Bad news: This review will make you want the N900 more

Gonna be a long several weeks, but better to get some more bugs cleaned out before shipping.

Some of the comments of the pre-review must be from iPhone lovers.

positive review. it was interesting that the reviewer didn't have one gripe about the N900 :)

a review of the GPS would not have been encouraging.

This review showed me exactly what I wanted to see: how the still camera performs. And I must admit that I was satisfied with the N900's pic samples, despite they were made by a proto unit!

My earlier doubts about weak camera performance have been completly erased by now.

Picture quality seems to have improved helluva lot since early september when I tried N900 in Helsinki Flagshipstore.

1. I was blown away that the 360 Flash demo worked well for them
2. Plays divx and xvid without conversion

Portrait mode for most apps and texting and I will be completely happy :)

Do you mean because this is the weakest part of the device and that's why almost all reviews completely avoid it?

yes. Perhaps the avoidance is due to the fact that there are so many other new features to talk about that GPS is considered to be alive and working

I haven't gotten a gps fix in a while. there are bugs out there already so there is hope that those will be resolved soon.

The only thing I'm really worried about is the hardware. I'm thinking any software issues will be fixed through upgrades, so I'm not that much worried about small bugs upon release (if they're small that is).

one more main hardware is missing the diigital compass is not available on n900 so if u r thinking of using it as navigation system then this is not for you i have also cancelled my order and now ordered HTC HD2

It all started with the Nokia N770, forefather of the manufacturer´s lineup of internet tablets, a little over 4 years ago.
Good preview; however there was never a Nokia N770, it was just a Nokia 770. No N designation.

Sorry to nitpick though.

Oh id love to see some more information of the Sat Nav capability and while a digital compas would have been cool. Ive just Tom Tom on an Axim without a digital compas loads, at least 50% on foot. Ok you need to get your first bearing set. Walk in one direction and it'll pick it up. Yeah not 100% perfect but not the sole reason to dump a device.

If some one has a unit. I would really love some more info on the GPS and navifgation side. Its been badly lacking from reviews.

Still ive bought one, so no matter what i'll find out soon(ish http://talk.maemo.org/images/smilies/smile.gif) enough

If I recall right, that's the only thing that's missing on the N900 compared to the HD2 (which on the other side lacks stereo speakers, an IR-port, true multi-tasking, a high quality camera and a bunch more features). And the funniest thing about this is that the HTC HD2 still is more expensive than the N900!

So it's true after all that it's smart to be well informed!

Re: Bad news: This review will make you want the N900 more

I'm confused at all this hype about a digital compass... I used garmin on an n95 to get somewhere on foot, with no problems.. Surely as with all GPS, once you start moving, it knows which direction you're going?

And as far as knowing which direction to start walking, are people really that stupid that they cant follow the actual map on the screen for a second?

May I recommend: http://amzn.com/B000FEUCRW

(Howcome the Fins get it right time after time)

It has the additional benefit of never needing to be charged and having the correct firmware 100% of the time. Oh, and dropping it into the water from my kayak never hurt...

Nice review, btw. Whets the appetite...

Rushmore 2009-10-24 14:31

Re: Bad news: This review will make you want the N900 more

When you begin moving, GPS fixes and orientates you to your relative direction and you than have orientation on the map. Why would a compass be so critical for travel on a road? Did not impede travel before it was in phones a few years ago. I have had my G1 for 13 months and used the compass once out of curiosity, but do use GPS all the time.

I prefer a real compass for landnav. In the Marines, if I pulled out my G1 for map checks I would be shot on site ;)

Well, when I was in the Marines, all we had were real compasses.

Compass is "only" ( mind you, very important in the future, hopefully!) really useful for Augmented Reality...

I thought it was a decent review. I enjoyed the optimism. Sometimes I just get bummed out by all the negative reviews out there; it seems everyone has one or other to nit pick on the device about. I really did like the rotating picture though. It was nice to get some good angle views of the device. Very cool.

Must be summat wierd about me. I don't need a compass. I have one in my head. Whether I auto-deduce from the sun position or what, I'm not sure, but that's really, really not a problem for me.

Another review by Tweakers.net:

Nokia N900: Linux-bak op zakformaat (NL)
Nokia N900: Linux-box in pocket format (EN) (uses Google Translate)

Not much, if any, news in the review although it is becoming apparent experience-based opinions about specific aspects of product not only differ a little bit. Sometimes, they vary a lot, even contradicting at times.

Examples include keyboard, battery life, performance, ...

i never said that n900 is not a good phone but for those who r buying this as a gps those should not buy this because the compass is missing . i too love n900 but it is not made for me i will wait for n950 and i hope n950 will be the market leader like n95

I dont see the big deal with the compas.

It is not necessary. So long as there is voice guided nav soon, the compas is just show off toy type tool.

You shold be able to tell e-w-n-s with vision of the sky and shadows.

It isn't meant to be a good phone. GSM/voice/phone is not its primary purpose; its one of the many features which is why the term smartphone is misleading.

Furthermore, GPS is a technology not a target purpose. Navigation is a target purpose.

Many electronic navigation systems don't have a digital compass. Most TTom products don't have one, yet TToms sell like cupcakes, and arguably worked and work quite well 'even' without digital compass. If a digital compass is a requirement for a good functioning electronic navigation system we'd have seen all major electronic navigation system manufacturers use this technology, or their products would not sell, or only with many complaints. Fortunately, such is not the case.

Digital compass is mostly interesting for augmented reality but there are currently not many applications using this as target purpose. Eventually, this will change, given digital compass new thing, this is also a chicken/egg problem.

Except for the fact that several reviews have already said that even without the digital compass the GPS is capable of figuring out what direction you are heading within only a few steps. Which means the lack of a digital compass it is a very stupid reason to cancel the n900. Oh well more for the rest of us - *stewie voice on* Have fun with that hot ... hot ... windows mobile" *stewie voice off*

Yep. GPS orientates to you and your direction.

I used my digital compass one time in the thirteen months I have had the G1, but use GPS a lot.

Buy a real compass, they work better and are not biased by other internal electronics like phone ones are. Landnav course plus phone compass equals two miles off from planned destination ;)
