Re: [Maemo 5] Instant Messaging (IM) Client? AIM, GTalk, ICQ, Jabber, MSN, Yahoo, etc.

Hi all,

I am looking to enable the extras rep so I can install the butterfly client to allow me to use msn within convos and contacts, I know its not meant to be for end users but im planning on using this and then disabling again.

However for me it does not seem to be allowing me to add it onto my device under application manager (I have followed the instructions here :http://wiki.maemo.org/Extras-testing) and its telling me it cant find it.

Any ideas ? let me know how im being thick please lol

I am having trouble getting logged on to msn using the plug in from developers catalogue. I was unable to connect for a few days and so decided to try deleting my account from the device and then adding it back. But when I added it back and select sign in nothing happens. I get the rotating circle when something is loading so it looks like it is signing in. But after a few seconds it goes back to the list of aaccounts and for msn it says not signed in.

Is there something I need to change. On advanced settings it says -

server: messenger.hotmail.com
port: )

Yahoo messanger on the other hand workd perfectly (and I have added all my msn contacts to yahoo messanger so I can continue to chat on the go).

Suggestion to all MSN users. Setup a jabber account and import all your msn contacts into it.

For some reason I couldn't setup the account directly on the N900. I downloaded Psi on my laptop and used that to create an account.

Your jabber account should match the first section of your windows live ID.

eg- adam@hotmail.com
Should create an account with username - adam@njs.netlab.cz
the password should match your windows live pass (i think)

Once you're all setup with an account in Psi go to the file menu and select Service Discovery. For the address I used njs.netlab.cz but there are many other addresses that should work fine as well (a quick google search should give you a list of working addresses).

Select the msn transport and enter your details. Psi should import all your msn contacts in the format <username>%hotmail.com@msn.netlab.cz

Now simply login with your Jabber ID and password on your N900 and you should be all set.

This seems to be the best way to use MSN for the moment. Figured this might help some of the users struggling with haze and butterfly plugin problems...

Hey geno thanks for this, it seems like a bit of a hassle but I am willing to give it a shot.

Before I do this however I was wondering what sort of battery life do you have if you leave this connected all the time?

I am using 2g gprs and was hoping to get through a full day with msn on light usage (10 minutes of phone calls, 15 minutes of web browsing, 15 minutes of IM chats...)
I've tried pidgin and haze, both of them seem to drain the battery startlingly fast, think this is better?

woody, At full charge in the morning 8am, with 3G on the whole time, connected to skype gtalk and jabber. About an hour of browsing and heavy IMing will drain the battery almost completely by about 5

I didnt try haze or pidgin for more than a few minutes each so I don't have a comparison on battery life

i have tried haze and pecan. They both show perfectly people being online but almost everyone complains about msgs bouncing and i barely get anyones messages.

I am sticking with pidgin for now. Can't wait for this to get properly updated or nokia to make an msn plug in

Hmm this sounds promising, will go through the hassle of going the jabber route for msn. I should get that battery life at least since I am only using 2G and all I need is msn, no skype, gtalk etc. necessary.

I was going to choose a server from here.
http://www.jabberes.org/servers/

Think these would be safe? As in those servers won't steal ur password etc. right?
I wish there was a way to block messages from ppl not on ur list, can't stand those spam msgs...

With 2G i get about 18 hours usage with msn connected all day.
With 3G with amazing connection (i work for a network provider which has a 3g tower on the roof) I get about 9 hours. Bit silly how much of a difference it makes.

Yeah that is why I prefer 2G, need my battery to get through most of the day, phone is of no use when it is dead lol. I bought an extra charger for work. I wonder if we can get a miracle with the firmware updates and somehow manage a full 24 hours connected.
I know it's been said a million times before but that's what I miss most about my E71 that thing could go for a long time always connected to my 2G with msn runnin etc.
