Community showcase in the Maemo Expo

1 Attachment(s)
There will be a Maemo Expo showcasing Maemo 5, the N900 etc. It will be a modest space in the Zuiveringshal East building, with high tables and several nokians demoing different experiences to Summit participants.

If you want we can have one of these tables for maemo.org and you can organize there whatever you will. You have the table, power cables and remember those maemo.org rollups from last year.

btw the lunch will be in the same building, with 240 seats. Everybody going for lunch will cross the Expo. With all these tables, it's quite probable that this will become the de-facto hacking space as well.

This is why this will be renamed as "Community" building.

Also, if you want to prepare a leaflet or similar we can make the prints, give them in the registration and have some more for you just in case some people want to take more.

An opportunity to explain maemo.org, the Maemo community and whatever else you prefer to all the Summit participants, media and Nokia employees from many corners of the company.

Now, what is Maemo Expo?

According to my google search this is the first time "Maemo Expo" is mentioned? :)

Re: Community showcase in the Maemo Expo

Sorry, the Maemo Expo was referenced as 'N900 Experience Area' previously in the schedule. Same concept, same demos of software and devices, only a more casual name.

Re: Community showcase in the Maemo Expo

I like the idea of some sort of leaflet to have available. It should outline what maemo.org is, what happens here, how a person can get involved, etc.

Please, let's start adding content to http://wiki.maemo.org/About_maemo.org . I can try to design something, but at least we'll be able to print out what is contained there (even if not "designed").

Thanks,
Tim

Do I take the lack of explicit answer as YES or as NO?

We are about to rent the tables and organize the space and we need to know.

To what question? "Should there be a table for maemo.org?" I would think default is YES.

Re: Community showcase in the Maemo Expo

Sure, but who is volunteering to manage it? There needs to be 1-2 people all time and it's reasonable to think by default that community guys prefer to go to the sessions.

The intense time is Monday 13-20h and Saturday 10-14h. Before and after is basically closed.

Yeah, I think most of us, prefer to attend the sessions :(

I will volunteer to man it during highly technical sessions that I won't understand. I'll review the list, compare it against the schedule and let you know.

Re: Community showcase in the Maemo Expo

This thread doesn't look like gathering enough energy to man the maemo.org table in the Expo. Let's drop it. There is enough to do and show for the community members willing to get involved.

quim,

mmm how about we do it anyway.

i will man the area for as long as possible on one condition - that the rest of the community do live blogging and reporting from each of the sessions I will miss.

I want to be in all of them anyway and would have to make sacrifices to choose which.
I want to know and read everything thats happening anyway so having an upto date overview would be cool :)

I don't know... The community will be gathering in that area anyway, so do we need a "formal" table? I like the idea, but Quim is right: no traction at all. And, no one has tried to help gather data for a leaflet either (myself included).

fair enough

Re: Community showcase in the Maemo Expo

I would do the leaflet, but I guess it depends on if there's consensus in favor of a table (as well as suggestions for content).

Right. That was my original statement here.

i would like somewhere we can focus our efforts on.
i actually missed the thread first time and only suggested it today as the start of an idea, but the more I think about it, the better it would be.

Texrat, go with a flier if you think one is needed, talk with tim about it and together we can man a dedicated table. doesn't need much active content other than the community spirit!

no doubt soon others will get involved :)

I was speaking to some of the guys behind the Nokia Nush N900 hacking challenge and think having a place for their information alongside would be good.

it gives the hackers a place to get together and discuss ummm hacks and other collaborations.

I'll try to gather the content within the next week.

Re: Community showcase in the Maemo Expo

The furniture has been rented already and there is no maemo.org table. If you look at the plan of the building in the first post you will see plenty of lunch tables that will be available for anything out of lunch times.

Leaflet... at this point I think the work could be better invested in a http://maemo.org/intro the core community members are happy about. Tim's wiki page is a good starting point.

If you have completed a great piece of text by October 5 and a leaflet design exists then it's rather trivial to do the prints and include it in the registration pack. If there is no leaflet by the time, then there is no harm done anyway.

texrat

lets sort out which unmissable sessions we each want to go into and find out if there are any gaps which need filling.
the schedule is full and no doubt you have some events you want to attend as do I
there are a number though where as I said, community reporting will be best anyway.

Re: Community showcase in the Maemo Expo

It would be good to have somewhere for the toys :)

I think it is worth having the concept around so that it can act as centre of attraction for this kind of activity...

That way you get people congregating rather than isolated clumps.

Re: Community showcase in the Maemo Expo

How about a big flag(or beamer) stating "All real hackers gadder here"?

I really enjoyed the cph very much, and I do fancy showing off hardware but think this is not a hacking week-end event is it?

Texrat 2009-09-23 19:21

Re: Community showcase in the Maemo Expo

Heck, keesj, who knows WHAT can happen??? :D

Re: Community showcase in the Maemo Expo

quim, you were right - its hard to drum up real support - we are all gonna be running around everywhere anyway and the maemo5 stuff will pull people into that zone anyway.

its something i really really want to do but i just looked over the schedule even more and without more definite yes's it would be really hard to keep away from specific talks.

we will hack at the already existing table if needbe anyway.

bah!
