xkcd #662, where's the N900?

Today's xkcd comic has one glaring omission, the Maemo platform. In the ensuing discussion though, it seems to be getting plenty of love. Fess up, who has posted in there already?

hard to talk about something that is not widely available...

specially since the north americans are getting bombarded by droid and iphonie ads...

if nokia doesnt step up the marketing game with n900 this phone will be remembered as "10 of the worst marketed best devices in history".

A fair point. I have yet to see the N900 mentioned anywhere offline.

This is getting ridiculous - xkcd is not a handset advertiser. Nobody knows what an N900 is and it's not even out yet!

Re: xkcd #662, where's the N900?

xkcd does generally play up its geeky in-the-know sort of image, so not even mentioning the N900 is a bit odd.

While you are, of course, correct, I would have expected at least some mention, especially considering the demographic and the image of xkcd.

Mind you, I'm biased.

The only way it could be mentioned in the context of the comic would be "Is there an N900 app for that? Oh wait there are no N900 apps". Application support is the N900s greatest weakness (as a new platform) so the last thing Nokia or an advocate of the device would want would be for it to be mentioned in that context.

Well actually in my head, I was hoping for something a little more like this: Attachment 4637

Re: xkcd #662, where's the N900?

On xkcd it could easily have been in the title text as
Quote:

"With an N900 you could be restlessly producing your own app. And your own kernel."
Or something. There's a reason I don't write a massively popular comic

It's almost as though Nokia is targeting their always-connected Internet device at users of the Internet. Wacky.

Sarcasm noted - and I sort of deserved it - but you don't just hear about stuff online. TV/Press/Billboards; the traditional media are the ones that have the big reach in forming opinions. I know that won't always be the case, or even for very much longer, but the *only* place I have seen or heard the N900 mentioned in any sort of official capacity is online.

not biased at all..
here in finland the n900 was referred as "iphone killer" by the newspaper and then after that... nothing.

one of the good things with apple is that they make their devices to appear a lot more cool than they actually are. Example? No cut and paste is a feature. Just under a lot of pressure they will gobble up and put this "amazing new feature that lets you actually copy from one side and paste to the other"... Ridiculous.

Nokia should do the same... The ads are great and are targeting a wide audience already. The "offline as it happens" took giggles out of my wife and the "journey starts here" was praised by my geek friends... So what are they waiting for?!

Its about time...

Even motorola (that company that was selling their breakfast so it could afford to have lunch) made a teaser about droid... And a very good one. I got interested in the droid just because of the cool ads like droid does and the cartoon-ish ones...

iirc, its verizon, not motorola, that's doing the droid pushing.

and apple makes for good attention grabber, thanks to its long term evangelical fans (and just as many anti-fans). And with attention follows ad sales.

so slap a apple related headline on any ad laden page, and watch the page views and money flow...

Re: xkcd #662, where's the N900?

I've thought for a while an n900 would be better than an eee for this application:

http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/new_pet.png

It has 2 cameras built in, so doesn't need the extraneous webcam, has an accelerometer based snse of balance and has python support out of the box...
