Re: Nokia N900 Vs XPPHONE...Why N900?
I read the engadget article on it and read some comments, ( so funny how ppl come after each other on there ) It looks nice and specs look even better on paper but, "it is very big" and xp isn't as enticing as one would think it to be, not only to the mass market but the sophistacated tech crowd as well. I would only hope if it is "real" and has great hardware that they at least roll out some version of 7 because you cant live of xp when we have all moved on since then ( I liked it but lets give the ppl "all" of what they want not just exceptional hardware with lagging software... in so many words) .

Out of curiosity i wanted to know if there is any mobile which has winxp as OS and doesnt scale well? Slow processor - Standard Specification(Configuration) *CPU: AMD Super Mobile CPU small memory - * Memory:512M/1G small screen - LCD: 4.8' TFT Touch-screen LCD 800*480 no optimization or hack could make xp usable - Why do we need hack where we can install everything normally. Even firefox ,VLC player.. for instance. * SSD: 8G/16G/32G/64G * HDD:30G/60G/80G/120G power frugal - Battery: Removable Lithium-ion Talk time: about 5 hours,Stand by time: about 5 days Real life: about 7 hours(Standard), about 12 hours(Large) I doubt how many users has read complete specs before posting. I think just by seeing Windows OS most people might got panic. :) Quote:
I have seen a mobiles with GSM+CDMA on single device which could make us to take anywhere in the world with out problem. I would like to see N900 in the same pattern :D |
Re: Nokia N900 Vs XPPHONE...Why N900?
Just a note on battery life - this is a hybrid device, a winxp MID that has a separate phone module slapped on it. The talk/standby times are for the PHONE module. The same battery, when used with the x86 will yield significantly less time. And I'm not too sure about the AMD CPU, I just hope it's not really a Geode :)

Re: Nokia N900 Vs XPPHONE...Why N900?
I agree on the battery life, the numbers are misleading. OTOH, I disagree with the comments on Windows. I am running Win7 with a 3G (EVDO) connection to Sprint on an OQO which is similarly sized. Browsing with the full Firefox browser (with add-ons including Flash and Shockwave) is faster than my N810 (although not as fast as my desktop). It certainly isn't unusable. While I don't use it as a phone it will also handle Skype.
My concern with the xpPhone are several. First the specs I have seen on the CPU are sketchy. AMD Super Mobile CPU is a description, not an AMD product name. Second, while I could handle the size, it is going to be very heavy for a phone. My OQO weighs about the same and it is a noticeable weight (although doable). If I was using it heavily as a phone, I would want a bluetooth headset. I would definitely order the 1GB memory if it is available, 512MB of memory is too small. For XP or Win7 you really need 1GB. Without more memory, I would pass. |
Re: Nokia N900 Vs XPPHONE...Why N900?
but who cares (about battery life)!?
xp trumps maemo wow is now EVERYWHERE, aoe, good god, i can't even comprehend shrinking everything i have on this same comp (it's xp) onto something like that |

Despite this, Windows XP was not designed for such small screens,it will be horrible to navigate! I would imagine you would have to have an anti virus and other security crud constantly wasting your battery... |

I would guess that this is a reference model (also known as an OEM model). The company behind it has got the design and will sell/license it to someone else for production. This is why there seem to be so many options. The company is not offering them to the consumer, they are offering them to a potential manufacturer. You see this a lot in UMPCs. |
