Not sure if this is the best place to put this but what the hell...

Tried installing VLC from Qole's repository apt-get install vlc. Downloaded a playlist from TVCatchup then ran it with VLC immediately.. heres the terminal dump..
The first frame displays and freezes. I have to close it myself then type quit to return to the terminal.

Code:

If you guys need a player for now just use mplayer and sib.. It plays all file types and is very comfortable to use.

Already using KMPlayer for the majority of my media. Unfortunately it cannot handle .m3u8 streams for iPhone. It buffers then gives up. So far hls-player seems to be the only solution, but once VLC is optimised for N900 then the choice is clear. Just posting the terminal information in case it is of use.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of files I have that don't play very well under mplayer. Fact is, I have yet to find a video player that just works.

There are no news which are old. So the question should be "any news here".

Not really an installable as its a bit of an Alpha release but here is the dev page

http://www.remlab.net/files/vlc/fremantle/

You need to install these files
libvlc5_1.1.0~git5935-1_armel.deb vlc-nox_1.1.0~git5935-1_armel.deb
vlc-player-nox_1.1.0~git5935-1_armel.deb
vlc-player_1.1.0~git5935-1_armel.deb

There all .debs so just download them to the n900. Default is /home/user/MyDocs

Then run
Code:

dpkg -i /path to file/filename.deb
You will have to do this in order the lib first then vlc-nox, player-nox, player.

When you have Vlc installed simply run

vlc /path to file

ie
vlc /home/user/MyDocs/test.avi

If you are feeling really adventurous you could try dbus-switchboard that qole is developing to handle certain files by vlc automatically.

All usual warnings apply for using Alpha software. It can/will be buggy and very hard to uninstall.:)

There is also a download page on the videolan FTP server:

http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/maemo/vlc/

The files are recent (June 6) and I installed this version, but I don't know if it is any better than the one listed by casper27.

have to install player-nox before vlc-nox
except this part everything's working soooo smoothly :D

Re: VLC Player Officially coming

The version found on the ftp link provided by qole (The Luggage) does have a buggy gui, but RTSP support is broken.
I have reverted back to the version on Qole's repository (Yellow Bastard) and TVCatchup streams are working again

Any news of when they will officially package it properly and optify it? Can you manually optify it at this stage? I am dying for this app since I first got my N900 3 months ago..

Thanks

You can also use it as a source for the N900's package manager.
It's a version with GUI and plays a h264 720p rip from youtube just fine.

Re: VLC Player Officially coming

Wow.. after adding that repo in (its actually http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/maemo/) managed to grab it.

The GUI works, but only launchable from Xterm using vlc command (the icon clears the screen and doesnt do much). Noticed too that its Optified (player and libraries) and didnt use any of my precious root.

Not bad for an alpha. But seems to struggle with larger files. Does seem to play the formats and it does utilise some hardware acceleration via the DSP and Video processors.

Comparing it to MPlayer, its way more smoother and less need to overclock the CPU to get the performance.

Cant wait for the further progress.. if they can fix and optimise it more, then its a killer product for sure!

Re: VLC Player Officially coming

been using vlc for sometime (non gui version) with tvcatchup as helped by darkgunman from here and around other web forums ! (he gets around....slut) and all has been working well for me.

I've used it mainly for tvcatchup.com streams for watching TV @ work or around and about.

Hope the devel process continues pretty solid piece of kit from the VLC players ive used before.

qole 2010-06-24 17:26

Re: VLC Player Officially coming

Relax, people. Both versions of VLC are optified.

The reason why it doesn't work is because some of the symbolic links point to the icons in their optified locations that quite frankly don't exist, and when you try to start VLC you apparently click through the non-existant icon to the desktop. (Every time I tried it opened my RSS feeds...)

To fix this annoying issue, you need to remove the symbolic links for these files with root privledges, namely:
Code:

rm /usr/share/icons/hicolor/16x16/hildon/vlc.png
rm /usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/hildon/vlc.png
rm /usr/share/icons/hicolor/128x128/hildon/vlc.png

and give your device a reboot so it can find the icon.
