Yeah it is :p

More like a lack of commitment to US service providers...

As I was putting together my planned post I went to "My-Tmoble" web site and registered to look at my plan and to get more particulars...
Good thing I did. I found that the "200 anytime minutes" the dude who sold me claimed I had turned out to be 200 MB.
In one day I had used 22.

I called up customer service to find WTF? After hearing "sounds like you want to add my favorites to your plan" for the third time after I clearly said "speak to a representative" I yelled an obscenity and was immediately connected to a live agent.

She of course apologized for the confusion and said that the 5gig plan would cost me $49 a month instead of $29 but she would be happy to change it for me. I asked if the dude who sold me this thing would now get a spiff or commission on the $49 plan and she said yes. I said "I now see where he got his motivation". She said she would put notes on this account so his manager can give him additional "coaching".

I asked if I am still able to walk away from this plan at anytime without an ETF and she said sure.
I went back to the T-mobile site to see what plan she put me on and found it to be the Monthly WC Promo 5GB.
This gives you only data and will not allow you to call out. Calls to the phone get a recording saying "The customer does not wish to receive calls on this line" or somesuch. This is fine with me because I have to carry a non-gsm company phone anyway.

In any event there is some writing somewhere on the website that states "Promotional plans require a contract extension." If this a promotional plan than the second agent I spoke with on the phone, slammed me with a contract.

I'll find an e-mail addy to a real person somewhere and unless they can give me something in writing, I'm walking out within the "buyers remorse" period.

That crap^ is why the US market is so hard to crack and why there are so many negative threads out there that hold Nokia in some sort of suspicion or even contempt. It is not Nokia specific. Rather, it is a contempt for all manufacturers of phones sold to US consumers because in the past they were only available through service providors... everyone knows that game is rigged.

So has anyone else heard of a bit of dirt on the display, but under the touchscreen?

I hadn't, until today.

I got one of those duds too.. there are no issues and everything works. The only thing I haven't tested yet is the FM transmitter. Mine must be seriously broken because it doesn't even need to be charged particularly often! :)

Now I need to find out how I can tap into the N900's connection via BT from my N810 so I can keep that in the car, semi-permanent like.
Yep, something similar here. I must use my N900 as BT modem for my N800 (because that's where I'll have to do my e-mailing until critical issues are sorted out on Maemo 5), or, alternatively, I could swap the SIM in my N900 with one from another phone and connect from the N900 to the other phone (and I could then also connect from my N800 to that same phone).

None of this seems to currently be possible out of the box.

I thought BT PAN was easy enough ?

Re: N900 device program for maemo.org developers and contributors

BT PAN maybe - but I'm after DUN. Which may be easy too, the issue is only that it's not there (afaik) out of the box.

Well after using my loaner for about 3 month now (as primary device) I have a _lot_ of dust inside the display. So don't worry about a bit of dirt, it will soon get company :/

Hopefully the Koreans doing a better job at assembling than the Finns :)

I noticed that there's now a BT DUN server script in the repositories.

That was a frequent problem in the factories I worked in and with. If you don't have appropriate ESD and handling measures, dust LOVES to cling to glass. Heck, N80s made in Reynosa looked like ant farms...

I got an offer. But as noted earlier, we're still recovering from my earlier job loss. Can't even fit a discounted device into the budget. I'm hoping some ebay auctions I'm about to start can fix that.

Well, DHL dropped it off this morning. No hardware issues although the screen is noticeably more yellow than my prototype. Starting a collection of AC-10Es here. Need to go buy another adaptor. . . .

Just returned from Arizona......................just kidding, and fired up skype, it worked on 1st trial. I talked to a friend and used it like a cellphone, and it worked. However, the mic icon is crossed out with a red line. Do I have mic problems?

The phone vibrates

no dead pixel

What else should i check?

How do you get the gps lock?

Here are some pics from the N900.... enjoy

TIA,

I noticed too, so I have it installed - but I haven't managed to get this working yet.

In the meantime I ran into a battery issue - mentioned elsewhere. The pulseaudio EQ is running even though there's nothing requring it (nothing which plays anything.) Investigations are ongoing.

Err, are you referring to the mute button ?

