Hi Guys,

After looking ths specs i feel its better than N900. http://www.xpphone.com/en/product/configuration.html Phone Functions http://www.xpphone.com/en/product/functions.html 9 Major Techs. http://www.xpphone.com/en/product/technologies.html Youtube Video Link prototype http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxeHCQ4nlX8 Link from gsmarean about specs http://www.gsmarena.com/itg_xpphone_...-news-1130.php Only downside i see is its weight 400gms (OMG!!! Re: Nokia N900 Vs XPPHONE...Why N900?
That xpPhone looks pretty huge, and how's it's battery life? I won't even get into how usabale xp will be on a 4.8" screen: That's personal preference I guess. If it suits your needs, then go for it, but it looks closer in size to an MID then what I really think of as a "phone."

May be if they reduce the size then it may give good competion to N900. |

Re: Nokia N900 Vs XPPHONE...Why N900?
Not going into the whole linux vs windows debate, Windows XP simply doesn't scale well down. Slow processor, small memory, small screen and no optimization or hack could make xp usable and power frugal.

Re: Nokia N900 Vs XPPHONE...Why N900?
Maybe i'm just compulsively pessimistic, but i don't think such a phone will come around too soon, and even if it does, it will probably be crap. Why? Well:
* not only is it a chinese company (yes, i know everything is made in china today, but it's important who oversees the process), but it's also one of those companies that can't afford a fully-functional site (browse around, see the empty sections), and also has it mixed with the chinese version * no serious announcement : no details about when it may be released, how much it will cost, no hard anything; they're just a bunch of guys hoping to be able to do it * too good to be true; yes, there is such a thing in the real world, even if it is physically possible to cram that much technology in there, it should either cost close to 1000 euros or be crappy |
Re: Nokia N900 Vs XPPHONE...Why N900?
i think if there was actually going to be something that is supposed to compete in the mid area w/n900 and it was windows...it would have to be arouind the 7.
Definately not xp. |
Re: Nokia N900 Vs XPPHONE...Why N900?
Win OS?
Oh! please! no more windows os in my life! |

Re: Nokia N900 Vs XPPHONE...Why N900?
I read the engadget article on it and read some comments, ( so funny how ppl come after each other on there ) It looks nice and specs look even better on paper but, "it is very big" and xp isn't as enticing as one would think it to be, not only to the mass market but the sophistacated tech crowd as well. I would only hope if it is "real" and has great hardware that they at least roll out some version of 7 because you cant live of xp when we have all moved on since then ( I liked it but lets give the ppl "all" of what they want not just exceptional hardware with lagging software... in so many words) .

Out of curiosity i wanted to know if there is any mobile which has winxp as OS and doesnt scale well? Slow processor - Standard Specification(Configuration) *CPU: AMD Super Mobile CPU small memory - * Memory:512M/1G small screen - LCD: 4.8' TFT Touch-screen LCD 800*480 no optimization or hack could make xp usable - Why do we need hack where we can install everything normally. Even firefox ,VLC player.. for instance. * SSD: 8G/16G/32G/64G * HDD:30G/60G/80G/120G power frugal - Battery: Removable Lithium-ion Talk time: about 5 hours,Stand by time: about 5 days Real life: about 7 hours(Standard), about 12 hours(Large) I doubt how many users has read complete specs before posting. I think just by seeing Windows OS most people might got panic. :) Quote:
I have seen a mobiles with GSM+CDMA on single device which could make us to take anywhere in the world with out problem. I would like to see N900 in the same pattern :D |
Re: Nokia N900 Vs XPPHONE...Why N900?
Just a note on battery life - this is a hybrid device, a winxp MID that has a separate phone module slapped on it. The talk/standby times are for the PHONE module. The same battery, when used with the x86 will yield significantly less time. And I'm not too sure about the AMD CPU, I just hope it's not really a Geode :)

