Re: Personal GPRS Monitor for Fremantle

I'd really need just the combined grand total of in/out, my 'data plan' has 25 Mb/month total transfer, going over that costs extra...

Indeed. I only find this in regards to size:

Quote:

Widgets must be as compact in size as possible; even though Maemo 5 offers a generous amount of screen space, users must be able to place several widgets on each screen to minimize the need for excessive screen switching.
N.B. Due to the high pixel density of the physical screen, tappable elements must be at least 70x70 pixels in size for convenient finger use.
Quote:

Widgets must be designed to be as compact in their size as possible, avoiding any excessive graphical elements that do not provide any meaningful information or controls. As a rule of thumb, the footprint of a Widget must never exceed half of the Desktop space allocated for Widgets, including a 24px‐padding around the Widget (132,352 pixels total). The largest stock Widgets, Location and RSS, are close to the maximum footprint of Widgets, as seen in Figure 4; another, Tutorial, spans across the entire Desktop, but therefore remains limited in its height.
I do like the look of those mockups (?) however, while I still see a point in clarifying what data connection the monitor is displaying (gprs, not e.g. wifi).

Re: Personal GPRS Monitor for Fremantle

Oh, would it be possible to have options for what to show, or even different layouts? As this widget would only need to show information, even a very small number in the corner would be enough.

This would do just fine for me, total data transferred (GPRS in+out).
This is 100%
http://qkpic.com/bea0d and
http://qkpic.com/32938 <- that would very nicely follow the rules too. =)

Nothing fancy, just the facts.

Sure not every single widget should have same width, but for consistent look of the homescreen it would be nice to keep the width as simmilar as possible, built-in calendar, media player and maps already do it.

I like the minimal design without the header, but I think the icon there keeps it consistant with the other widgets.

Great with the icons (also on background looking well), and the small numbers. Although I'd start to calculate in GB if MB is a number with 3 zeros. The left space on the second picture could contain the public IP address.

Just a BUMP!

Anything new on the development on this one?

(curious since i think this is a great idea.)

Just working on this today, in fact. wazd has sent me his upload/download icons and I am hammering out the layout. I have finished adapting personal-ip-address, but I want to add a bit more functionality in that release before pushing to extras-devel.

Thanks for the interest!

Don't know if this was already proposed, but for me a cool feature will be a 'spent money' feature. This is really easy to do, you only need to allow the user to enter a rate and then (rate x traffic) should give the spent money. This is very useful if you aren't using a data plan.

Re: Personal GPRS Monitor for Fremantle

Version 0.5-1 with changed layout. Upload and download icon my wazd. Easier to read text. Smaller foot print. It is in extras-devel now, should move to extras-testing tonight.

Re: Personal GPRS Monitor for Fremantle

You could go completely overboard with this and make it so you can see a breakdown of data usage by application. No idea how you'd do that, but it'd be insanely useful.

Unfortunately, the data is not captured in such a way that I can display a breakdown by application. Something like that would have to implment its own data usage capturing, which is beyond the current scope of this application.

march: up 40MB down 5003MB total: 5043MB
april: up: 19MB down 238MB total 247 MB and so on

The problem is that by default a network filter isn't aware of application PID (process id, which leads to process name) because it doesn't have to, nor care.

In theory you can use ulogd2 for that (intro pt 1, intro pt 2) or if you don't mind sorting on protocol ntop will work. These provide a web interface though. Realtime monitoring sorting on protocol isn't hard either. Netstat even supports that. But thats not a widget, and it'd both complex and a seperate project.

Anyway, with ntop would become sth like attached screenshot.

Version 0.5-3 is now available. Hopefully this is the last version before it hits extras.

The user can now switch between "compact" (smallest footprint) layout and "non-compact" (larger footprint, title, icon) layout.

I have promoted the package to extras-testing. Please rate this program if you like it!

http://maemo.org/packages/package_in...gprs-mon/0.5-3

Screenshot shows compact layout upper-left, and non-compact layout upper-right

Re: Personal GPRS Monitor for Fremantle

Personal Bandwidth Monitor is now in extras!

