The problem is most re-designs sacrifice features that the desktop app has. Alternatively nobody may create a mobile version since it takes time and interest.

If it hits one of the mobile bottlenecks (screen size, input method, performance limitations) and they haven't found a creative way to re-imagine and re-implement the said feature gracefully on the mobile version; then so be it; that feature is not suitable to be included in the mobile app.

But so far, I see mobile versions try to include clunky implementation of tricky features than leave them completely behind. What's not there (yet) is usually due to time/resource constraint and will be included in future versions.

Nokia killed the N900 platform when they didnt create a proper app store. No pro developer will touch the N900 as there is no money to be made. All these smartphones (droid, hd2, 3gs, etc) are just vehicles for applications ffs. Thank goodness for the bedroom developers rehashing 80s games or there'd be nothing.

kbeeveer46 has really summed up my thoughts towards the N900 on this thread so big thanks for that.

Whoever at Nokia thought that the OSS community would be able to rival the commercial sector needs their head looked at.

IMHO the majority of the people with these skills dont work for free.

I have been very happy with my n900 over the couple of months i have owned it. Now, however, there is something that is starting to annoy me quite a bit.

Non-developers are advised not to download the apps in extras which is sensible enough. The problem I have is the lack of any other sources for apps, eg ovi store which looks to have been abandoned with the beta label remaining after 5 or more months and the lack of any new apps. The ovi store has been literally inundated with one sensible new app in firefox over the past couple of months, but is filled with useless video clip type downloads.

I am now feeling slightly robbed as the device has a lot of potential, but lack of any official apps to follow this up. It is an internet tablet with phone capability and, unfortunately, not much else.

This is not solely a developer device and has not been marketed as such so a general consumer would expect some form of improvement, in line with other devices, for the selection of apps.

Is anyone aware of things changing on this or will novices be stuck with a semi functional device?

There is nothing wrong with downloading from extras, feel free to do so, the apps there have been tested and approve Keep away form extras devel and testing although

I agree. There no harm in getting apps from Extras.

Although the warnings about Extras Testing and especially Extras Devel are there for a reason, I must say that I enjoy a lot of apps from these repositorys even though I'm not a developer - not even close.

Of course, by doing so, I can't blame anyone but myself if I have to reflash or if my phone starts to get lazy around the edges.

I'm not trying too lure you and others into trouble, I'm just putting the tested Extras repository into the right context. :)

I haven't been paying any attention to the warnings about extras-devel and extras-testing for months, and haven't suffered any serious consequences. I have always found the warnings hysterical.

But let me add a few cautions:

1. I don't install games. If games are secretly destroying people's systems, I wouldn't know it.

2. I carefully check to make sure I have some rootfs space left, and it something seemed to take up a lot of rootfs space, I would probably delete it.

3. My impression is that fewer apps have optification problems than they used to, so dangers are a lot less these days.

4. I am not afraid to flash my N900 when I feel nervous or think it is acting funny. I am a fan of doing eMMC flashing, and think that practically everyone should flash their eMMC at least once.

With the attitude I summarized above, I haven't had any problems for ages; of course, that doesn't mean I won't have big problems tomorrow.

More Apps for the N900 please!
 

Hey guys,

before I say anything else, I love my n900! However, when trying to convince a friend of mine it was the best phone on the market, he went for the HTC Desire instead, purely because of the range of apps it has and he likes one that helps him with golf!

I too am also frustrated by the lack of good apps to play with. I know that alot of the apps on the iphone are pretty pointless and dont really help life other than to pass time showing it off to mates. I'm not interested in these types of apps which is why i didnt get sucked into the iphone frenzy!

I would like to see some more apps that improve my life on a daily basis. preferably more desktop widgets. But really, I'd just like to see more in general. I know that meamo 5 isnt as established as anrdoid and iphone os and these things take time, but neverless I want to be able to show my mate that he made the wrong decision! I also appreciate that with the move towards Meego that this makes the future of developing apps a little unsure.

Do you think that the move to MeeGo will make more apps available? I have no idea about these things and no clear message seems to come across the forums.
