N900 Apps

At the risk of being banned for starting this thread but here goes................

Would it be possible for experienced Maemo or N Series Gurus to either point us N Series Newbies to the best and SAFEST place to get Apps for our phones. When they arrive!! Or post links to them i here?

Just I've read all sorts of stuff about downloads and how it's not good for your phone on these pages. Such as this from the FM post.

oh kids, you should check out fmradio from extras-testing (when you know what you are doing, packages extras-testing have the potential to harm your device). "

And whats the difference between os 200* etc etc

Feel free to delete if you think I'm wasting everyones time.

Thanks TWU

http://maemo.nokia.com/maemo-select/applications/ is a complete copy of the downloads in http://maemo.org/downloads/Maemo5/. I actaully think it has every single file. Completely useless and a waste of time. Maemo select was suppose to have all the top files from OVI store and the community, every single file on the Maemo site happens to be a top one?

First off you don't get banned here unless you spam. Plenty of stupid questions are asked everyday, but don't worry your question isn't stupid. The place you want to get your applications from if you are scared of messing your phone up is the Ovi Store, The Official Nokia Repos, and Maemo Extras. If you don't want to take a chance in having to restore your phone don't get them from anywhere else. That being said there are a lot of good things is Maemo Extras-testing just make sure if you go digging around in there you know how to reflash your phone, incase something goes wrong. Once the apps are tested they will be pushed to Maemo Extra for everyone to enjoy. You can also download and install debs and install through xterm but you then again have a chance to screw something up. Here is a Little breakdown.

Newbie/Beginner/End User/Don't want to possibly break your phone.
  • Ovi Store
  • Official Nokia Repos
  • Maemo-Extras

Power User/Tester/Linux Guru/Doesn't mind reflashing phone if needed.
  • Maemo-Extras-testing
  • Other Repos
  • Download Debs from internet.

Developer
  • Maemo-Extras-Devel

I would substitute Extras-testing for Extras-devel in this list.

Surely the best way of getting apps for the N900 is just to browse the app manager on the device directly?

Some people don't like app manager since a lot of apps don't really give good description and no screenshot.

And you don't ever see the maemo Extras stuff in app manager unless you install at least once from the maemo.org/downloads/Maemo5

Maemo Extras Repo is there you just have to enable it you don't have to install anything from Downloads.

Select has 30 apps. Extras is around 50-ish now, so there IS some difference there, maybe it is top 30 (obviously will be more more interesting when we will have hundreds/thousands of apps in extras)