Thanks to all the testers, bug reports, and feature requests. I will start working on the next version with some sort of reset (either through the interface, or bring up the control panel dialog) and I'll look into data logging.

There is also a feature request to add a "combined" view to show total up/down added together.

I'm experiencing something strange. The data monitor resets itself periodically (without me doing it manually). I have seen the monitor reset itself a few times now, but the date of last reset does not change from when I reset the counter manually. Anyone seeing something similar?

TIA

No, but since personal-gprs-mon just reads the values from GConf that could be a Maemo bug. Have you noticed how high the counters go before resetting, or any way to reproduce it? Do both receive & transmit counters reset at the same time?

Yes, I am pretty sure it is a Maemo bug, but I wanted to field the '300' here for their experience before filing a bug. I don't know how to reproduce it. Both tx and rx counters reset to zero, but the date stays the same. The highest I've seen the counters go is about 12MB or so.

This is a known issue at this point and Nokia has an internal bug filed about the issue which was closed. I am still having this same issue and it seems to be caused by getting the phone into a high load/unresponsive state. Stuff like trying to run ustream.tv or transmission seems to cause the numbers to be reset.

Glad to see it's not just me that saw this problem.

Is there any 3rd party application or built in application to show packet data counting?
I searched web and forum for it but i could not find any article about that :)

I think it's explained further up - but here it is again:
go to app list
open settings (that is the general settings for the N900 not a specific settings for data counter)
open phone
select datacounter
press "clear"

New version 0.6-3 in extras-devel

This version fixed the data counter problem introduced in PR1.2. There are now two data counters (home and roaming) that can be toggled between by pressing the applet. Or you can configure the applet to show the combined totals. It would be better if there was an indicator of which data counter you were currently veiwing - that will be an update for the next verison.

Re: Personal GPRS Monitor for Fremantle

just a helpful post as i found it hard to find how to and alot of others do 2 maybe a post on the first post wuold b nice

-------
to set the counter to auto reset at a particular date use alarmed with its inbuilt feature
-------

and is there any chance auto reset getting built into the app?

i have free youtube, facebook, twitter, myspace on my plan could it be possible to add a "free section" where u could set certain addresses or predefined titles in the program to be set to the free area so it isn't tallied up in the main counter?
eg.
Code:

title: facebook
links:
      http://facebook.com/*
      http://*.facebook.com/*
      https://facebook.ccom/*
      https://*.facebook.com/*

and the ability to change colour depending on your set limits eg green: is still lots left
yellow: getting close to limit
red: over limit

i have created a bugzilla post for this post please login and vote if u agree

I've made a german translation for this needy app.
But why it doesn't work on the phone.

I used 'PoEdit' with your de.po file included in the source,
translated it and moved thecreated 'personal-gprs-mon.mo' to
/home/usr/share/locale/de/LC_MESSAGES
but the widget still remains in english language.

Any hint to get it translated properly not using some hexediting?

Re: Personal GPRS Monitor for Fremantle

For some reason my widget keeps resetting when it gets to 4.25gigs of transfer. I am only at 8.68gig for the month according to counter in the Settings>Phone, but the widget only says 86MB after a second reset since the beginning of the month. Anyone know why it is resetting and how i can get it to stop?

To me that looks like a buffer overflow.
4 GB are a lot and it might be that the used variable is too small for that.

And here the question I have:
Is there a way to get a n alarm when I reach the limit of my data plan?
Lets say I have 250MB for free, and then it gets expensive.
It would be great to have a warning at 200 MB and an alarm at 240MB, of course it would have to be configurable.
I am not sure if it is possible with this widget, maybe it more should be a daemon which checks every minute. Or maybe it exists already but I could not find anything.

Re: Personal GPRS Monitor for Fremantle

For those requesting an alarm or some notification to alert you when you are near your limit:

Go to Settings> Phone> Network> Home Network Data
and tick "Enable Transfer Warning". Here you can enter the MB's that you want a warning to be displayed for.
