Email app like thunderbird.
Well i dont know how good nokias standard app is.
But on my pc i use thunderbird, and using 3 IMAP accounts. I would like have similiar app to N900 who can use 3 acc at sametime, and not need to log in to 1 acc to check that, then log out and so on. and see all acc at sametime to see if someone got a new mail. all i need to see is acc name and how many mails...example Toivosan (2) , toivosan 2 (1) toivosan 3 (8). And just need to click on the name to go into the inbox. Hopefull u all understand that blurry question =) |
Re: Email app like thunderbird.
I was about to start a similar thread, I use ProfiMail on E90 and it have similar features as Thunderbird (multi-account, large attachment support, HTML emails, custom interval updates etc..) and this is really an important factor since I do a lot of office work via email and get huge attachments (mostly PDF schematics) that needs a short review and reply. Hopefully the default client on Maemo won't be so limited or slow as the built in Symbian client on E90.

Re: Email app like thunderbird.
One thing Thunderbird does is to work well with IMAP servers with IMAP IDLE support. This way you can turn off the polling interval and new emails arrive instantly. Does modest support it? Claws doesn't (I use it much more now than in the past, as it's become better and better with upgrades).

Re: Email app like thunderbird.
I'm also a Thunderbird user and on my N810 I find the built in mail app, modest, to be too slow to use. I end up just using the web browser to read my gmail email.
It takes way too long for modest to refresh/load my mail. I really do wish there was a fast alternative. |
Re: Email app like thunderbird.
I have three email accounts running in modest with no issues except the occasional modest decided to stop working issue. :-)
I have it set for a relatively long update interval because I think people are so damn impatient these days. |
Re: Email app like thunderbird.
how are the accounts visible?
easy to acces. i would like to have them like i row or something similar. Googled for a video or pic how its build whit more then 1 acc. but no success, someone link? |
Re: Email app like thunderbird.
Isn't Claws mail similar in function Thunderbird?
|
Re: Email app like thunderbird.
Claws doesn't support IMAP IDLE (unlike Thunderbird), as far as I can tell.

Here is the Modest presentation from the Maemo 2009 summit
http://www.slideshare.net/jdapena/mo...aemo-summit-09 It looks like a great email client to me. |

Modest OTOH uses MBOX format. |

Claws-mail is really a full featured & customizable mail client (as much as Thunderbird IMO), but it's really not suited to small screen and finger usage. It's my main mail client, but it has required some training and it may not be for everybody - YMMV |

But then again neither does modest. Quote:

Re: Email app like thunderbird.
Evolution, or its netbook port called Anjal? Anjal is developed for Moblin, and is optimized for 1024x600 which is almost the same proportions and 800x480. I just tried it, and it looked OK. It is optimized for stylus/mouse though, and uses GTK/GNOME and Webkit. Here are some reviews and screenshots.

Re: Email app like thunderbird.
Anjal would be wonderful.
That is only if the calendar gets included. Looks like things are gradually happening: http://blogs.gnome.org/sragavan/ A port of Evolution in Anjal form (or any other form) would justify switching from WinMo to Maemo. A port of Korganizer/Kmail would also justify ditching WinMo but i'd much rather Evolution(far better calendar sorting/filtering). |
Re: Email app like thunderbird.
I once spent a little effort - but not enough - trying to get offlineimap running on my N800 - it works well with GMail, is effectively just a set of python scripts, and stores mail in a format that Modest can understand. It does two-way sync, so changes you do locally will get sent back to the server. I use it on a Ubuntu box to keep a local copy of my GMail messages.
I seem to recall there was a dependancy issue, and my Maemo guts skills are not really up to par to begin with, but it may be worth looking at. The usage would be that Modest just interacts with a local sorage, and offlineimap synchronizes with the server on a demand and availability (of WiFi link) basis. Joe. |

