Re: VLC Player Officially coming

Thanks, but Oops - it will take about 10 MB of the rare rootfs.
Can anyone tell me how I can remove the packages completly??

Thanks in advance
Dirk

Problem solved - the installed modified-hildon-desktop caused problems while installing the CSSU - after deinstalling I was able to deinstall vlc package by package ...

Install vlc-player_1.1.5-1

Copy all files here http://whoknowsmy.name/stuff/vlc/ in some folder on you phone and cd to it.
Then run xterminal with root
Code:

dpkg -i *vlc*.deb
and you have it ;)

How much better is this version over the existing one? Any improvements in performance/stability?

Thanks

@ bchliu

Main issues are :

- Takes 10Mb of rootfs
- CPU always on 100%

I was thinking of building 1.1.7, but I get this:

I think the ported Rockplayer plays a lot of files IIRC. Might try that out.

Kmplayer with mplayer is probably the best stable solution.

huh? Did they port Rockplayer across to the N900? or are you talking about using it NITDROID?

Thanks

Nevermind. What I'm talking about is rockbox. For a moment I thought it was Rockplayer.

All apologies for getting anyone excited.:(

Hi! If all those are within the new version of VLC player then why release it here? Nobody would want a movie player which hogs up CPU and take up rootfs :(

Re: VLC Player Officially coming

mplayer seems to play everything thrown at it, provided you set some flags in config.

VLC works brilliantly on dedicated machines and that's where I'll use it.

Which flags are those?
I found that on some files, mkv, or some mp4 varieties, the image does play on mplayer, but in slow-motion.

yes, however a quick resize/conversion cures that. this link may help you!

http://wiki.maemo.org/Video_encoding

the slow motion tends to happen when the resoltuion is higher than the N900's. it struggles to scale it via the media players.

sure, VLC would be great on the N900 but I have found that mplayer + KMplayer play everything I need. just needs some conversion sometimes :)

Re: VLC Player Officially coming

Of course, but encoding is exactly what I am trying to avoid (it is never 'quick' for me)...even the Nokia 5800 can play everything, as long as you convert to nHD MP4.

You are probably right about the slow-motion. I was hoping I could switch to some usable frame-skipping, or set it to a slightly lower quality; not ideal, but better than what it does now.

only if VLC was availble, stable and not a hog I'd instal it now! sadly I do spend some time reszing large files to play on the N900 but not that much.....

i think its a great device for media, if you can be arsed tweaking and playing about!

why we cant just do like in ubuntu:
sudo apt-get remove mplayer
sudo apt-get install vlc

it would be so nice without playin hours by resizing and others. bored to those. wait till it comes in REALLY good quality
