So maybe this one should have been called the "Maemo 900".

The general public gets confused with overlapping or inconsistently-used names. I don't know what they'll make of Maemo 5, N900, Fremantle... (Rover, RX-51, and thank goodness OS-2009 is nixed...).

A common naming pattern for cars is Make, Model and Code (e.g. Toyota Corolla V3i). By analogy this could be the Nokia Maemo 900.

Roger

No, it would be Nokia N900 actually, the N denoting "N series".

Re: Could the next Maemo device please use a proper name? Please?

Nokia's phone model numbers are all over the place. I'm sure it makes sense to the insiders, but I still can't remember which phone is my 6300 and which is my 6230 (numbers made up because I can't even remember the numbers).

But what is the point of any system? Some people like them to have logic and a purpose - but the marketing people always seem to get their way and follow trends and whims - Microsoft Windows is a great example, IMHO.

So I hope Nokia either use a good name or start a simple numbering system for this new product line. Their problem is that they started from 900 (770 if you are a purist), so it's not easy to carry on.

Look at Saab. They had the 99, then the 900, then the 9000. (I think it was in that order). Daft.

Was reflecting: someone suggested that the n900 was a unicorn. Unless I'm mistaken, one of the major aspects of unicorns is that they hang around with virgins... though the mythology says nothing about basements. ;)

That's it, I'm out. Screw the N900, I don't understand it.

I'll wait for 2010, Nokia Charles.:)

I'll jump back on board n900 if it is released as the Unicorn !

Nokia constantly releases new devices. Thinking numbering them is the easiest way, can't be bothered to make up different names lol

The Blackberry right now is getting difficult with the Pearl, Flip, Storm, Bold etc. they couldn't come up with new names so now changing the ending number instead too lol

I actually like the way Nokia designated it's device "names" (aka , N900, N810, N800, N93, etc). You can quickly determine the device's major catagory/ series (N - series, etc) and it's it's hardware level and/or revision (900, 810, 800, etc).

Kind of reminds me of the Mercedes and BMW cars & how they are "named".

I myself prefer N900 to a proper name, but as long as it wouldnt be plastered on the front of the device, I wouldnt really care. (I hate names , icons , and logos on most things)
