I agree the maemo phones/tablets need a brand name.

I think maemo (especially with the proper pronunciation) is a terrible brand name (at least for the US).

I initially thought Blackberry was a stupid name, but it works. It provides a way to refer to the whole line.

"What's that in your pocket?"
"It's a Blackberry" is a lot better than "It's a 7100e from Research in Motion."

Especially if you want people to start relating to it as a unified, distinct sub-category of consumer device.
That will become even more important with releases of subsequent models. Once Nokia has established in the public perception what is unique about the N900, if it just follows it with an N910, the numbering doesn't clearly indicate that it's the N900's successor or that it shares the N900's OS; maybe it's like an N97, who knows? Nor can they readily be referred to as a distinct line.

I call my N800 "Nubbins" -- admittedly, a worse name than Blackberry. But it rolls off the tongue easier to say, "Honey, have you seen Nubbins?" than "Honey, have you seen my N800?".

If Nokia started calling them the Nubbins N900 and the Nubbins N900T and the Nubbins N910, etc., at least people would know that if it's a Nubbins, it's a cool device running Maemo OS.

It's just a matter of creating a better brand name than Nubbins (or Blackberry).

That's exactly what I am thinking too. They need a name. "N-Series" is not a good name (and now they have Symbian devices in N-series too, it gets so much confusing) and the numbers like N810, N900, XM5800 are simply hard to address them. Yes, it is a "Nokia" phone, but they need to make a distinction between a s40 cheap and dumb phone, a s60 symbian mid-tier phone and the NIT phones. All are "Nokia" but they are so different.

Many people want to have a name for "Maemo series" or the top of the line NIT+smartphones from Nokia, and creating a brand name it is a good business, Nokia, do you hear? :o

maPhone FTW!

This might be a good brand-name - short and clear what is referring to.

We settled on netpad, but Peter at Maemo didn't like it.

Can the word point a little bit to an crossover of a MID and a smartphone?

If we had just read his words a little more closely...

But even knowing what we know now, we still can't think of anything that makes everyone go "yeah!". Interesting.

"NetPad" was good for the NIT (internet tablet).

But as you mentioned:

and I agree with Peter @ Marketing...

The new device is a smartphone and a MID, so another name is needed for the "Maemo series" that became a smartphone...

They can create a new name like "ovi" - as long it is short it is easy to remember, and this can create a brand.

"XpressMusic" is too long and people do not refer to this long name... so "MaemoPhone" might be too long as well. What about "MaPhone" or a latin name (like "Omnia" is used by Samsung) "Fono" or how do they say "touch" in Latin or Finnish? ;)
