Maemo.org needs some space for us to host and share files.

yea that would be a good idea, nothing to fancy since that's not really needed.

added 2 new DL locations to my original post, they should work, atleast i hope they will :/

Re: N900 alternative boot video (maemo.org one)

What are the programs you use to create such nice videos ?
Is there a limit to the avi file or could it be for example 4 min ?

I checked it on my N900 and Yes, i have same problems. The Video looks like 4-5 Pictures that are not moving ...

Re: N900 alternative boot video (maemo.org one)

Then it must have been me that failed the encoding of it, tho i cant see how since it's a standard .avi file, hell it might even be raw don't really remember what i rendered it to in the middle of the night :P

since it's working fine on regular desktop's and laptop's it must be some codecfault from my side not working with codec already on the n900, ie as i stated earlier, i must have failed :P i'll try some new rendering and see it that help (oh how i wish i had my own device).

But just to make sure there's noone that have tried this and got iy to work first time on thier device?

OK changde the compression method from whatever i had to regular xvid avi so these SHOULD work^^ it's now a rar pack with 2 versions of the same video, one with and one without sound so you can chose for yourself, atm i like the one without sound the best^^

Download links:

MediaFire:

hello,

i've like the boot vid, and i want it to, but how can i do this:

Instructions:

1- Copy the video to /usr/share/hildon-welcome/media
2- Go to /etc/hildon-welcome.d/ and edit the default.conf file or create a similar one (the videos will play by the alphabetic order of the .conf files)

Hoe can i copy it to usr/share/hildon-welcome/media???

According to Karoliina:

"As a matter of fact the hildon-welcome is fully configurable.
You don't need to remove/replace the Nokia hands animation file to add your own animation or sound to the startup. Hildon-welcome supports unlimited number of "logo animations" (either video or image+sound) in sequence. It reads all configuration files in the hildon-welcome.d folder and interprets them in alphabetical order. "

Instructions:

1- Copy the video to /usr/share/hildon-welcome/media
2- Go to /etc/hildon-welcome.d/ and edit the default.conf file or create a similar one (the videos will play by the alphabetic order of the .conf files)

can someone pls explain how i find these files on my n900 ? i do not see a directory that contains the startup video.. do i have to install additional software to see it or something ?

I only tested the one with audio. First shrieking is a bit loud, maybe too high.

Paulhax, heres a quick rundown of what I just did to replace the video. You can do it one of two ways, but I prefer using the remote login via winscp method, so I'll explain that one (the other one requires copying files via xterm I believe, so we'll do this :) )

Make sure you're on a wireless network with a pc.
1. Go into the extras repositories and download rootsh as well as OpenSSH Server.
2. Open up xterm (it will ask you to enter a password here, remember it youll need it), type in the following two commands:
Code:

sudo rootsh
ifconfig

Look for the ip address of the n900 (usually a 192.168 number)
3. download winscp from the internet onto your computer
4. Host name: The IP address of the n900
user name: root
password: The password you put in xterm.

5. In winscp, look for the /usr/share/hildon-welcome/media folder.
6. Copy your video from your pc into that folder.
7. Once copied, switch to the /etc/hildon-welcome.d/ directory.
8. Edit the default.conf file to be the name of the video you added.

And you're done!

I know theres a few extra steps (you dont REALLY need to ssh into your n900 to do this), but like I said, for those not comfortable with xterm, its probably easier and more in friendly territory for now.

Please thank Elvind from a few pages previously in this thread. He was who I learned it from :)

Claesbas, you need help hosting them? I'd love to throw your dark maemo video on my device, but I can't seem to find a working link!

Thanks!

Re: N900 alternative boot video (maemo.org one)

Haha nice one, though that's pretty scary. I should find the parameters for the boot video (as in what's the size, and FPS allowed) and then put one on my N900. I have the perfect one.

Is there any requirements for duration? I'm thinking of making one out of V's speech near the end to Mr. Creedy, about how ideas are bulletproof.

@ claesbas...
Just got around to replacing the kinda corny Nokia 'Hands' with your flyby, which seems much more appropriate to the device. Simple 'cp' command to get it in the right place, quick edit with vim of the default.conf file and done. Very nice. Just wanted to say thanks.

Im a noob in making such things. Many Saw videos i tryed did not play full, they stopped streaming before the real avi file was finnished. I had problems at the end where "The game has ....." is. The vid was more then 10 sec., and it froze the last seconds. Audio was running till the end. I cut of so much, that im in that 10 sec. frame, and it went through.
I have no idea if it has something to do with 10 sec. , or if i did something wrong. The video was in 320x240. Bitrate for audio 192.

Re: N900 alternative boot video (maemo.org one)

claesbas: very nice work. Some awesome options there!

I notice that these are progressively longer, and i'm wondering how that affects the boot time. Does a longer video delay the bootup or is the system booting while playing the video?

Re: N900 alternative boot video (maemo.org one)

How can I copy the movie in the /usr/share/hildon-welcome/media?? If I try it the system tell my "access denied". I try it with the GPE File Manager.

Flandry 2010-01-07 00:03

Re: N900 alternative boot video (maemo.org one)

You have to have superuser/root privileges. Install rootsh and type "root" in the xterm first, and be aware that doing anything as root is dangerous.

Re: N900 alternative boot video (maemo.org one)

Thanks again, claesbas. I opted for the bright one on account of
  • It's smaller than the hands vid, so i actually save space by deleting that one
  • The sound is quieter/less obtrusive. On the off chance my phone crashes during a meeting, that could be important.
  • It is shorter than the flyby
  • It doesn't have "One heart." in it. :P

Edit: oh, and as the next poster points out, there's one "stutter" at the very end of the flyby that makes me think my video player is acting up, but it's actually a part of the render.

I do really like the wipe of the component icons in the flyby, though. It's the thing i wish i had in the bright vid.

Thank you flandry.. and good points. I will see if I can tweak them up abit soon.. lots of other stuff going on. But check back in a couple of days and see if I had the time.

One heart. .. mmm that does sound weird and cold.. maemo.org got thousands of hearts... Ill def change that.

Re: N900 alternative boot video (maemo.org one)

Thanks for all the info on doing this, i just have one question.
I downloaded the bright video, as well as the Grimar video, i placed them in the right location then i executed
Code:

leafpad /etc/hildon-welcome.d/default.conf
to open it up and edit it, i tried a few different configurations with the goal being to have all the videos in there to play in order, is that possible?

This is how i currently have it
Code:

[hildon-welcome]
filename=Maemo-bright.avi
filename=Maemo-grimar.avi

how should i change that to make them play one after the other?
