Nokia N900 in Canada (Montreal)
Hey,
I would like to get the Nokia N900 in Montreal, Canada. I currently use Fido. 1. Will it work using Fido? 2. Can I use EDGE if 3G does not work? The specs list Optimized for WCDMA 900/1700/2100 Quad-band EGSM 850/900/1800/1900 Optimized for 3G networks on WCDMA 900/1700/2100 Quad-band EGSM 850/900/1800/1900 3. Is there going to be different models or just one model that supports all those frequencies? 4. Where can I buy it and have it shipped here? |

Re: Nokia N900 in Canada (Montreal)
From first hand experience:
1. Yes it 'works' using Fido 2. Yes, you can use EDGE if 3G does not work. in fact, you are encouraged to do so, presently ;) 3. Currently only one model. 4. Don't know Videotron will probably be a great choice for you, once their cell network goes live. It will be using the AWS frequencies from their auction win last year. If you hold out until they launch, you'll probably be very very happy! |
Re: Nokia N900 in Canada (Montreal)
Cant I use the HSPDA on the fido network?
Fido has a mobile 3g internet stick for laptops http://fido.ca/web/content/internet/...et_stick#start Cant the N900 connect to that network? |
Re: Nokia N900 in Canada (Montreal)
Not the same frequencies are being used...
We have to wait for Vidéotron next year! :-/ But then again, we have some wi-fi almost everywhere in the city ... |
Re: Nokia N900 in Canada (Montreal)
The strange thing is, someone keeps posting a N900 for sale on the Montreal Craigslist ("cell phone" section). While some aspects seem legit (wants to meet in person, with box, etc) the price ($360 Can) and the minor detail that it's not really out yet makes it smell strongly of scam. (C'mon, if this is a legit sale, the person would be aware of the various maemo talk sites and post here...)
I don't have money to blow on a real or fake N900 so I'm not going to sniff that particular bait - if someone else is more adventurous, they can follow up on that. |

Re: Nokia N900 in Canada (Montreal)
Well people I can shed some light on the Craigslist ad.
It's a SCAM for sure. The person also advertises' Apple iPhones, Blackberry's etc. Although they write 'you can come over to my place', or 'insert SIM card and test phone' they will not let you do that. They then claim that they use to have an 'electronic store' and have extra inventory they need to sell! They also say they are located in Winnipeg and asks you to pay the delivery company COD! They have ads all over cities in Canada with similar deals on Craigslist. If it's to good to be true then it's a scam for sure. Who's the dumb one here? The buyer or seller? Answer = Both !! |
