3.5mm audio jack: Nokia = Apple?

Does the Nokia 3.5 mm audio 4-pole jack plug have the same connections as the Apple 3.5 mm audio 4-pole jack plug used on MacBook Pros.

I'm beginning to resent the number of headsets I own and have to drag around with me.

And please don't say "Bluetooth" - I have not had good experiences with that.

The Nokia jack is a standard jack. I don't know about the MacBook Pros. If you want to reduce the number of headsets and peripherals you use, then I recommend that you stay away from Apple products which historically tend to use proprietary ports and connectors.

Re: 3.5mm audio jack: Nokia = Apple?

I wouldn't call the Nokia jack a "standard".

The only companies I know who do 4-pole jacks are Nokia and Apple.

Both are compatible with the standard 3-pole jack.

Re: 3.5mm audio jack: Nokia = Apple?

The Nokia 4-pole jack is NOT wired the same as the Apple. If you use a Nokia headset with a MacBook (and I assume MBPro) the headset will sound muted and in mono, unless you press the button - then it reverts to normal. The same happens when using Apple (or iPod compatible) 4-pole headsets with the N810.

As far as I'm concerned, the Nokia uses accepted "standard" wiring, while the Apple is wired in a "proprietary" way.

By standard, I mean technical standard and not "commonly used".

The Nokia jack also works with Axim and some other audio devices. I have no idea about Apple's jacks (except that I prefer Cheerios).

I have a blackberry curve 8320 and nokia n800 an excellent combination for tethering. Both use 3.5 stereo voice jacks and are not compatible. Ordinary headphones will work in either.
The iphone compatible headset vmoda duo works fine with the blackberry but not with the n800.
I seem to experience difficulty with how each has wired the interrupt switch for call vs headphone. vmoda in n800 does not deliver stereo unless i press the switch on the microphone. n800 headset in the blackberry interfers with the music player by causing it to continuously pause.

Forgot to mention that the vmoda headset works fine with my dell laptop as a headset.

Thanks all. I now understand things.

Why can't the world be simpler?

Huh? I have a BB curve 8310 and N800 and I'm pretty sure I used the BB supplied earphones/mic in both and it works fine. I never tried the button though. I don't use it that often though... Maybe I'm hearing them through the headphones and they're hearing me though the mic on the N800...

You can use an iphone connector in the tablets if you don't push it all the way in. There's a thread where people discuss how to keep the connector from going all the way in. Hot glue? washer? Fun reading.

Really? I have the 8320, and I find that using the Nokia headphones or a standard 3-pole headphones (such as the FM transmitter in my car) with the Blackberry results in only the left channel playing. The Nokia, OTOH, plays just fine in both channels...In fact, I have started downloading all of my podcasts on it and use it as my defacto mp3/ogg player.

Re: 3.5mm audio jack: Nokia = Apple?

For the record, I bought a Pre-amp "designed for iPhones/ipods" and it, indeed, does'nt work w/ my N900.

Sorry to wake you up, old thread ;)

Specifically, the mic input is not sending anything to the N900. I tested it with Filmore, but I'd like to know of other means of recording directly from the mic "line" (ie NOT the built-in mic)

Does anybody know the real pin-out of the N900 audio "mono in/stereo out" 3.5 jack connector ? I'd like to re-wire this preamp thing, since it's pretty obvious I won't buy any apple product soon.

Can somebody point me to a technical resource about this ?

Wikipedia:

A 3.5 mm version of this plug is now commonly available on mobile telephones as well. A 3.5 mm stereo-plus-mic jack is available that is compatible with standard 3.5 mm stereo headphones, e.g. Nokia has been widely using TRRS connectors with 3.5 mm diameter since 2006. The selected pin assignment, with ground on the sleeve, is as well standardized in OMTP [8] and has been accepted as a national Chinese standard YDT 1885-2009.
The shematics for Nokia are availlable here (LC-0040, p9).
The ones for Apple here.

Apple is using the same connectors, but with inversed GND and MIC INPUT... just to screw up standards, possibly.
You can solder an adaptor in approx 30s, you need a male and a female 4pin jack, and just connect:
1 => 1
2 => 2
3 => 4
4 => 3

your adaptor will now work both ways (apple/others plugs on others/apple devices)

Re: 3.5mm audio jack: Nokia = Apple?

@Helmuth

That's very nice, thank you ;)

Now seriously, I'd like to look at the complete pinout, with audio in signals, to compare platforms HW. Especially the audio in part.

@ erendorn
Man, that's good news, thank you very much.