Probably - the current implementation of that button seems a little counter-intuitive. Wouldn't it be better if the button represented the current state of the mic, ie. no-cross out when the mic is active but crossed out when the mic is muted, and not the other way around which is how it is now?

This would be consistent with the volume mute icon (the button for which doesn't currently work) - when the volume is at zero the speaker is crossed out (ie. it's currently inactive) but when the volume is > zero the speaker has no cross out. The phone app runs counter to this approach.

I got mine too yesterday and so far I have not seen any hardware or software issues. This looks like a keeper... :)

Also, I don't seem to have the "flash reflecting from the bezel back to picture" issue either... or at least if there is, it is hard to notice... :)

I open the kick stand and tried, too bad, only one side of the stand is attached, the other side is easily detach. I thought it was broken. I simply put it back, but ... flimsy :(

I dont mind to be shipped to Finland, I have never been there :)

Back to N900, so far my N900 is working fine, with all the horrible 'stories' going on, I rather stick with this one, even if the kick stand retire.

Try the WorldTV99 yet? What a big difference from N8x0!

On a usability note: I found a suitable car mount at Bestbuy for 20 bucks. It works fine but I'll post a new review thread once I've used it for a couple of days. It is very adjustable and can get out of the way of cables and buttons easily.

>> HERE <<

After installing it with the N900 set to transmit sound through my cars FM I found myself doing something I hadn't done in 15 or 20 years....
Wifey came out to ask if something was wrong. I was just sitting in the car parked in the driveway listening to music on its stereo. :p

I'm liking this N900 a lot. http://smileys.on-my-web.com/reposit...rinking-48.GIF

No, Nokia pays. But if you have to send DDP device back to them better ask for their DHL client ID in first mail - otherwise they will send you prefilled AWB for DHL by normal post -- which is silly cause all you need is client ID to order courier which will be paid by Nokia.

"My" DDP n900 is already shipped to the Helsinki contact and waiting for someone to give it to the beautiful part of our OMW Team, Olga :) Any Santas in the area?)

Yes, I should have followed up on my first post with the rest of the story so far. When I made a fuss about sending it back on my own, she was going to send me the prefilled AWB by post, but I just kept insisting on the number, and she finally made an exception for me ("we don't normally do this") and gave me the client ID number...

I suppose DHL doesn't deliver on Sat at least in Italy :)
Oh well, I'll be back in Italy tomorrow.. I'll make sure I'll test everything on the new shiny N900.

Re: N900 device program for maemo.org developers and contributors

So after being delayed by the snow, the package finally made it to my house.
I've just received the N900 and I still have to check everything is fine..

But, it has been opened already.
The N900 box was not sealed as when you buy a new one, the camera cover was slide open and there was dust on the screen and there was no screen protector (the black one you have to peel off) on the screen itself.

Not sure why, I'll ask DDP if they "tested" the phone before sending it.

Anyone had the same experience?

tvogel 2009-12-22 14:00

Re: N900 device program for maemo.org developers and contributors

The first one I got, had a seal on the "posti" package around the N900 package. This one also looked completely untouched. No dust anywhere, screen protection film very firm on the screen. I had to send that one back because the vibration alert broke during the first day. The replacement looked touched: no seal on the "posti" package, screen protection film present, but quite loose, some dust under protector, fingerprint on camera lens, battery cover not completely closed. (Don't want to complain, just facts.)

Tilman

PS. Hint: In order to remove dust from screen and sticky protector, adhesive tape works very well as dust catcher.

@Anidel: when it came it was virgin. Yours smells like refurbished, maybe.

Don't think it's a refurbished one.
Definitely someone opened the package, the "posti" one was sealed.

Everything is working fine though, that's important :)

You could as well do a nice house of cards with them :) (BTW the nearest has no N900 tag in the upright corner)

Re: N900 device program for maemo.org developers and contributors

It was similar for me too. The replacement had the battery in and the battery cap was not firmly closed on all sides.

The new mac is only different in the last two digits but the new device doesn't reboot constantly. There are some occasional reboots but I have confidence to the Maemo guys and the next update.

The DDP people and especially Nora have been really friendly, profesional and quick in resolving the problem.