I find it absolutely incredible that so far there's no alternative to outlook equal in functionality. I would love to ditch MS Windows and Windows Mobile and move away any day but i just cant.
One of the major set backs is "custom view" functionality, which is absolutely crucial to operation (see attached image). Not one so called "outlook alternative" has this. Evolution comes closer than anything else but provides about only %50 functionality in comparison. There's no word to describe how much i don't understand developers on this. A little "sort, group and filter" provides so much more bang as opposed to a basic category filter(Korganizer). .......But we'd rather talk about widgets, sports trackers and other useless bits of crap. And it doesn't matter that it's just about 2010 outside. We'll wait another 10 years and wonder why...... Maemo forum is probably not the best place for this but i just couldn't resist. Thank you for your understanding. |

Andre,
For example: 1. How do i only display tasks with category names starting with "Home:" in Evolution??? 2. How do i group tasks or journal(memo) entires as shown on the picture below in Evolution??? There are many others(text formatting/field presentation) and they are all things that matter to me more than the OS choice. Don't forget that view customization in Outlook is the same across Mail/Tasks/Appointments/Notes/Journal. Also, i'm not just putting down linux alternatives - every other alternative linux or not(MS Entourage doesn't count) claims that it can do stuff but doesn't even come close!!! But it's so simple to get equal.... |
Re: Email app like thunderbird.
Ah, so you want subcategories and sorting by them... I see, true.

Re: Email app like thunderbird.
Andre,
I've made a number of suggestions to various developers over the years not to try to invent things but to bluntly replicate Outlook and ONLY THEN attempt to improve. Noone listens... We're not talking about the majority here - majority couldn't care more about this. But at the same time the amount of people interested is not something to sneeze at from the sales point of view. Anyway, i digress, i can provide a detailed list of what is in Outlook that is not in Evolution but it's easy enough to do yourself. In fact, www.go-evolution.org has a number of comments opposing Evolution to Outlook . Bottom line is that no other app does it better than Outlook today and I am deeply hurt by it. Bottom line #2 is that it's not difficult for developers to replicate the functionality(see my first attached image of "customize view" window), but noone feels the need to do it. Hence, to achieve the level of functionality i want i HAVE TO use Windows Outlook and Windows Mobile Pocket Informant. At the same time I am actively looking for alternatives and Maemo or Moblin are starting to look interesting. |

Also, I only referred to Anjal because of its e-mail capability. Not anything else. So e.g. calendar is different discussion, and has to be compared with Nokia's calendar included with Maemo 5 or the other alternatives for Nokia's stock calendar. For me, I really love the way the stock S60 client is integrated in the S60 OS. I know the application isn't perfect and lacks many features but the integration and navigation is top notch. Much better than Nokia Messaging. That performance of Anjal (for netbooks, Intel world) is less than performance of Modest (for tablets/smartphones/MID, ARM world) doesn't surprise me. But Anjal should be a bit more lightweight and more optimized for smaller interface which makes it a better starting point for Maemo port than Evolution. Quote:
Evolution 2.26.1 Memos/Tasks/Calendar works similar as Apple iCal. It supports different labels. Ie. it supports you label your memos/tasks/calendar and then allows you to enable or disable showing certain labels (and many other specific settings such as giving the labels their own color). It also has an advanced search feature which allows you to search (and hence 'filter'). I'll use Anjal this weekend in a 800x480 display to compare it with Evolution. |

There are still a lot of major no-nos: - No journal(memo is notes) - No timeline view - big no-no - No text autoformatting(see my first attached image) - No way to cutomize toolbar (xml file editing is no good) - big no-no - Filtering is not part of a single custom view - huge no-no. - Filtering by categories doesn't let you specify text - only set category names - big no-no - Outlook migration requires 3rd party tools - COME ON .... lot's of others No way I could make a move yet. With Intel putting Evo devs on their payroll things might get patched up by 2.40 i hope. That is all wishful thinking on my side, of course. |
