Boot videos thread

Since we now have the option to use fancy new boot videos (by the way, the maemo.org one is really slick), I decided to make a thread for anyone who wants to post their own boot videos.

Here's one I quickly made in After Effects:

http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/805039/maemo/blur.gif

Download the .avi here:

http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/805039/maemo/blur.avi

So, please create something and post it here, so we'll have more choises if we don't like the Nokia Hands -one.

Re: Boot videos thread

I've come up with two concepts (thank to claesbas for the C4D file) based on the maemo.org logo.

The first is a simple fly-in. Camera track is kinda "meh" but it's interesting enough. Needs a sound effect to go with it.

The second (also in black) is a combination of ideas from both timeless and lcuk and requires a little imagination to get the full effect (since I don't have the recorded sound effect I need yet). Basically, picture the sound the N900 (or N810) keyboard makes as it snaps open when the .org pops in and you'll have the idea. ;)

Apologies for the .mov, too lazy to re-encode and that's the only format Cinema 4D spits out on OS X. Have some more ideas forthcoming (might try something like the X fly-over from Leopard).

I like the second one.. and with the sound of a opening nXXX it would be so cool (great idea!). :-) The black one really look solid.

EDIT: I should post a link to my Glassy 3d anim to: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=32935

Well here is my take on a maemo 5 boot video:

Youtube link if you just want to look at it :D: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mH8HlEUimD0
Created in blender.

Is there a way to just disable boot videos and have verbose boot messages?

If someone would make some for the subcommunities (okay, I'm begging for one for Maemo-Freak...), you may be able to pad your Paypal account. Is anyone willing to do custom work?

I could make one if you give me some ideas what it should look like. Oh yeah, I'm just doing this for fun so no bribes needed. ;)

(Jumping for joy!!)
Yipee! Since you're making it, Just something with a dark background, maybe a little fly by action and some shiny stuff. :D
I've attached a copy of our logo, which is actually a 3d object, but I don't have a copy of it. Hopefully you can work with it.

I'd love to have a first person view of pics of the RIM, Apple, WinMo, WebOS, and Android logos side by getting shot down like the ducks at a carnival target shooting game. Spin camera view to view the N900 with a smoking gun pointed at the camera on its screen, which vanishes and is replaced by our logo, which zooms in to fill the actual shot onscreen, and then the words appear underfoot like in the logo pic I uploaded.

That's pretty elaborate, but I'll take whatever you give me, since I have plenty ideas but little in the way of animation skills. You may have other ideas that are just as cool. Feel free to put your name or organization on the screen to get credit.;)

Re: Boot videos thread

i would also like to know if it's possible to disable the videos and have a clear black or text output boot. Also, what does it use for displaying the boot video and at which point does it show it?

wow, sounds really of general interest... *sarcasm*

:D

(anyway, the more boot videos available, the better, even if I would never use one branded to a specific website.. if he's ok to create this one, good for you!)

Re: Boot videos thread

i can promise you our 100,000 mebers will generally be interested. I'd like to see one for every Maemo subcommunity. Many of the Maemo sites would love a custom boot screen.

Re: Boot videos thread

I got some pretty nice ideas what the boot video would look like. I'm going to pick up my unit in half an hour so I'll probably be pretty busy playing with it for a few days. But I promise, you'll get your video ;)

christexaport: I'm gonna need a higher resolution version of the *-freak logo since the one you have posted is a size of a poststamp.

Despite that I'm reading this thread to keep track of whether anyone's posting a "no-video, just boot messages" solution, I have to admit that's pretty STUNNING! Nice one!

If anyone's up for another challenge, I'd *LOVE* to have one of the Maemo-Guru....guru...running into the scene, or something, doing maybe a flip and landing in the logo position? I don't know, but I figure a humanoid character could be fun to tinker with.

The higher resolution version or do I need to trace the image?

christexaport 2009-12-08 09:43

Re: Boot videos thread

I'm not sure what you need, but you can recreate it however you need to. Trace it, make a claymation model, whatever. I'm not too skilled with graphic stuff. Which higher resolution version? I don't have a better one. My admin does, but he's too busy for stuff like that. I do good to get press emails and stuff. It's just our small staff...

joppu 2009-12-08 09:47

Re: Boot videos thread

I assumed that if you want something specific, you should provide the required assets. But no problem, I'll trace it then.

Re: Boot videos thread

I should, and if I could, I would, but I don't. I'd rather you tried, since it may take longer than my Amazon delivery to get the real thing.

Re: Boot videos thread

in which format are these files?
I tried to convert another video into a AVi containing a H264, but my N900 keeps on telling me that the codec is not supported. but it looks like the original video is also in this format.
maybe some other ideas?
