Just updated my streak to Dell's official froyo 2.2.1 last night and WOW! Flash 10.1, 720p video capture, live wallpaper, etc. is awesome on the streaks 5' screen:)

Re: Dell Releases What n900 Should Have Been (Dell Streak)

Yes I agree, the Froyo upgrade is transformational.

While I am looking forward to the release of the Dell version, I have no interest in adopting it.
It is needed to provide information to allow DJ_Steve to complete his ROM.

He must be close by now.

Interesting... What make Froyo so different in experience? Are you referring to the change from 1.6?

Rebski 2010-11-23 13:21

Re: Dell Releases What n900 Should Have Been (Dell Streak)

As Average Joe said Live Wallpapers are actually more cool then than the gimmicky concept would suggest. I love them and can see them evolving into an art form. They are definitely a worthwhile enhancement

The big plus factor is Flash, not that I am a fan of Flash and probably agree with Steve Jobs.
But Flash is incredibly ubiquitous and it is a nonsense to be deprived of access to it. I don’t care if Flash becomes obsolete in the future but it should be incorporated now. So when it is finally part of your device you get a sense of completeness which is justified.

Now I can watch BBC iPlayer broadcasts, to cite one major example.

Many apps and their significant upgrades depend on 2.2 Froyo so I no longer have my nose up against the shop window wishing for something I can’t have.

There may be other benefits to Froyo that I am unaware of and I am happy to be updated.

4.8", 1024*480 and looks good to hold.

236 PPI

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget....hone-press.jpg

141.7 x 64 x 13.3mm 170g

That's versus 152.9 x 79.1 x 10 mm 220g of the Streak

Oh I don't know, isn't it too big to be phone and too small to be a tablet.

The Acer phone looks nice.
If I had to choose between the physical hardware (size etc) I'd choose it over the Dell Streak which is just too large imho.

Anyone seen this?

Engadget responded to my message and now they are slowly updating the reviews for phones that got software updates, of course they started this with the iPad review seeing as it is a techblog run by Apple *rollseyes

That looks exactly like the right size of screen - small enough to carry in a pocket, large enough (dimensions and resolution) to work comfortably.

a 5" screen is still 5" and that can't be altered. What Acer is doing is to increase the thickness of the device with a corresponding reduction on the other dimensions.

So that would be your choice. One of the reasons that the Streak is wonderfully manageable and pocketable is on account of its thinness. Your opinion not withstanding.

I've manhandled the Streak.
I gotta say it's quite thin but the border/bezel around it is larger than average. When I put it in my pocket (jeans) it was definitely uncomfortable but it was bearable.
The thinness helps but the actual device is too large imho.

This is coming from a guy who used the N95 and the XDA II.
In fact the Streak felt exactly like the XDA II but a little larger and little lighter.

Have a look at the Acer, its 4.8" compared to 5" and the surrounding borders are not as big ... so it is smaller.

I'd have to end by re-iterating this:

Just noticed that the Acer screen's aspect ratio is 21:9, so direct comparison of the diagonal is misleading. The Dell (16:9) would be roughly 4.35"x2.45" while the Acer 4.41"x1.89", ie just a bit wider (in landscape orientation) but half an inch shorter.

To be honest I think this is too wide for me, I would prefer even 4:3 ratio for my uses (not media).

I just bought a streak recently.. and IMHO i love the n900 so much more.. but man it really sucks with the lack of application the n900 suffers from. I have both at the moment and will probably keep the streak for the future, since i hope to get in the app business. not to mention playstion suite... but man browsing on the n900 and muti tasking was so much better.

Picked up my Streak last month after a friend returned from the USA and picked up a unlocked one.

Funny I have a SGS too yes the screen is better on the SGS really thats about it!
I love the 5" streak screen and think it's just right for youtubeing, games and web browsing and still small enough to fit in my jacket pocket without getting in the way.
I dont think any phone/tablet should go over this size if they want to be 'mobile' too.

Very happy! but sad that my n900 is no longer getting used as it should... but then it could have been everything the streak is. Damn you Nokia.

LATER EDIT: You may have been talking about the video on this page and not the one at the start of the thread like I first assumed... my bad... anyhoo.

For for dell:
Yep is does have a compass, GPS and Market access too, something some other 'tablets' dont have.

I think that vid was shot with 1.6 and it look/runs much better on 2.2 now. EDIT: Dell stage is just nasty but can be disabled and replaced

Funny that games play better on it, E.G. Angry Birds has no stuttering or slow down unlike my SGS with it's 'lag fix'
Over all it feels faster than my SGS (and the Wifes too)

Well, after using Dell Streak for 1 month now, I don't look back. N900 has lots of advantage, but 5 inch screen makes the different. Kindle, Asphalt, Flash 10 (yes, Colbert, yes!), watching divx and tv, with big screen is excellent ! And there are more apps.....

