Moto amp

MOTO, which is not Motorola, has, "available now", a rather interesting device. Highlights:

OMAP 3430, 256MB RAM, 5" OLED, USB OTG, compass, 3 axis accelerometer, wifi g,b,n, 720p out via HDMI, preloaded with Linux 2.6.27 (they don't say which distro) or Android.

147x100x14mm.

No keyboard.

It is one of three devices, the other 2 are not available yet, but have different screen sizes (one at 3.5 the other at 10), different processors (all OMAP), and more RAM (up to a 1 Gig on the 10 inch).

Oh yes, 3G radio is an option.

What say you all?

Shooting from the hip here, but I'd go with this:

Meh

Re: Moto amp

Smallest one has strange specs: 8 megapixel front facing camera and no camera at back.:confused::confused::confused:

The biggest one looks like one helluva tablet. 10", OMAP4, 1gig memory and 8000mAh battery.

Looks pretty for now, but i'm sure by 2011 it'll be smashed by competitors. That's if it launches then or even at all

EDIT: apparently it's a platform, not an end-user device. Of course, these will come too, but even later

Yes, seems as if it's platform, available now to developers who are trying to get things out by 2011, not available in 2011....was/is my understanding..

I said "highlights", not complete specs :p .No idea on the internal USB. It kind of reminds me of the Gumxstix based Flow (www.gizmoforyou.com) .I'm going to contact them and see what the story is.

Well, the interesting part to me is...capacitive multi-touch + pen digitizer. Of course, there is no word on when that one will be available, anyone know when the A9s ship?

Sort of. But not developers in the sense of anyone in the Maemo community. In the MID, UMPC, Netbook world, you see what are termed "reference devices" or "reference designs". They are produced by companies like MOTO who are looking for companies who want to have MOTO develop a device based on the reference design, slap the company's logo on it, and manufacture it. The company would then try to sell it as if it were their own.

Note that if you do have a few million dollars in your back pocket, MOTO would be glad to modify the reference design to address the shortcomings people are pointing out. :D

And if I handed you a million, your list would be?

Has anyone checked out what there development kit cost. It sounds like a beagle board with a screen so I'd guess $300

Re: Moto amp

no prices on the page that i could find, so unless someone takes the time to write a email...

I sent an email, I'll post what response I get...

Re: Moto amp

I got impatient, so I called (their San Francisco office), the nice lady who picked up the phone had no idea, what so ever, what I was talking about. I directed her to their webpage, and she said, ah...let me see if I can get some information and get back to you....I await her return call.

iamNarada 2009-11-06 20:38

Re: Moto amp

Well, at least they're quick on responses, the call back says...there is one device, a prototype, which one might procure for an "exorbitant fee" (her words not mine). Move along, nothing to see here.

*SWOON*

I'm in love with the 10" one. I want. Hope I don't really have to wait til 2011 for it, though.

The only things that would make me happier with it would be a PixelQi display, DVI-I instead of HDMI, and Maemo.

I can tell you what my ideal mid-range device would be. Just recently posted it on my blog. The MOTO AMP 10 seems to come pretty close to it...

Wow that came out of nowhere. Liking that AMP 3.5"alot.

And like already said what's up with that "Front – 8 Mpixe camera". Typo?

Yeah, I'm waiting for PixelQi stuff to come out, should start seeing stuff end of this year, early next. And I think since you can put linux on it, you should be able to put Maemo. Any particular reason for the DVI-I instead of HDMI, I'm completely ignorant with respect to the comparative pros/cons of each.

Not without a license from Nokia...

HDMI and DVI-D are digital only. In the long run, that's the goal, but in the near term, there's still analog things to deal with (export to non-digital projectors, VGA monitors, etc.). DVI-I is able to use adaptors that work with analog TV's, analog projectors, VGA monitors, DVI monitors, HDMI monitors, digital TVs, and digital projectors. DVI-D and HDMI can only (cheaply) work with DVI monitors, HDMI monitors, digital projectors and digital TVs.

Basically, DVI-I provides the greatest flexibility.