Re: Nokia N900 Vs XPPHONE...Why N900?
I agree on the battery life, the numbers are misleading. OTOH, I disagree with the comments on Windows. I am running Win7 with a 3G (EVDO) connection to Sprint on an OQO which is similarly sized. Browsing with the full Firefox browser (with add-ons including Flash and Shockwave) is faster than my N810 (although not as fast as my desktop). It certainly isn't unusable. While I don't use it as a phone it will also handle Skype.
My concern with the xpPhone are several. First the specs I have seen on the CPU are sketchy. AMD Super Mobile CPU is a description, not an AMD product name. Second, while I could handle the size, it is going to be very heavy for a phone. My OQO weighs about the same and it is a noticeable weight (although doable). If I was using it heavily as a phone, I would want a bluetooth headset. I would definitely order the 1GB memory if it is available, 512MB of memory is too small. For XP or Win7 you really need 1GB. Without more memory, I would pass. |
Re: Nokia N900 Vs XPPHONE...Why N900?
but who cares (about battery life)!?
xp trumps maemo wow is now EVERYWHERE, aoe, good god, i can't even comprehend shrinking everything i have on this same comp (it's xp) onto something like that |

Despite this, Windows XP was not designed for such small screens,it will be horrible to navigate! I would imagine you would have to have an anti virus and other security crud constantly wasting your battery... |

they've also posted updates for this phone on engadget, it apparently supports windows 7 (lol at identity crisis) and comes with screens upto 7" |
Re: Nokia N900 Vs XPPHONE...Why N900?

I would guess that this is a reference model (also known as an OEM model). The company behind it has got the design and will sell/license it to someone else for production. This is why there seem to be so many options. The company is not offering them to the consumer, they are offering them to a potential manufacturer. You see this a lot in UMPCs. |
Re: Nokia N900 Vs XPPHONE...Why N900?
No video recorder?? No thanks!

Re: Nokia N900 Vs XPPHONE...Why N900?
Done with Win OS. Maemo bought my heart.

Re: Nokia N900 Vs XPPHONE...Why N900?
Why N900?
Because XPPHONE runs on WIndows XP*. *As much as I hate the "enough said" internet idiom, that is truly enough said. |
Re: Nokia N900 Vs XPPHONE...Why N900?
Not my thing at all. I'm like a boy in a candy shop with these new mobile operating systems(OSX, Maemo 5, WebOS and Android) that are build for the mobile use rather than XP or Windows 7.
I have owned N800 and while i liked it i'm all about one device that will make it all and for me that is a mobile phone so i was more than happy when early this year rumours started spreading about the Fremantle and the first device being a phone. Because that's exactly what i have been looking for. This is just one of those many devices that will pop-up or most likely it wont come out at all and if does it's just not usable and most probally will lack support because 20 people besides you bought it. I have learned some time ago being a gadget addict that sum of the features don't yet make the device, not even close. |
Re: Nokia N900 Vs XPPHONE...Why N900?
I saw it. So embarassingly ugly - like some trinket at a taiwanese village market.

If the XPphone had a variant with:
Then I'd be interested. But, with XP and Windows 7 as the OS choices? Sorry, I have self respect, and standards. Those rule out such a device. (* On the move, I'm not sure if I'd primarily use Android or Maemo, sleeping the other until I need something specific ... but I'm sure I'd only really use Ubuntu when I dock it to a KVM switch -- sort of my pocketable nettop; of course, realistically, even if the rest of this device variant was available, Maemo wouldn't be, so it'd probably be VMWare + Android running most of the time, and waking up Ubuntu as needed) |
Re: Nokia N900 Vs XPPHONE...Why N900?
nice, im sure all those with preorders on that cant wait to get infected with **** loads of viruses and malware. just think of the crappy performance too, especially when having to run full blown av software to avoid the affore mentioned issue. dont get me wrong, id love an x86 based phone i really would but i dont think we're quite there yet with power cosumption vs performance. look at net books, they're not exactly blisteringly fast and we all know how windows likes to have a spazz attack every so offen and spend ten years having a think about opening internet explorer. i think its a nice idea but i think we're a little way off it being a practical reality.