Froyo is really great, but I miss the video chat on Skype, and I miss that FM transmitter..... But well you can't have everything, can you :)

Cheers,

i wanted some advice guys,

i want a phone/tablet kinda like what n900 right now but i want a bigger screen and dell streak 5 looks just right for browsing and watching videos online. is it worth getting it now or wait for a 4.3 SGS2 with super amoled plus?

for those of you who've used the dell streak 5 how long the battery last for mostly browsing?

im also looking at ramos w7 mid but it seems its only android 2.1 and no 2.2 option at the moment.

Dont get it, my friend purchased one and its not as great as it looks.

My advice with any android phone would be to get something that supports the Cynogen flash mod. Basically all manufacturers add bloatware and stupid changes to the Android OS that gimp the system.

A phone supported by Cynogen will let you flash the entire device into stock Android which will run like a dream even on a rubbish HTC wildfire.

I think that a good general rule in this fast-paced situation is not to buy anything unless you just can't resist. I think there are more five-inch devices to come soon -- from Archos, for example, and more from Dell, etc.

Actually there isn't much bloatware in the O2/Dell OS - I can't speak for US carriers though.

In the meantime, why not just flash with DJ-Steve's rom? That gets you to a very pure Android. And it is fast, many of us report Quadrant scores of around 1,750.

too bad its only RK1228(ARM11) and not RK2919(Arm Cortex A8) and its only Android 2.1. Still it makes a decent 5 inch device.

I have no experience of this particular device or manufacturer but i do have experience of similar China low end devices. In my cases a SmartQ.

My problem was one of expectation, I assumed that it would perform in the way that I had come to expect from well known brand names and it doesn't, never has and never will.

So a degree of caution is called for before shelling out the $'s.

Re: Dell Releases What n900 Should Have Been (Dell Streak)

Over on The Epic Android thread I mentioned that on long 14 hour journeys I used carry up to 6 devices but now I only carry the Streak. My experience might be a useful subject for a post here.

This was my previous carry list and why the Streak has replaced it:

Mobile Phone
iPhone : Replaced by the Streak

Music Player
iRiver H140 + iBasso amplifier: The Streak sound quality when matched with Sennheiser IE8’s is closely comparable, to the extent that I can’t easily discern the difference. Not so much with RE0’s however.

Video Chat with my family
Nokia N800: The software for the Streak is not yet there for this but the hope is that it will arrive with Honeycomb

eBook Reader
SmartQ 7: The Streak is better both for screen quality and clarity and versatility in apps such as pdf reader Repligo and web page downloaders Instapaper and Read It Later

Video Player
Nokia N800: The Streak is better by way of bigger screen
SmartQ 7: Unsuitable due to lack of optimisation for video

PDA
Sharp Zaurus: Only because it contained data that was useful to have and which I hadn’t taken the time to transfer it over. But now I have. Curiously, the Zaurus apps are generally superior to what is currently available.

iPhone: Incredible selection of apps but thankfully there are now Android equivalents for the Streak so I don’t miss the App Store that much anymore. Android still has room for improvement in this respect but it is no longer the poor relation it once was.
Note Everything, Evernote and HandDBase are exceptionally useful. Office suites such as Documents To Go are quite respectable

SatNav and Maps
Nokia N800: The combination of Google Maps and the 5” Streak makes the N800 look feeble. So, even if the lifetime licence which I paid for was still honoured, I wouldn’t use it anyway.

If anyone is thinking of getting a Streak then these observations might be useful in their decision making.

This thing looks excellent and it will hit the US and will probably be in the 250 dollars range. Finally a true inexpensive alternative to the Dell Streak. Of course I'm not going to buy this when it comes out I will wait and see what the new 5 inch Archos generation 9 will be like.

This is does not seem to have a SIM card so no mobile network 3G Data or phone calls? Which would explain the price.

It seems that it is going to be called WiFi 5.0. There are some demonstrations of it here

It is just great to see this screen size form factor being supported.

Many wanted a wifi only dell streak but dell didn't offer it in 5 inch form. This is pretty that. Of course the build quality probably isn't as good as the Dell Streak or Archos 5. It has the same camera from the Galaxy S which is many times better than the one of the Dell Streak.

Without mobile phone capability then it is of little interest to me. I see no point in having to carry two similar screen size devices.

But as you say, "Many wanted a wifi only dell streak" so I guess the answer is to offer a choice as per the Samsung 7" Tab.

be warned that the existing/older "galaxy player" devices have only a physical similarity to the galaxy S phones - lower res, slower CPU etc.

these new devices look like being much more like an exact copy of the phone without 3g/gsm; ideal for a teenager (such as my daughter) as you can install skype and chat programs etc and rely on wifi!
