Re: Quake 3 on N900

Hi !
I'll have my N900 tomorow and I would like to install this game. Would it be possible to open a new thread like "N900 - How to install Quake" ? and give as a first post the way to install it step by step for the new N900 users ?
It would be very nice of you guys that know how to do this :)

Thanx a lot for your work, i'm reading everyday this forum, that is the best for me !

The auto-aim looks a bit jarring, but otherwise all very smooth.

Thanks for the memories, used to play a lot of dm on that map 13 years ago.

Playing OpenArena on my new N900.....Stone me thats impressive! Online play!!!! Jeez. Incredible. And pretty damn good frame rates too.

I'll need to turn off the accelerometer though I think, prefer just using the keyboard.

Re: Quake 3 on N900

I think that it is possible to train to use accelerometer. Not habitual, but possible.

is this auto-aim something that is implementable in all Q3 based games?

I ask, because if so, a whole host of Q3 based FPS games would become playable on the n900.

Warsow
Tremulous
Urban Terror
World of Padman

to name but a few, but they are all which FPS's designed for mouse and keyboard, and would all need an auto-aim function in order to be fun to play on the n900.

No. If they are using something q3 related, it's heavily modified and not open source

and they are not to my knowledge open-sourced, so they cannot simply be recompiled for the n900. as the ones i mention can.

Re: Quake 3 on N900

Am i the only one with issues on the accelerometer?
If i just start a game with device on plain the char spins left continuously, i have to tilt n900 by 45° right to have it stop spinning.
Is there any way to calibrate it? I cannot play with hw keyboard as italian layout differs a lot, we have up/down keys in 2nd fnc...
I know i may change sw keyboard layout but i would really like to play with accelerometer.
On the other hand Bounce is running fine, so i think this is a mess with openarena only.
Any help? :)
Tks.

Re: Quake 3 on N900

I can't get this to work.
Here's my efforts so far (i'm linux newbie)
installed rootsh to gain superuser priviledges
typed sudo gainroot in termina
installed using command dpkg -i
1st installed data package
2nd installed the app itself

and i ended up with error 'openarena depends on liggles1-sgx-img however it's not installed'

What am I doing wrong here?

Disconnect the device
Link the new baseq3 folder to your hidden one in your home directory:
Code:

ln -s /home/user/MyDocs/baseq3 /home/user/.q3a/baseq3

i also tried this (guess without root), did not receive an error in X Terminal, and I do have an quake3-arena icon in the menu, but the game is not starting...nothing more than a black screen...

(before this I installed ioquake3 from extra-devel repository)

i used a plain baseq3 (v.1.11) and modified the q3config.cfg to widescreen and 840*480...

should I use another point release of quake3 (like 1.32) or are there other steps needed to run the game on the N900?

I forgot to mention that I was talking about openarena from extras-devel.
The app starts but doesn't load.
Could it be that theres no opengl es1 libraries on retail version of n900?

here's a paste from terminal:
/home/user # dpkg -i /home/user/MyDocs/openarena_0.8.1-maemo1_armel.deb

Preparing to replace openarena 0.8.1-maemo1 (using .../openarena_0.8.1-maemo1_armel.deb) ...

Sorry for being so impatient, but I'm stil lost what to do with the missing libgles1-sgx-img that's preventing me from running open arena.
There doesn't seem to be any such library in extras-testing nor in extras-devel.
Dunno if the partcular library has been renamed in the retail version of n900 or if it's - 4 some uncomprehensive reason - removed.
Help anyone?

Did you install openarena through Application Manager. If not, please do so.

I would if I could, but I can't get extras-devel catalogue working in App Manager.
Someone already said that extras-devel is experiencing some indexing ( ) problems.
Is there a way to install it with app manager using a local file?

I did and it worked. Performance is an issue though. I'm getting somewhere around 15 fps...

Does the normal q III arena perform any better?

Re: Quake 3 on N900

do you have 42-11 firmware? it shold be faster than that, depends on map though. You could try to reboot too. Q3 is faster

Yep. That's the firmware revision.
Is the screen resolution fixed or does the device scale resolutions higher and lover than the native?
If so I probably should try to get my hands on the config file.

I tweaked the graphical settings and now i'm getting around 20 fps which is enough.

Another problem is the accelerometer movement. First of all - it's terribly positioned so that the player character stands still when you hold the device upright.

Second I'd actually want to try some other configurations like aiming with accelerometer and moving/shooting w keyboard.

Or just disable the darn thing and use just kb and touchscreen.
Oh and another question: can you somehow change the mouse from this joystick-kind-of-mode to linear mode so I could aim with it like I would aim with a normal mouse.

just got my *** handed to me by some easy bots :D

Use W, A, S, D buttons they should work by default. Atleast they do for me.

EDIT: As for the accelerometer, I dont know how to fix this. Does accelerometer games like enigma work correctly for you?

Install ioquake and openarena from extras-devel.

The repo had trouble earlier on, and was giving the libgles install error.

Tks.

I got this to occur the second time I played Open Arena. I thought it could be a bug with the autoaim.

mozr 2009-12-13 12:00

Re: Quake 3 on N900

You have to center the aim using the stylus on the touchscreen.

I had a problem with always looking up, and realised.

Then accelerometer works great!
