Information to Maemo Summit speakers

Hi, here you have the information relevant to Summit speakers: http://wiki.maemo.org/Maemo_Summit_2009/Speakers

Would it be possible for the content committee to send it out to all speakers? If it's not too complicated. Also, where can I upload a ppt? wiki and talk won't let me (which is ok, but).
  • You are encouraged to use the Maemo Summit 2009 template for presentations, available as odp and ppt.
  • The best format for the presentations is 16x9 since this is the proportion of the screens in use. Presentations with 3x4 format might get black strips on the sides or get slightly squeezed.
  • There are Windows laptops with Internet connection for speakers in the N900, N810 and N800 rooms. They are equipped with OpenOffice.org, MS Office, Adobe Acrobat and Firefox.
  • Bring your presentation to your session room in a USB stick around 9:30, 13:30 (Friday) or 14:30 (Saturday). Have copies in our laptop or online just in case.
  • You can use your own laptop if you really need to. At your own risk, we won't change the schedule if you have problems. Definitely not recommended for lightning sessions.
  • There will be N900 devices for speakers willing to demo their software. These devices can be connected to the projector with TV-Out.
  • The N810 room will have 2 independent projectors. You can use them to have e.g. slides and a device demo in parallel.

If you have more questions please ask.

Quim, what version of MS Office? I used Powerpoint 2007 for mine but can save to 2003 if necessary.

What about room 770? Will there be any projection and a prepared laptop?

There's a large white screen, but no projector.

It's just a joke. Please stop hitting me!

Nice presenter rules; though personally, I'd make everyone present from their tablet just for kicks.

Any reason why you guys aren't supporting the use of the S5 Presentation format as well. Besides being built with really simple tools (crack open Notepad to edit, a browser to show), you gain a boat-load of modular ability with it.

I've used S5 in my last two presentations (from an N95 and N97 connected to a projector at that); besides adding to the conversation, it does highlight the devices in a way that laptops+PPT just can't.

There's also Slideshare.

Re: Information to Maemo Summit speakers

We are supporting what the speakers generally require. we have got specific requests for speakers e.g. one screen for slides and another for demos and we are satisfying them. If a speaker comes with more reequests we will do our best, as usual.

I'm not sure about the projector in 770. It's really a small room for 20 people or so. 3 of the 4 walls are windows if I recall properly.

I'll ask as well about versions of software but I'd assume latest stable versions of everything.

Even 25 people in one room should have something more capable than crowding over small laptop screen in order to see something.

Again, let me confirm what we have. fwiw the own definition of BoF denotes a quite improvised and infrastructure. I have been to many BoFs and all I recall was flipcharts or whiteboards at most.

I f ytou are reunning a session in the 770 and you have specific requirements please let us know.

Still wondering what version of MS office is available. Also, I can't find the Maemo Summit template for powerpoint...

Re: Information to Maemo Summit speakers

I will ask for the MS version as soon as we hit Monday, since this detail is only known by the technicians in WesterGasFabriek.

I sent the ppt to the content committee + Niels before leaving the office just in case they had a way to upload it to maemo.org.

In the meantime you can download OpenOffice.org for Windows and probably solve all these technical potential problems at once. Even better if once you are done you export to PDF.

The wiki doesn't allow .ppt files :(

Randall, I sent you a e-mail with the file.

You could:
  • Zip it.
  • Import it into Google Docs,
  • Import it into OOo,
  • Export it as a PDF,
  • Upload it to SlideShare...

(Need I go on?)

People shouldn't have an issue getting their presentations to AMS.

Why not use the save as pdf option in MS Powerpoint 2007? Of course you need to download the addon from MS.

Or you could just use S5 and not have anything to transform into anything ;)

Isn't room 770 the small BOF room? BOFs are discussions, not presentations, and a white-board & paper are usual tools. Slides are not typical.

That was your call to move my talk proposal to a BoF. I have something to demo and something to show. And of course, much of it will be discussions but it does not deny the need to show what we are talking about.

I don't care about slides, anyway. I had enough fun in university teaching to students with a blackboard to not fear it. :)

Re: Information to Maemo Summit speakers

Turns out the 770 room has projector and a flat screen. This year with Anna-Marja the organization is delivering even beyond my (usually well informed) expectations.

About software versions in the laptops, yesterday they told us:

- Lovely Windows XP
- MS Office 2003 (Isn't this too old? I thought 2007 was the 'mainstream' version these days)
- Acrobat Reader 9
- IExplorer 8
- They will install today the latest stable versions of Firefox and OpenOffice.org. :)

Re: Information to Maemo Summit speakers

Thanks, this goes beyond expectations ;)
Acrobat Reader would be enough.

I'm not going to the summit, but as someone who has helped set up rooms for conferences/projecting, I would advise that if Office 2003 is installed, that they download the Office 2007 converters from Microsoft. That allows Office 2003 to open .pptx, .docx etc., in case anyone comes along with those file formats.
