Oh id love to see some more information of the Sat Nav capability and while a digital compas would have been cool. Ive just Tom Tom on an Axim without a digital compas loads, at least 50% on foot. Ok you need to get your first bearing set. Walk in one direction and it'll pick it up. Yeah not 100% perfect but not the sole reason to dump a device.

If some one has a unit. I would really love some more info on the GPS and navifgation side. Its been badly lacking from reviews.

Still ive bought one, so no matter what i'll find out soon(ish http://talk.maemo.org/images/smilies/smile.gif) enough

If I recall right, that's the only thing that's missing on the N900 compared to the HD2 (which on the other side lacks stereo speakers, an IR-port, true multi-tasking, a high quality camera and a bunch more features). And the funniest thing about this is that the HTC HD2 still is more expensive than the N900!

So it's true after all that it's smart to be well informed!

I'm confused at all this hype about a digital compass... I used garmin on an n95 to get somewhere on foot, with no problems.. Surely as with all GPS, once you start moving, it knows which direction you're going?

And as far as knowing which direction to start walking, are people really that stupid that they cant follow the actual map on the screen for a second?

May I recommend: http://amzn.com/B000FEUCRW

(Howcome the Fins get it right time after time)

It has the additional benefit of never needing to be charged and having the correct firmware 100% of the time. Oh, and dropping it into the water from my kayak never hurt...

Nice review, btw. Whets the appetite...

When you begin moving, GPS fixes and orientates you to your relative direction and you than have orientation on the map. Why would a compass be so critical for travel on a road? Did not impede travel before it was in phones a few years ago. I have had my G1 for 13 months and used the compass once out of curiosity, but do use GPS all the time.

I prefer a real compass for landnav. In the Marines, if I pulled out my G1 for map checks I would be shot on site ;)

Well, when I was in the Marines, all we had were real compasses.

Compass is "only" ( mind you, very important in the future, hopefully!) really useful for Augmented Reality...

I thought it was a decent review. I enjoyed the optimism. Sometimes I just get bummed out by all the negative reviews out there; it seems everyone has one or other to nit pick on the device about. I really did like the rotating picture though. It was nice to get some good angle views of the device. Very cool.

Also the fact that reality is in the mind of the beholder ;)

Must be summat wierd about me. I don't need a compass. I have one in my head. Whether I auto-deduce from the sun position or what, I'm not sure, but that's really, really not a problem for me.

Another review by Tweakers.net:

Nokia N900: Linux-bak op zakformaat (NL)
Nokia N900: Linux-box in pocket format (EN) (uses Google Translate)

Not much, if any, news in the review although it is becoming apparent experience-based opinions about specific aspects of product not only differ a little bit. Sometimes, they vary a lot, even contradicting at times.

Examples include keyboard, battery life, performance, ...
