Transfer files to nokia n810 without Usb?
Is there any way I can transfer files from my laptop to my n810 wirelessly? My laptop does not have bluetooth but is connected to the same network, is there any way to do it?

Windows file sharing, ftp server on PC/ftp client on tablet, add bluetooth to your laptop, plug the tablet in via USB. Lots of options.

Email if you are really lazy, ssh if you are not

step to step: file transfer between winPC and tablet using SSH
You can thank bunanson for kindly laying this out. (OK, you can thank me, too, for telling you about it ;) ) |
Re: Transfer files to nokia n810 without Usb?
Isn't the easiest way to do this is to share your folder in your OS and then use the network sharing icon in the file manager to navigate to the shared desktop folder? e.g., samba/ network neighborhood

@hordeman: "shared folder" is the easiest, but very UNreliable. bun |

SFTP with Cyberduck.

winSCP on a windows PC to push the files over - just drag and drop.
for the occasional file, bluetooth works as well but more slowly. --edit-- I mean winSCP |
Re: Transfer files to nokia n810 without Usb?
Since there appears to be no solution to just getting access to windows shared files simply in the filemanager, I will probably just switch my desktop back to xp....since I only use it really for watching movies in bed and a few other things.

Re: Transfer files to nokia n810 without Usb?
kde has a kioslave offering smb://blahblah to access remote shared.
I imagine gnome has similar. yup, nautilus has it too. |
Re: Transfer files to nokia n810 without Usb?
Solved the problem, I simply turned off password protected sharing... I never saw the setting before and now I can see all of my windows 7 shares just fine.

Re: Transfer files to nokia n810 without Usb?
I can't believe this is so difficult to do. I am using the N800 while the N900 is being repaired, and bluetooth file sending rarely works. Always tells me the device doesn't like the file type. Trying to find the right cable is tiresome.

Re: Transfer files to nokia n810 without Usb?
What a shame that Windows, Samba, file sharing works so poorly between a Windows PC and the N810. I run Ubuntu on my Desktop which I wire connect to a WiFi access router. When I select folder sharing in Ubuntu the files appear in the N810's File Manager. USB cable is the easiest and Bluetooth file send and receive works well between Ubuntu and the N810. I use Bluetooth for single file transfers and the cable for mass folder transfers because it's faster.

Re: Transfer files to nokia n810 without Usb?
I find that windows sharing between my N800 and 810, and the rest of my machines is fine via windows shares. And I have Windows machines, an Ubuntu laptop, a Mythbuntu server, and a cheapie NAS disk enclosure.
The only thing is that the shares have got to be open without a password as the NITs cannot do password authentication. I have copied GBs of videos and music files down wirelessly, and it works great for me just about everytime. Only thing I cannot get working is to launch a video from a share, and have mplayer start playing it automatically. |
Re: Transfer files to nokia n810 without Usb?
I've been sorta doing an odd dance with sharing files between my desktop, my iPhone 3GS and my N810. On my non-jailbroken iPhone, I have the Air Sharing app. Fire up my browser on my PC/Mac/Linux machine, upload the file to the wifi connected iPhone. Then from the N810, I download from the iPhone onto my N810.
With that said... that's how I do it. Would love an application like Air Sharing on my N810. But that... doesn't exist. But it should. |
Re: Transfer files to nokia n810 without Usb?
I almost exclusively use Linux so excuse me if I'm forgetting something regarding other platforms...
I prefer sshfs for this task. Using ssh (which is pretty platform agnostic) can mount remote file systems as local. SSHFS however requires Linux* client. For example if the client is N810 no issues. if the client is iphone kinda screwed. If the client is Windows, there is DokanSSHFS which emulates the needed Linux kernel pieces and is extremely slow. The beauty of it is that you can run a SSH server such as MobaSSH on Windows, OpenSSH-server on Linux, AFAIK openssh is default in OSX, and I believe there are ssh servers for android, symbian, ifone, etc. You need FUSE and sshfs packages installed (and I honestly don't recall what other dependencies) on client (assuming N810) then: $ sshfs USER@remotemachine:/directory/ /mount/point $ sshfs root@192.168.1.100:/ /media/desktop will allow you to access the entire filesystem of another machine as if it were local (which means any program can see it, no dealing with which programs are aware of SAMBA shares or what not). Obviously the mount point has to exist and have correct permissions. It would then be available in whatever filemanager you want (provided you can navigate to it. a good mountpoint for the default filemanager would be /home/user/MyDocs/remote ). Maybe this is too much of pain in a mixed environment but it keeps my N810, x86 Linux desktop and NAS all on the same page. EDIT: Also for "dumb" clients, the python script woof.py is awesome. Works over the internet if you forward/open a port on your router and only requires a web browser on the client side. |
