmare 2006-10-06 23:28

Is it normal that only images are viewable in word documents with this test release?
Or something went wrong during installation?
Maybe the open/save dialog just missing the filetype selection like in the old Gnumeric version?

daf 2006-10-07 00:34

i think it's just a font missing... Maybe you can change the font of all the document.

dcarter 2006-10-07 00:58

oh my- I want this so bad, but am hopelessly non-.deb shy
:(
thank you to all who are pushing the development of this pivotal app- along with the most excellent gnumeric build, this will add multitudes of functionality to our lovely N770's...

Hi,

why there is no reasonable ABIWORD 2006 download entry ?

http://maemo.org/maemowiki/Applicati...ac63e74c47f867

that would make much simpler - particularly for Nokia 770 beginners

and a short install description

thank you in advance :)

Because the .debs for this can't be installed via application manager, and AbiWord just isn't ready for prime time yet. I've got to figure out where to hook in the keyboard calls, and figure out what's going on with word import.

klohmann 2006-10-07 23:37

Yes, but even as is, it's great. I'm using it every day, and am forever grateful. It works great with a bluetooth keyboard. Thanks again! K.

ascherjim 2006-10-10 21:38

I've finally gotten abiword to appear and function on my Nokia 770, but only under rather curious (to me) circumstances. I access it from the x-terminal, but can do so only in the user ($) mode. I can't access it from root (#)! Also, even though there is an "abiword" shortcut designation under "extras," this doesn't work either. Anyway, I'm glad it is there, and in a form not too burdensome to access. I use my Freedom Bluetooth keyboard.

I have also the shortcut problem, i use x-term to start it.

I greatly appreciate the efforts being made. I use the 770 to read -- and there are probably far more readers than writers. So I speak for readers. I am not alone in needing the ability to read .DOC files. But I may never need the ability to edit these. I would put importing way ahead of input on the priority list. Thanks for all the work.

c1261015 2006-10-14 11:11

statwrangler, there is already a possibility to read .doc and .xls documents on N770 w/o Abiword or Gnumeric. All you have to do is to send doc- or xls-files as attachment to your gmail account. Then open the message in browser using gmail web client and simply click on HTML view of attachment. Both doc. and xls. files are displayed as formated text w/o pictures.

I hope that could be helpful at least for readers...

Yes, that or writely.com. Follow their instruction to bypass the browser detection, everything works except actually editing the document. But you can upload a word file and retrieve it in zipped html or pdf.

In my opinion writely.com does a better conversion job than gmail.

By the way, i tried a couple of hours ago to install abiword, but I wasn't able to get it run, i think i got something messed up with the shared libraries. I'll wait for the next package before trying again.

Thank you very much to everyone who is working on it anyway.

This may be so not what you want to view your .doc files like, but what about antiword? Its real purpose is conversion of .doc to plain text, though. However, it does a very bad job of writing formatted PS or PDF, too.

I don't know if there's an antiword package yet. If there isn't, I'll try to make one as soon as I get my 770. It compiles out of the box in scratchbox.

EDIT: Here's an antiword package: http://erinye.com/maemo/antiword_0.37-1_armel.deb
Run from xterm, invoke without arguments to get help. Basic usage is antiword -f some.doc.

danny 2006-10-17 14:21

Just getting into scratchbox...

For what it's worth, here's a makeshift Abiword binary based on the old IT2005 Word Processor: http://erinye.com/maemo/AbiTest. You'll have to copy it to any place you like, chmod 0755 it and run it through xterm.

http://erinye.com/maemo/AbiTest.png

It has a working onscreen keyboard (click anywhere in the document window to make it appear) and it imports .doc files with less question marks in them and more of the original content. (edit: This is something I changed. Did this ever work on IT2005?)

You have to run it from xterm and it doesn't survive task switching or minimizing. Don't do that or you'll have to kill it manually.

You need all of aleksandyr's debs installed as I didn't bother to package the libraries and other support files Abiword needs to run. I'm still amazed this even starts up on my 770.

Don't use this for any real work. I'm only fooling around with the dev kit. I don't actually know what I'm doing.
