Re: N900 device program for maemo.org developers and contributors

IIs there any possibility that maemo.org/Quim could give a commitment that faulty N900 devices purchased through DDP would be replaced within the first year (assuming there is no obvious user abuse)?

We're probably - hopefully - talking about a small number of devices out of the 300 or so that might be purchased which then go on to develop a fault, but it would at least give peace of mind to purchasers who might otherwise not get involved any further with Maemo 5 or worse, purchase a competing device and leave the community entirely (as they won't be able to afford an N900)

It is just to cover the DOA devices.

Re: N900 device program for maemo.org developers and contributors

The only margin I have to play with are the developer devices for developer loans. The wiki page I have linked in this thread so many times. I can't promise anything but if I'm inviting you now to have your names there I can also invite you to have them later if you really need (again) a device for development.

Re: N900 device program for maemo.org developers and contributors

In point of fact, then, it seems to me that this program is just another way to sell N900s. With no warranty, it seems likely to me that Nokia will make a clear profit on these phones.

It had never occurred to me that Nokia would be up to this kind of dirty trick. I'm glad I kept an eye on this thread. I had no idea when I first got an email about this program that it was for a phone with virtually no warranty.

Re: N900 device program for maemo.org developers and contributors

Nokia making money by selling 200/300 units at 250€ ? That is BS. And yes, the lack of warranty is a very unwelcome downside to DDP, but at least it's clearly written on the site after you've registered and before you order... it's just not designed for people like us, is all.

Re: N900 device program for maemo.org developers and contributors

Quim -

Thanks again for the replies. I was about to purchase a 3rd party warranty from SquareTrade, but then I noticed that they require at least a 90 day manufacturer warranty. I'm still struggling to decide whether to cancel my DDP order and get in the back of the line at Amazon. I really wanted an N900 this year, so it's a tough choice.

I appreciate Nokia's effort to reach out to developers and community members - obviously you were under no obligation to do so. Still, it's a shame that the DDP has been so poorly handled that it's actually delaying Maemo development rather than accelerating it; consumers are buying their phones (and complaining about the limited app selection) while developers are incentivized to wait. Of course, a little waiting is only a minor annoyance compared to the slap in the face it will be for the unlucky devs who try to volunteer their time to enhance your product, and end up with a €250 brick instead.

I understand if it's too late to put warranty cards in the boxes, but it's not too late for you to fix this. You have a list of all those eligible for the DDP, and you could easily commit to replacing the small number of units which break within the first year. Even 90 days would be enough to assuage our fears. The small cost to Nokia would be easily outweighed by the goodwill you would inspire by correcting this problem.

Re: N900 device program for maemo.org developers and contributors

If your device comes with a defect from the factory that lets your device unusable, we will do our best to get you a replacement.

This is all we can promise since we clearly can't substitute Nokia Care services.

Please stop looking for conspiracies when there are none. The DDP price is probably around the break even point (before someone jumps in: the BoM is only part of the total cost of getting the device to developers' hands), and we are only talking about something like 150 units total. Even at full retail price that would hardly amount to a profit worth talking about for a company Nokia's size.

The warranty issue is just the way Forum Nokia works, we just never had to deal with them before so we never knew or cared.

It's still a nice gesture (no self-important sense of entitlement please), whether you take it or leave it is up to you.

So last thing missing is a date. I could go to a shop 8min from here and buy it now for €600. I'd get full warranty plus a decent German keyboard. If you don't ship this €250-offer today... what am I saying... right now, then you lose me as a customer and you'll have to deal with a loss of the € 350 price diff- oh, wait a minute. I got something wrong here. Doesn't work that way. ;)

I'll get back here when I can think of a more convincing threat. :D

The best date I can give you is "asap" :)

Thanks Quim (the Thanks! button didn't work)

If you need an N900 urgently go and get one urgently. :)

We can't guarantee you any date. The pre-sales devices were distributed among the active developers during the Fremantle pre-releases and the Summit participants. There is high demand for devices and the current priority is to satisfy it.

Could you at least provide a qualifier for "urgently" ?
Is it if I need it today ? This week ? Before Xmas ? Before next summer ?... :-)

Are all DDP devices being allocated yet? I did apply a bit late (about 4 weeks ago) and I haven't got email yet about accepting/denying my application. How long should it take to get a response?

qgil 2009-11-25 16:46

Re: N900 device program for maemo.org developers and contributors

Every single time I have mentioned a possible date in this forum I regretted afterward...

I was answering to benny. if someone has an immediate urgency and you have a way to get the N900 immediately, then the answer is clear.

OK... I recall something that once you have been approved you can see the N900 available at forum.nokia.com after logging in... So far I do not see it. :(

Your best bet is to write an email to DDP direct and ask for confirmation of your application.

Mara, did you log in, go to the store, then refresh the store? Some people have reported that they needed to refresh the eStore to see the phone magically appear.

Nope... I do not see it there. (Even after refreshing the page, and trying to log in second time.) I assume you do mean store.ovi com, or is there still another eStore somewhere?

That's where I was first looking. Then I tried to check the ovi store.

At forum.nokia, the store is the "Devices" tab? Or am I missing something? I do see the N900 as a device choice among others, but there is no way I can place an order for it.

Well, considering all the other restrictions of the DDP program I'm not terribly disappointed if I didn't qualify...

Click the premium button and under that you should see e-store. But did you get an email from ddp saying that the n900 has been added to your estore? WIthout that email i dont think it will be there. And you get that email after you are approved.

Hope this helps.

qole 2009-11-25 21:04

Re: N900 device program for maemo.org developers and contributors

I didn't get any e-mails from the DDP. The phone just appeared in my eStore. The eStore should appear as a tab in Forum Nokia once you become a Pro member. I went there and it only has an unrelated phone and some support options. Upon hitting the refresh button in my browser, the N900 mysteriously appeared.

EDIT: The eStore is found under the "Premium Services" tab. It is the last of the gray links under the tabs when you go there.

Thanks, It does help. Could it have made any more difficult to find?

Unfortunately the N900 is not there... :( Obviously my application is not yet approved, or they did run out of the devices they have allocated for DDP.

Oh man. With a "customs value" like that, it is going to have a crushing amount of taxes and stuff attached to it here in Canada... Why not 250 EUR?! :(

That device was a loaner and it is not the same program. It was from nokia word of mouth. I hope we dont need to pay taxes and also we can use the rebate....

Who is that guy? Does anyone know him?

Would it have been quicker to claim I'm a well read blogger, analyst, dental floss tycoon, whatever, bombard sites with posts proving my passion for all things Maemo, and then gone with this word of mouth, Blogger Relations Program?

That would suck on so many levels (but help me understand a few things about motivation ;) )... I've maintained a mobile blog since December 2005. I only use it to support my forum posts and it's not a commercial endeavor but hell, my first Maemo post was 6 months before this guy even started with S60 posts.

Dang. If I new it meant something I would have spruced it up a bit. A least swept the dust under the rug and got rid of the beer cans and pizza boxes. Maybe offered Karelian pies to visitors and whatnot. :D

He gets points for adding "and Maemo news" to the sub-title bar though. :p
