Hey all, not sure if anyone's tried this but if you set midori to identify as iphone you can access the special bbc site. Couldn't test yet as I'm not near to wifi and even though I am with vodafone it doesn't identify as such. I'll check when I get home if nobody else has been able to (and anyone's interested :D)

So, As they seem to have apps for pretty much all other N series phone. Hopefully they will consider the N900.

Fingers crossed.

It is strange how the phone can handle high quality videos ( downloaded ) however can handle a few mbit stream from wireless.

Perhaps you could provide the contact you used at the BBC - or at least which page you got it from? Maybe if a whole bunch of us email, it will increase their interest.

hehe, Im pretty sure that they will make an app eventually ( or we will come up with a work around )

It would however be nice if Nokia / Maemo could just fix / tweak the OS to let it work natively otherwise it will always feel like some kind of bodge job on such a good phone thats apparently quite powerful , But evidently isnt when it comes to any kind of streaming of any half decent bitrate.

Thank you for contacting the BBC iPlayer support team.

I understand that you'd like to know when BBC iPlayer will be available for the Nokia N900.

We appreciate the anticipation with regard to iPlayer content being available for this device, however we've not tested the product as yet and can't guarantee if and when this will happen.

Lol, typical aye.

Maybe some more people should contact them :)
It might make them think about buying one. ( or just run the OS in vbox? ) to test.

YES should be. The phone does not need any programmes/applications to run it just the flash update.

Sometime this year. Flash 10 has already been demonstrated by Adobe on the N900 so it can't be far away.

Re: BBC IPlayer on the N900 - A different approach

Live streams of BBC TV channels are available at these URLs:
BBC1: rtsp://212.58.251.101:554/bbc-rbs/rm...bbc_one_london
BBC2: rtsp://212.58.251.101:554/bbc-rbs/rm...bc_two_england
BBC3: rtsp://212.58.251.101:554/bbc-rbs/rm...e_id=bbc_three
BBC4: rtsp://212.58.251.101:554/bbc-rbs/rm...ce_id=bbc_four
CBBC: rtsp://212.58.251.101:554/bbc-rbs/rm...ervice_id=cbbc
Cbeebies: rtsp://212.58.251.101:554/bbc-rbs/rm...ce_id=cbeebies
BBC News 24: rtsp://212.58.251.101:554/farm/rmliv..._id=bbc_news24

Click the link and it should open in the Media player. However, sometimes it stops (and apparently switches to audio mode) soon after starting. To avoid that, click the "+" button on the screen when it is still connecting. Then you can create a "video bookmark" in Media player's Video folder, and that does not seem to have the same problem.

These are the streams used by http://www.bbc.co.uk/mobile/live/tv/. The resolution is poor, but the streams work well even over the mobile network (at least Vodafone).

Of course, you need a TV licence to watch these, and probably also to be in the UK.

I don't suppose you can post the details that you used to write to them so others can ask as well to maybe highlight that a lot of people would like to be able to use this device? If they have a debian basic version then it might be a fairly simple port over to get at least a version working.

Unfortunately the desktop version (Windows and Linux) is powered by Adobe Air, so you'd need an ARM port of that first (which doesn't look to be available).

Re: BBC IPlayer on the N900 - A different approach

I tried to contact the beeb about providing n800 compatible streams or even an iplayer page (they could have based it on the wii or ps3 page and used lower-quality flash streams), and didn't get a response. I suspect they rely on a member of staff to have a example device for testing if the beeb don't see a big user base for it.

Re: BBC IPlayer on the N900 - A different approach

I love BBC Radio and I have been searching for the url address' for the radio streams since I got my N900. I only got it last week, so it has not been that long a search :-). Anyway I found this site which is aimed at iPhones:

http://bbcstreams.com/

I have added the links on there to mplayer and they have been working perfectly. I should point out that I have installed the extra codecs and so they may be needed, or maybe not. I'm sure a clever person here could confirm.

