Thank you and apology for the delay.
Thats what I got from DDP - this time without asking them.

Tired of waiting??

It depends how much their time costs for themselves... If people don't like waiting, they could have reserved it on Nokia on-line Shop, just pay the 599 EUR and they would receive it soon (and with 2 year warranty).

If they are developers, they still have the SDK to test and create apps, so they could wait a bit for it, couldn't they?

Of course, some couldn't be developers, but just bloggers, and how many of them have expected a DDP from Nokia??? And, please, life is not always fair, don't compare among users just to see if you should be first in the list to receive a N900... Have you expected it? No, so, let's have fun, when it arrives ;)

My firsts complaints weren't about release time (even when I would like having the N900 at home ASAP), but about not receiving any answer from Nokia. And that's a bad sign if you expect to have some "fan community"... But things seem to be changing ;)

I got a similar mail this morning also. I guess they are going back through the list of people who enquired at least once since they ordered and sending this as a PR equivalent of "keepalive" or "ping" :-)

At least it's nice of them to do that, especially as the mails seem personalized and hand-written.

Maybe they're waiting for models that have working microphones. Which would make it worth the extra time. :)

Re: N900 device program for maemo.org developers and contributors

Another working week is over.
No mail from anybody.
I have nothing intelligent to say.
Maybe I should only shut up.

Apart from this...

As the pessimistic person in me is always saying, they're waiting for people with defective devices to return them, then they're going to "repair" them, and send those to us. ;)

Yeah, because these are developer devices and not intended for regular phone use, they don't need working microphones. ;)

There went my idea for 'smart application to take input from the mic' application! ;)

Maybe they can't send the DDP N900s out until the Pandora ships. :( ;)

Re: N900 device program for maemo.org developers and contributors

the more the wait, the better device you might get :p

I *think* they'll ship when they'll have them in stock :) :p
Or well, they might have them in stock already and are playing with them, just for the fun of it.. who knows...

fpp 2009-11-27 21:29

Re: N900 device program for maemo.org developers and contributors

One thing that worries me is that the order was not charged against the credit card. That's both good and bad, because as we creep towards Christmas, expenses on that card are also piling up.

It would be just my luck that they decide to ship and charge the card on just the day where it exceeds the monthly cap...

There are X people working for the DDP. These X people need to ship Y devices to members of the community. In order to test the microphones before shipping, each device has to actively call another device and receive a call from one of the other devices.

One test call takes 10 seconds.

a) Express the time (in hours) until delivery starts as a function of X and Y
b) Calculate the phone bill

fpp 2009-11-27 22:47

Re: N900 device program for maemo.org developers and contributors

c) Z percent of the Y devices turn out faulty. Verifying that and processing paperwork to secure a new one takes one hour per device.

Estimate the payoff to the DDP team if they just ship what's in the crates and be done with it :-)

What really blows is I'm entitled to the DDP discount but thanks to fallout from the economic crisis I can't take advantage of mine. Ah well. There's always Maemo 6... :o

Exactly... and for the record I'm not tired of waiting. :)

I was just looking for something to comment on in order to keep this thread up.

Someone recently joked about developing a new app for the Mic issue. For real dude!

Might I suggest a complete diagnostic app. One that generates patterns on the display to identify issues, waits for screen input and reports success, checks the cameras, checks the accelerometer, checks the phone portrait display, dialing buttons, hardware buttons, generates speaker tones, and performs a microphone loop back test.

Ideally this should be done prior to full boot but that might not be possible. Other phones have diagnostics routines embedded that you fire up by holding a series of keys at power-up.

Before the anal army tells me that this is not the topic of the thread or gives me the SMOMR to "Feel free to...". again I know that.
I'm just killin' time by posting in the only relevant thread available to me now on these boards.
The fact is, until some of us have a phone in hand, we are just part of the background noise here.
For almost 3 years I've gotten used to reading posts from some of you guys. :)

... others, meh. :D

Cool idea. We could ask Nokia if they want to use this kind of quality test where the units are assembled. It seems they're currently lacking this type of application and voted for "Solution#2: The community should do it" :p

No, just mournful lyrics to a sad, sad melody... :(

But since you mentioned it:

The days grow cold, dark.
Peter said shipping started.
But still the devs wait.

Those who did nothing got n900 for free.
Meanwhile community can only buy it for a fee,
Suffering from endless shippment delays.
Lets all say hello to maemo "developer" days.

Finally I got it... :) It seem that even when I had logged in before entering to the eStore, I had to relogin one more time and then it showed up.

Now the only question is that when I do order will I need to pay duty on the item once it arrives to US? As far as I understand the duty free limit is $400 for items mailed to US... but if they put that 400GBP customs value into the shipment papers then I'd expect some nasty surprice...

By the way, in my order placement screen it says usually ships in 3 business days... Anyone who ordered it earlier did it say the same?

You miss the requirement "have the device in stock AT Forum Nokia".

Is it odd like Nokia loses all our financial data to a hacker. Or odd as in we get our n900's shipped with all their pixels and mics that work? ;)

We are really sorry, we are trying our best.

Today's reply to my (maybe not so polite) mail.

I have to admit that I stopped caring will it be next week or month.

Until Qt4 Maemo5 packages get Phonon::SeekSlider fixed my app will not be so usable as it is on desktop anyway. And I need to change UI.

Seriously. What are you looking to accomplish here?

Sorry for not responding to your comment. I didn't see it till just now.

I am trying to express my reaction when I suddenly find that this supposed good deal turns out to be a bad deal.

Buying a phone/tablet that will turn into an expensive paperweight if a defect becomes apparent after you have it for more than a week? It sounds like a very good deal for Nokia and a very bad deal for any consumer.

I was naively pleased when I received this offer, because I thought that Nokia was actually making the N900 more affordable
for some of us. I changed my plans and decided to buy an N900. I assumed there would be a decent warranty, of course.

Then to find out that there is not a decent warranty was very disillusioning. I of course changed my plans.

Where exactly did you hear there was only one week warranty? That makes zero sense.
