An Alternative Boot Video ( The Power of Open. )

Since we've all discovered that you can indeed change the boot splash video, here is my take on just that. (Borrowing such a topic from claesbas, hope you don't mind :) ). Four versions later and a whole lot of wasted homework time brings...

A semi/final version of it (Made in blender3D):

And the video itself:

Comments? Crits? As they say in artist forums.

Edit:
Background lightened, contrast improved, motion blur added. Version 5, same link as above.

I like it! Blender is the right tool for a maemo boot video. Is it possible to add motion blur in Blender? I think that would give your animation a much smoother look. I would darken the star/space background abit too.

Otherwise just great!

I know about the spilled hours! LOL! hehe, I am now sitting with my (paid) other projects and it is now 01:13 and I have yet a few hours work. Its impossible to go away when you get going. :)

Love it, thank you so much.

I got a critter indeed. Right before the fullscreen "Maemo.org power of open" pops up some windows float on the middle, moving to bottom, slighlty to right. One of them is quite bright, and this did not feel good on eyes, esp first time. I suggest to make that one less bright because the contrast difference with the black changes too rapidly. Screenshot attached for Claire Ehtii. Just my 2 ct... :)

Alright, lightened the background and the screenshot of ovi maps and the image browser (pictured in allnameswereout's post) in addition to rendering with motion blur for version 5.

Will edit the original post when finished rendering (motion blur makes it take 8times longer :/ ).

I didn't want to edit the picture, maybe I should have. For clarity: my reference is to the one in the middle of the screen. The exact middle, from which final logo stems from. You see, right after that it becomes black. The one which is more bright but on the right bothers me less.

Argh. The larger one, above of the 2nd circle. I've marked it red in attachment.

The others don't bother me.

It may be just me btw.

(I mean... the first part of the tune reminds me of Winamp  :D)

:o, could just be you, that one is the same one as the other ones on the edges, and it was very similar to the background color so I didn't mark it heh.

It is similar as others indeed, but if one is focused on middle of screen.... OTOH on this screen I stare, is different than Nokia N900. :)

Re: An Alternative Boot Video ( The Power of Open. )

The video seems to overwhelm the device at the "break". Perhaps too much motion?

This is just in the media player, haven't put it into my start sequence...

Hi,

I don't know if it is just me but aren't there some frames missing?
I mean in the last 1,5 secs. The black backgroung comes to the fore, it's ca. 3/4 done and suddenly it ist completly black.
feels like there's a "jump" in the animation....

Other than this: I like it :-)

BTW: I used Winamp 5.56 to watch it

Re: An Alternative Boot Video ( The Power of Open. )

Hm, Maybe I shouldn't have encoded it in 100% quality...
Edit: Version 6, recompressed, half the size now.

the motion blur looks good now.. the explosion is beautiful!

It seems like even the n900 has some trouble in moving alot of pixels quickly then. It can play higher bitrate video but the very fast scenes it still struggles some. It doesn't seem to be the quality/file size but mor in moving all pixels quickly in each frame.

We should try to find what codec it likes the most. there are some different h264 codecs around perhaps it is optimized with one special and not all the other. If I render out some different ones on a test video would someone be kind and test them for me on n900?

I will test them, but I can't promise anything more than my unscientific "this one seems smoother" kind of comment...

For the N900 this should do it:

According to Karoliina:

"As a matter of fact the hildon-welcome is fully configurable.
You don't need to remove/replace the Nokia hands animation file to add your own animation or sound to the startup. Hildon-welcome supports unlimited number of "logo animations" (either video or image+sound) in sequence. It reads all configuration files in the hildon-welcome.d folder and interprets them in alphabetical

Instructions:

1- Copy the video to /usr/share/hildon-welcome/media
2- Go to /etc/hildon-welcome.d/ and edit the default.conf file or create a similar one (the videos will play by the alphabetic order of the .conf files)

However b-man is working on an controlpanel applet to make it easy
