So let me correct my original assessment. The last time I checked, a GPS would not work more than "2 to 3 meters from a window" whereas a magnetometer would probably work fine in a fallout shelter. It also would not work when the user is not moving whereas a magnetometer would. Would that assessment please people more? :)

The bottom line is that the n900 does not have a magnetometer and a GPS can not fully replace its functionality. Is that a deal breaker? Probably not for some people. But it's still a fact.

I don't consider it a dealbreacker for navigation.

Note that GPS doesn't work in indoors and in fact shouldn't, since it will be most probably getting non accurate positioning. Why a compass is then useful without GPS is over me.

You make me feel I'm lucky that I made my trip safely, since during my eurotrip in summer, all I had was 5800XM and Garmin Mobile XT with euro maps. Didn't know that magnetometer is that important for gps usage.

It's not "that important", but it's still useful.

GPS is not all that important if you got a good map with some planning done, it's merely useful at times.

BTW, N900 doesn't even have Garmin Mobile XT or TomTom. Now that IS a deal breaker for me. I am waiting for a good review of maemo mapper on n900, doesn't look promising right now.

"and we can confidently say theinternet browser is the best of its kind we have ever seen on a mobile device."
-> And they talked about the built in browser, not fennec. When Fennec will be out of beta & Flash 10 for ARM's will be out and included, everything'll get even better and smoother. :)

because the combination of compass and accelerometer can be used to provide inertial navigation for precisely the times when GPS isn't available, just like missiles do.

Thread Police Alert!

Can we talk about more than the compass? Opinion lines have been drawn in the sand and only an invading alien army will change everyone's perspective.

Keyboard has me a little bugged- seems like not enough space from the case and the top row. Would seem a problem for long-term texting or gaming- especially if you have big meaty paws.
