[Maemo 5] We need more apps! Why aren't there more applications in Ovi Store and Extras?

I thought the Nokia n900 had been out in the US so wouldn't there be more applications by now?

Thats 12 more than N900's in stores :(

Re: Why are there only 12 applications?

Those 12 applications are the ones that have made it through the (much more) rigorous testing process.

There are many more application in testing and almost ready for production, and still more being developed but not yet ready for testing.

Until recently there weren't many testers to actually try out applications and allow them to be promoted. Things should speed up now that many people have devices in their hands.

I need a real device for two different projects, interacting with two different pieces of hardware.

Re: Why are there only 12 applications?

Don't forget a large part of the legacy Maemo apps will work on the N900. People will think these 12 apps are the only ones, but that's not the case. Those 12 are just for Maemo 5 only. The others work as well, though.

Re: Why are there only 12 applications?

for those interested in the apps, the ovi store has finally opened with 1 item right now... but days before when I tried to log on it said that there are some errors. Sign of phones shipping? ;)

edit: store.ovi.com

When i use the Ovi store and search "nokia n900" i get:

We were unable to find any results for nokia n900. You can try a different search or browse through our recommended items below.

I would do it for your FMradio if I knew how to do that.

Please give us advise.

Go to: http://maemo.org/packages/repository...xtras-testing/
Click in the package version and you'll see a comments box and the "package karma".

The apps are currently in Extras-Testing, not in Extras. You have to add Extras-Testing, test the apps, and vote for them to get them into proper Extras.

Do all apps from previous Maemo versions work?

solpete 2009-12-12 14:25

Come on bring more apps... its like 0.5 new apps per day now :)

Or is it just me not being able to find them?

There should be a stickie for newcomers where to find apps and games. Dont mention just this site please.

i know it is getting increasingly frustrating how there arent many apps and the apps that are there, not many end users will find useful...esp GAMES, apps to find movietheatres around etc that kinda usefull stuff.

Are you looking for things to start with ?

A "New Email" widget, like the one for messages, would be awesome! A possibly a realistic place to start ?

You can help getting more apps for N900 users by betatesting what is coming: http://wiki.maemo.org/Extras-testing

Re: Come on bring more apps... its like 0.5 new apps per day now :)

another great source is easy-debian.

when you are willing to test here you can install any linux application within the debian repositories.

though they are not optimized for the small screen and many of them behave a little strange due to N900-limitations

installed abiword and gnumeric (spreadsheet and writing-apps)
they run great!

openoffice will run as well but it is very slow.

Do you have to register somewhere to be a Betatester?

since i have purchased the N900 i have tried to obtain apps from Extras-testing but it has failed everytime.

the error i get is

http://repository.maemo.org/extras-t...armel/Packages 404 Not found [IP.92.123.153.49 80]

http://repository.maemo.org/extras-t...armel/Packages 404 Not found [IP.92.123.153.49 80]

any ideas how to resolve. i would really like to test new applications, since MfE is not working i'm not really doing much with the phone.

Re: Come on bring more apps... its like 0.5 new apps per day now :)

We only need one app. an application that masks the identity of the
n900.
An app that that holds the serial number of an iphone that you go through which means you can download and use all the the apps from itunes if someone could make that there would b e no need for the rest

Some will say imposible i would say not. Yes there both hold different OS but with the n900 being open source should mean the iphone could be decoded and mirrored to the n900 so that you could use the apps

Alex Atkin UK 2009-12-13 12:44

Re: Come on bring more apps... its like 0.5 new apps per day now :)

Just as you could run Windows Mobile apps on the N900 - if someone spent 10 years working on an API compatibility layer.

Granted, the iPhone should be simpler as a lot of the core OS is the same and many bits which the iPhone relies on are open source. However it would still likely take years of hard work to fully emulate and by then Apple will have changed so much.

People need to remember, just because something CAN be done, doesn't mean it can be done in a time frame that is useful. It also doesn't mean they wouldn't get sued to death long before it reached usability status. It doesn't even matter if it was proved to be legal, you would need the money for court costs to fight it and it would take money/time away from the project itself.

WineARM ? Nice idea !

Indeed, it's not because something is possible that is will be done ;)
If someone here wants a specific piece of software, you should learn programming and make it yourself.

That said, I also think that there are too few apps on the N900. I hope Ovi Sotre's opening will fix this.

not necessarily you dont c everyone taken to court because they have an iphone thats jailbroken so you could think of it as the n900 being jailbroken.

Plus i dont see why it should take years because if you tke the iphones firmware to the n900 all you need to do is get the n900 to read it and accept it a kind of middle man application

I have seen a lot of people complaining about the lack of apps, did you guys already realized that all of these apps are free, and we are (the community) working for free in our spare time for you guys.
I think you guys should respect and give more value to this effort, but if you guys like to paid for apps fine, the OVI store is coming anyway :)

As said earlier you can help here, testing the apps in the extras-testing repository, there's more than 70 apps there, waiting for you :p

Of course I appreciate the dev's work (beign one myself in my free time - not yet on Maemo), but the fact is that most of the apps are just ports, not new apps, and I think Ovi Store would give us access to many more new apps (I don't care paying for an app if it is good, I think it's normal to pay for a developper's work).

Wish I could give more than one 'thanks' per post

I, for one, am deeply thankful (and just a little amazed) at people giving their time and skills to create apps, designs and increased functionality.

@kalim13:
can you give output/screenshot (ctrl+shift+p) of your application-manager dialog for extras-testing-repository

in many posts here there was some mis-spelled character or word

Re: Come on bring more apps... its like 0.5 new apps per day now :)

@Footballdt23: If it's so easy, why don't you do it? You'd be a hero to a lot of people here. And if you're not worried about getting sued, I'm sure you could sell it and make a nice little lump of cash.