Cheers

Hi Berty, sorry your having a problem.

I have been listening to radio 2 most of the morning and even tried roaming between my 2 WiFi networks. On the whole it has been good and apart from some buffering as it changes networks. At one point Mplayer stopped responding, not sure why, and I had to reboot to clear. All has been finr since.

I have also tried streaming on Vodafone and that worked fine.

Have you got the extra-decoders installed? I am still unsure as to weather or not they are required, but they maybe worth a try if you do not have them. Maybe you could try a different network connection if you have not already done so.

Good luck

Cheers

You'll need to use a UK-based proxy. We have the same issue when trying to watch any of the content on US channels' websites.

If I find a proxy, how would I set it up to only work with bbc.co.uk?

if you use privoxy I think you can put in proxy chaining rules

what I have found also works is to set up a VPN to a server (openvpn with shared key is very easy) and set up your computer to route all traffic down the VPN; the server must have IP forwarding enabled permitting traffic origin to be (say) tun0, and masquerade on its main network port.

I managed to make my PS3 access Hulu using a server in the states, by redirecting its traffic down a VPN to the server, as well as using squid proxy on that state-side server with settings to mangle the user agent so that hulu wouldn't reject it.

I got VERY VERY tired of free VPN services not working. I finally caved in and set up a
VPN Television/StrongVPN account last week.

The basic package costs $55/year and allows you to choose between IP addresses in San Francisco, New York, and London. Setup on my iPhones and iPod touch was very simple, as was setup on my Mac. Once you set up your VPN account details on the iPhone, a VPN toggle appears in the Settings app, between the Wi-Fi and Carrier settings, allowing for quick enabling of the VPN service whenever you need it. So I now have access to Pandora on the iPhone (which is, in a word, AWESOME), Hulu at home (again, VERY cool) and also Google Voice. With my jailbroken iPhone running GV Mobile + and Skype, I'm now able to make outgoing calls to anywhere in the U.S. free of charge, no matter where I am.

So if anyone is on the fence about going the VPN route, after trying it out myself I can definitely say it's well worth the cost. Hulu and Pandora alone are worth more than $55/year to me (that's about how much a single month of cable costs!!) and the added bonus of being able to set up a Google Voice account is just icing on the cake. If anyone has any questions about how to set everything up, feel free to ask and I'll do my best to answer!

http://www.vpntelevision.com

Hope this helps!

The low bandwidth option has gone. The picture now lags way behind picture. BBC must have cottoned onto fact we were using a service that we already pay for figures cheers BBC

Re: BBC IPlayer on the N900 - A different approach

Actually casper27, the bigscreen option is meant for devices like the Wii or other media centers that output to TV's.
If you find the stream isn't adjusting to suit your environment, I suggest you contact the BBC rather than sniping here.

Whoa... easy tiger! i was the one that asked the question to see if anybody else was experiencing the same as myself. No sniping just a pleasant fact finding mission. If you don't mind, may i suggest that you please accept others posts, including my own for the context they were meant.

I've never had a problem with the iPlayer on mine, TV and radio seem fine. Helps the N900 has a vaguely up to date Flash player of course.

iplayer no longer plays smoothly since minor upgrade. Same is the case for BBC News live. Sound quality is still ok but pictures lag and is unwatchable. Has anyone else noticed this ?

the way i do it is:

Then it plays fine.

Many thanks that worked. Could you please check the playback of BBC News LIVE via flash. This used to play pretty smoothly but the picture now lags badly. Please let me know if you experience same lag and if so let me know of any workaround. thanks

could i have little help with get-iplayer?

I'd really like to be able to download programs to my phone and watch them with my desired player therefore being able to seek much easier than i can in a brower window. i have get-player through debian chroot, typed in get-iplayer and get a big list of progs. i am specifically after the last episode of dr who which is on the website but not in the list that get-player shows. i also went to the get-ilpayer page and found the prog index is 774 but typing get-player 774 in chroot return an error 'unmatched programme index'
