Products are often delayed, sometimes for months on end but they do it behind closed doors, either that or companies release beta crap.

Nokia has seemingly decided to it in public with the N900 to build interest and keep devs informed. Just be glad you even know about the N900 and that Nokia is ensuring a quality product on release.

You know, when Eldar came here and said that N900 isn't going to be ready for sale, a bunch of people on this forum said pretty nasty things. I have never said anything bad about Nokia, but these "tiny" delays are really awful move from them. I as a customer think that i should not come every few days on a forum or on a blog and search if something is changed again. I only want fair and honest response: "You can expect your phone by dd.mm.yyyy, so i can know when i will be charged, and when i should get my phone (if i plan some trip etc.). These aren't the best days for Nokia, and you can call me whatever you want, but you can't say that's not true. Droid is coming in a few days and it will be only worse. What's the worst thing? Nokia is lying itself and us too that they will have their product ready. That's not good for business. What about official announcement? Tnx Peter for coming here but that's not official. We heard a lot of "in October for selected markets, for sure" from couple of guys who work in Nokia. Better to have a final date even in December than to f*ck with all their potential customers.
And btw, since you don't care what i think, i expect you to shut up and watch your own business.

It's ok to reply to my post, but telling me not to post anymore and that i'm a whiny bastard is certainly not. First time i wrote something like that, because i have my reasons (a secure date is really important to me as my friend should bring it to me and he should plan his trip on time) and i am offended by some guy who thinks he is funny.
If he doesn't care about it, then why he even reads this thread?

Yes a secure date is important - and since Nokia NEVER GAVE ONE, why are you still dribbling on about "all these small delays". At worst its been one 2 week delay. ONE.

Just go off and buy your droid or whatever and leave the adults to play with the big people toys

Geez, I thought I was impatient as I am stuck using a Samsung C100 until my N900 appears. Yet I am STILL not close to as pissed as some people on here.

Even though every time I leave the house I think "crap, if only I still had my Xperia I at least could get on the web", then I remember I am waiting for a true Linux based NIT/Phone and thank that I am rid of Quallcrap and Windows Slowbile.

Its annoying waiting, nobody denies that, but if you are getting this upset about a little delay I really hope you do cancel because you will REALLY piss and moan once you have one and "x piece of software is not available".

I wonder how many "Nokia shouldn't have released the N900 in this state!" posts we will get once it IS finally released?

I was waiting for the N97 in June. Was disappointed with the Android, so was waiting for new phones on my ATT contract to sell in August to fund the N97 purchase. Then I got busy and went to look for a good price on the N97 in Sept and "stumbled" across the N900! WooHoo! I would have been real torqued off had I bought the N97 now. So I've had the watch on for a New phone since really around May. If you want a REAL Linux phone, this is it though, it has no competition. You just gotta suck it up and wait.

Is anyone running a poll for picking the date on which the phone will be officially released?

It would have been good if it was in October as Nokia have said, but these things happen. It would be interesting to see if all the people getting upset had ever submitted an essay late or ever been involved in development that shipped late or whatever.

If the phone winds up being as good as it may well be all this will be forgotten.

Good meet up in Chicago tonight. There were 6 or 7 Nokia reps who had N900s. You could chat them up and try the phone. Pretty good feel to the N900. The black matte finish doesn't show fingerprints, however, the screen does.

Anyway, I had about 12 applications running at once (over wifi not TMobile) and they snapped open and closed pretty fast. Some good integration of Skype (we'll see how the lawsuit against EBay goes), Google Talk and SIP. Skype account info was updated into your address book. Someone changes their phone number it will automatically change in your phone book.

Calendar synthesizes multiple calendars into one (Ovi) calendar. Really great integration of Qik on the phone for immediate uploading to Facebook, Youtube and Ovi. The N900 was plugged into a 40 inch plasma set and we went through what the interface looked like as well as what media and games looked like. Pretty nice.

Now for the part that folks are not happy about: the release date. Here is a quote "we are hoping for a November release...but definitely this year." There were a couple of gasps along with some chuckles. It was explained that after some of the developers had extended hands-on time with the N900, they came back with a "wish list". Nokia decided to try to bake those changes into the phone, pre-release rather than through any firmware update. They felt that "it was the right thing to do."

They feel that the developer community will support the Maemo platform because the QT application development tool will allow cross platform development (write an app on QT for Symbian and it will work on Maemo, and vice versa). That was cool to hear. You could see where the new applications would mushroom out, over time.

It sounds like there may be 2 other N900 meet ups (Moscow + either Barcelona or Madrid) as well as "informal" or grass roots meet ups (they called them shadow events).

In sum: really nice product. I will get one. I just don't know when they will be released.

I am also going to post this on the GDGT board, verbatim, as I don't feel like typing it out again. So if you are on both boards, sorry to "double post"

I hope I'm not reposting a question already asked but I dnt have the time to read through this entire thread to double check... can any one validate if Newegg is a good reputable place to get the N900. I only ask because it has it for cheaper then my stamding preorder with amazon. it also has an actual date on the site for the release on Nov 14th. :confused:

It makes perfect sense that following on from the 300, they want to improve the firmware rather than just sort bugs. Maybe we'll see portrait mode in the release. What else did the 300 request? Anyone out there can tell us?

What I would say was a tad 'silly' on their part was the timing of the 300 in the original release plan. Deciding to completely revise their release plan from "After the 300 respond we will sort bugs" to "After the 300 we will make significant changes" was very late decision making. If that had been even a very faint possibility, then the Official Release Date should have been set for three months after the summit.

I guess that's what Dr Jaaksi was taking responsibility for on his blog.

i think that the popularity of n900 was a big surprise to nokia. especially after n97 had a lot of complaints that it doesn't work well. and it seems they have to make sw lot more better to not disappoint majority who doesn't have a clue about OS2008 and older maemos.

Yep I think that's probably true. Except this is a huge cell phone global giant we're talking about. They're not supposed to be surprised. That's what's silly and disappointing. ;)

But I can live with it being even cooler. And having missed this week, it will arrive at an inconvenient moment whenever it appears.

lol.. I really gotta say that im glad to be apart of this community now. For the last few weeks i have been reading the nokia delay threads every morning before i head off to the university, and today i had good laugh (tags: kopt3, nuknuk, 300)..
