Go to page 21 of this thread and somewhere down the middle you will have your full instructions. Just remember after you download Haze or Butterfly, disable that repository you added so you don't download any other apps from it in the future by mistake.

Butterfly plug-in is if you only want MSN and Haze is if you want MSN, AIM, Groupwise, and all other chat clients. If you are only wanting MSN just go for the butterfly plug-in.

If you want a standalone application that looks exactly like MSN on a real computer, then download aMSN. It works pretty well also.

Re: [Maemo 5] Instant Messaging (IM) Client? AIM, GTalk, ICQ, Jabber, MSN, Yahoo, etc.

Quick question guys: I have Haze on my phone and loving it so far. When I sign into MSN, I used to be able to choose one of my statuses as busy which was a circle with the red bar in it. Now it's gone. I can only choose online (green circle) or offline. What happen to the busy button?

Re: [Maemo 5] Instant Messaging (IM) Client? AIM, GTalk, ICQ, Jabber, MSN, Yahoo, etc.

Was in there before? I've only ever had the Haze plugin and IIRC the only two options there are Online and Offline. I suppose it's most likely that way because Haze is still relatively unfinished, hence, why it's still in extras-dev.

Re: [Maemo 5] Instant Messaging (IM) Client? AIM, GTalk, ICQ, Jabber, MSN, Yahoo, etc.

Ya I also had a 3rd option which was "Busy" and now it's gone. As they are working on Haze and making changes to it, does it automatically update that version in my phone? Maybe they removed it and that's why it no longer appears. I thought I would have to manually download the update though if one became available.

That "Busy" was really helpful cos I could be online and see who was online as well but without anyone bothering me at work.

All of these late birds coming in, unwilling to resd the thread for answers, yet posting asking others for a solution, its just clogging the thread. Please just read the thread. Step by step.instructions are clearly given. On another note, it would save us all the trouble if the instructions were printed in bold in a post on page one as a guide by a moderater. The need for this to stem runaway threads is glaring.

your suggestion for a bolded post on the front page makes alot of sense. It may be annoying that people are coming in posting questions that have already been answered earlier but can you imagine how long it would take to read through 25 pages without even being absolutely sure your question has already been answered. seems much more reasonable to just ask.

most of the time I can't sign in but when I switch off the phone and then switch it back on again that usually gets it to work.

Msn

account plugin haze is not working.

anyone else having problems with this? sorta moot to have this phone if MSN wont work : /

jaem 2009-12-14 07:50

Re: Msn

Try telepathy-butterfly. Telepathy-haze is in extras-devel for a reason - that reason might just be that it doesn't work yet. If you install horribly unstable software, you shouldn't complain about it not working. I've been using telepathy-butterfly for about a month now, and aside from the odd little glitch (it's beta still), it's worked just fine

archzai 2009-12-14 07:50

Re: Msn

in more detail, it will log out my msn on my desktop, but it wont connect itself haha

jaem 2009-12-14 07:52

Re: Msn

Okay. To be clear, none of the Open Source MSN clients I have yet tried support multiple simultaneous logins, but telepathy-butterfly should at least work fine aside from that.

archzai 2009-12-14 07:52

Re: Msn

i meant telepathy butterfly

nono what i mean is............
there is SOME sort of connection to the server since it logs out my msn on my desktop, but the phone doestn actually sign in.

i know there isnt simultaneous login =)

jaem 2009-12-14 07:59

Re: Msn

Odd... it worksforme. Try manually logging out of all logged-in locations, and then logging in on your N900. Also, please use the "edit" button to correct errors in posts, so that people reading the thread later don't have to scroll halfway down to see the correction :)

jadejong 2009-12-14 12:27

Re: Msn

Can't you use pidgin or does this only work on OS2008?

Where can i find telepathy-butterfly? Is that in Maemo Extra's?

Thx!

It's still beta - that means not yet complete or possibly not stable. Maybe post a bug regarding this one so that the develop has it on his/her list of to do?

Re: [Maemo 5] Instant Messaging (IM) Client? AIM, GTalk, ICQ, Jabber, MSN, Yahoo, etc.

I donwloaded aMSN and it has waaaay too many bugs right now. For example: the scroll does not work, there is a huge lag between pressing and something happening, it stops the media player widget from working, you cannot turn off alerts when ppl come online, it slows the N900 to a crawl and causes malfunctions....it's kinda not worth downloading it.
Also...I don't understand the procedure for downloading telepathy haze/butterfly. I downloaded the extras-testing file, but then my phone asks what program to use to open it. I don't know what to use, and everything I tried didn't work. Can someone tell me what to do?

Disclaimer: This involves using Maemo Extras Dev. This can brick you n900. Follow at your own risk

You have to go to your Application Manager. If you haven't already, enable the Extras, Extras-testing, and Extras-devel repositories. I don't normally advise this, but I can't remember which repository it is in. Once you enable them, go to "ALL" and select the application titled "account-plugin-haze". This will add support for AIM, GaduGadu, Groupwise, ICQ, MSN, QQ, SameTime, and Yahoo.

Once you install this plugin, select the menu bar along the top and select "Application Catalogs". Next add the catalog Extras-devel.
1. Click the button "new"
2. Create catalog name "Maemo Development"
3. Web Address "http://repository.maemo.org/extras-devel/
4. Distribution "Fremantle"
5. Components "free non-free"
6. Close out of the menu

Next at the application manger menu select "download" and go on to install the "account-plugin-haze" plugin. Now before you do anything else return to Application Catalogs screen, select Select Extras-devel and disable them via the options and select "Maemo Development" and DISABLE the catalog by selecting the checkbox at the bottom. Now return to the home screen and Then, click the status bar where the clock and battery indicator are, and select "Availability".

Scroll to the bottom and press "Accounts", select the "New" button on the right, and enter your details. And that's it!

Again... This can brick you n900. Follow at your own risk

How do you enable Extras, Extras-testing and Extras-devel? I opened the Application Manager, all i see is Unintsall, Download, Update, and the only settings available are Application catalogues and Log.

Application Catalogues - New, then fill in the details in that post you quoted.

i used Pidgin. so far there's a FEW bugs but overall its very workable and I'm quite impressed with the program. Only suggestion would be to make the "x" to shut the chat windows a bit bigger (Pidgin tabs the chats into one window, and its a bit hard to click the "x" without using the stylus)

Re: [Maemo 5] Instant Messaging (IM) Client? AIM, GTalk, ICQ, Jabber, MSN, Yahoo, etc.

You should be able to change that in preferences archzai. I personally keep my Pidgin chat windows all seperate (this is unless the N900 version is different).

Re: [Maemo 5] Instant Messaging (IM) Client? AIM, GTalk, ICQ, Jabber, MSN, Yahoo, etc.

For those who don't want to install anything from testing/devel, I've just created a jabber account via the client "Psi" on my pc, and imported my msn account.

Now I just connect to the jabber account on the n900, and all my msn contacts are here. Soon, it will be possible to import facebook chat too.
