I got to play with one of the pre-production units today. I have a buddy that works in Nokia building 2 in Irving, Texas. They supposedly had several for quite a while now, but I only got to play with one. I love the maemo platform, and think it is much friendlier than the N810. I am probably the only person to say that I wish the N900 was bigger. The thickness does not really bother me, but I really liked the size of the N810. Seriously, are people's pockets so small?

Overall, the speed was decent, and the interface is nice. Not everything is obvious at the outset, unless you have watched some videos or read the manual. It just isn't as intuitive as the iphone, but comes close. "Rich functionality and ease of use are mutually exclusive." Video playback and image viewing was nice. I do think the phone will be a hit.

I am a bit worried about how durable it will be if dropped... My daughter dropped her N800 many many times, and it always survived. It seems as if this might crack the screen if dropped, as the metal band around the screen seems rather thin.

Did anyone ever see the difference between point versions of some of Nokia's phones? I have both an E61 and an E61i. There is a WORLD of difference between these two phones. The E61 is all plastic and easily cracked, and overall looks really cheap. The E61i is mostly metal and hard plastic and is really nice. I hate to say it, but the N900 kind of has more in common with the E61 than the E61i. This is just my first impression, sorry if I offend anyone.

It looks like this is to just fiddle with the OS. I want to hold the phone/tablet/whatever in the palm of my hands.

Did you have any issues with the keys on the top row? Do your fingers keep hitting the screen causing irritation/frustration?

No problem with the keys on the top row. I didn't type that much, but I didn't even notice the proximity. I will play with it again tomorrow and let you know. The guy is in my class, so he doesn't mind.
