Quicknote - question and request

I use Quicknote a lot for short, quick notes and in my opinion it's by far the best tool available for that on my N810.

One question though - how do I add/delete categories?
I can select a note and click on move to category. I get a pop-up where I can select a category but every time I get to this point that box just sits on the screen and doesnt respond to Ok or Cancel and I have to kill Python to even close down Quicknote.

Apart from that Quicknote is one of my favorite apps ( http://maemo.org/downloads/product/OS2008/quicknote/ ).

Request:
I don't know if the developer is active here, but if..would it be possible to add a date-time stamp for the note you are looking at? Maybe to the right of the word 'Note' ontop of the screen.

Thanks for a super app.

Wow, I didn't know anyone else really used Quicknote. Maybe I should go ahead and look at porting it to the n900.

After providing some patches the original developers gave me free reign at making releases.

I don't remember how the deleting of categories working, I'll have to look into it but unfortunately I'll be busy for the next couple days.

You kidding? I love this app - best note taking app on the tablet.

No problem, I know you got a lot on your DC-plate as well :)

Appreciate all your work by the way. Thanks.

(Any other Quicknote users out there? Say Hi) :)

I am a Palm User. I had many models until the Palm TX. But now I abandoned my PALM, bought a N810. I need programs that have the philosophy of a PALM such notes into text. I write all points of meetings, during a visit to local customers (such as in warehouses), etc.. My Palm TX is a large database of information. I am a consultant and record meeting informations and "how to's" is important. Being able to do search notes and some private information, requiring a password (that lack the QuickNote). Continue to develop. There are many people who are using. I can not get out of sync with the desktop (installed on my ubuntu 9.04). How to do it?

I've never actually used sync. If you could file a bug on that and an enhancement request for password protection, I can look into these.

I am also using it. But I can not figure out how defining categories work.
Please advice.

What do you mean by defining categories? creating new categories? If so then
  1. UI is zoomed out (Ctrl+o)
  2. Select the category combo entry
  3. start typing (it is a bit fiddly on how this works, file bugs on anything you find)
  4. Create a new note

Re: Quicknote - question and request

Thanks. That worked.
The problem was Zoom level, which moved the category field outside viewing area.

I got a SSU update for quicknote on my N800 recently, and since then there has been no Search field and no way to search.

A port to the N900 certainly would expand the potential user group. I don't own a maemo device but I'm considering getting the N900. The question I have that needs answering before I decide is will the software be there to do what I need? I looked Quicknote up, but the info on the website was rather scarce. I understand it's a note taking app, and it supports categories. That's great! Does it also enable sorting by date of entry? Any other way to sort entries than by category?

I'd appreciate any information.

Thank you.

Zoom in / out (Zoom keys on n8x0, Ctrl+i and Ctrl+o on n900) seem to do it for me...

If those don't work, mind grabbing the log (Ctrl+l to copy it) and sending it along so I can take a gander?

Quicknote is in the QA process to be available for the n900 in the "Extras" application catalog.

Currently you can only view notes by Category. I think Conboy sorts notes by how recently you opened it.

You can file an enhancement request for other ways of sorting notes. This will help keep it on my radar as I look for what features to implement and bugs to fix. I am currently focused on other projects though and have only really been looking at bugs for Quicknote. Another positive thing about filing an enhancement request is if someone else decides to step it up with Quicknote, the transfer of knowledge goes more smoothly.

Re: Quicknote - question and request

Zoom-in/Zoom-out did reveal the Search field -- thanks!

Also glad to see you removed the redundant "New Note" from the left pane.

Nice, useful little app! Thanks!

Re: Quicknote - question and request

the first time I nstalled Quicknote on my N900 it worked fine.
But after the 1st Maemo update, it does not start up when I click on the Quicknote icon.

I uninsalled and reinstalled Quicknote after doing the Mameo 2nd update - still the same behaviour. The hourglass icon rotates for some time and then window closes down. Quicknote does not start.

Any pointers ?

Hmm. I've got the second update installed and can launch without issues. Oh fun fun fun.

Did you do any crazy hacks because of rootfs size issues?

Feel comfortable with the command line? Thats the next option for debugging this.

I'd be curious what the behavior is when running each of the following commands

Code:

~ $ /usr/bin/quicknote.py
~ $ /usr/lib/quicknote/quicknote_gtk.py

I'm experiencing the same behavior as Nilchak, and here's what I get:

You are right, I am missing a dependency for Quicknote, sadly for a feature it doesn't even use but its just in re-used code. This should have suddenly broken and the firmware update should not have uninstalled python-dbus when it was there (and I assume needed if it was there) previously. I'll try and push out a new version tonight

Re: Quicknote - question and request

I've put a new release in Maemo 5's extras-testing that fixes this issue.

Sadly Maemo 4.1 stuff for maemo.org seems to be having issues. Until I'm able to upload a new version a simple work around is to install something like Dialcentral which has the same dependency.

I'm assuming you are referring to Maemo 5 PR1.1?

What version of quicknote?

Quicknote depends on "python-xml | python2.5-xml". This means it accepts either. Maemo 5 should have "python-xml" in Extras while Maemo 4.1 should have "python2.5-xml".

I just checked the packaging for python-xml for Maemo 5 and it claims to be in Extras
http://maemo.org/packages/view/python-xml/

Is there any further information you can provide? Did you do any weird hacks in upgrading to PR1.1? What catalogs do you have enabled?

niqbal 2010-01-20 14:30

Re: Quicknote - question and request

first of all yes i did read it in description that i needed either pyrhon-xml or python2.5-xml. Neither of them appear in my apps. I refreshed application catalogs too, still i cant see these packages. No i did not do any hacks upgrading to PR1.1.

catalogs enabled do include maemo.org catalog previously called Maemo Extras. http://repository.maemo.org/extras/

python-xml is a library and does not show up in the application manager. It is meant to be handled transparently as in any applications libraries get installed automatically with the application.

My guess would be there is some kind of larger problem. Unfortunately to debug this situation will require some command line work. How comfortable with it do you feel? If I gave you some commands to try, do you think you could post the output?

niqbal 2010-01-20 14:40

Re: Quicknote - question and request

thats wat i thought earlier too abt being handled in the background. I think it had to do with application manager. It was acting up. Now i havent done anything extra besides reloading catalogs but its allowed me to install it now.

thanks guys.

I have not research what it takes to be backed up along with everything else as part of the Nokia backup system.

If you want to do it manually, either on the command line or with an advanced file browser copy the following files
Code:

/home/user/quicknote.s3db # Database
/home/user/.quicknote.dat # Unsure
/home/user/.quicknote # Log and settings

/home/user/quicknote.s3db

-> Nope, this files is stored in /home/user/MyDocs/quicknote.s3db instead.

When i restore it, my notes are gone. Basically from a quick glance, it seems the database has it's table structure, but no contents - in both backups (via BackupMenu) that i have.

Also,

/home/user/.quicknote.dat doesn't exit, but:

/home/user/.quicknote.dat.bak (zero bytes)
/home/user/.quicknote.dat.dat (zero bytes)
/home/user/.quicknote.dat.dir (zero bytes)

I still have the logfile (/home/user/.quicknote/quicknote.log) which shows the note GUIDs.

Can it be that:

During backup, the zero-byte files could not be read (it was from backupmenu which is basically runlevel 3 - can't be), or that Quicknote stores it's stuff somewhere else under Maemo?
