N900 Video FPS
 

I noticed that the N900 records at 25 FPS (I assume it is progressive frames).

However playback seems to be at 30fps unless you are watching at full WVGA resolution where it will playback at upto 25fps.

I wonder if this is why some of the sample videos are looking at bit jerky?

25 FPS is the PAL standard (used in Europe), why should that be a problem ? I think the optimal viewing for your eyes at probably at the 23.97FPS which is the cinema standard.

29.97 (approx 30) FPS is the standard in North America.

Options are always nice though, and most TVs can run either standard nowadays.

I wonder if there is an option to film at 30FPS (or higher) at VGA resolution 640x480.

25FPS is a very useful standard as it allows one to convert to almost every other frame rate, and as you say its the PAL standard. 30FPS is the NTSC standard.

The TV out probably does a good job converting to NTSC for the USA, but the internal video player seems to playback at 30FPS as standard according to the specs.

it would also be interesting to know if one can record at standard DVD resolutions of 720x576 PAL or 720X480 NTSC native resolutions, rather than having to re-render.

I don't care what anybody said...25FPS is NOT GOOD ENOUGH. When i watch video and compare 25FPS to 30FPS, the 30FPS are ALWAYS smooth. Don't make excuses and say that 25FPS is ENOUGH for the eyes..it is NOT ENOUGH.

25 FPS is plenty if that rate is maintained. (Most films are 24FPS.) However, the video recording capability of the N900 is clearly claimed to be "up to 25FPS". The key words being "up to".

From every sample video I've seen, the N900 drops frames. It is noticeable and annoying IMO. However to be fair, it was always with "pre-production firmware". While I hope this issue will be fixed before release, I would not count on it.

They're throwing in the old 1.2009.42 firmware in there on production devices.
So I reckon it won't be fixed when we first got them, only through regular firmware updates.

Cinema Film is shot at 24FPS so even lower than 25FPS. Most of the world that watches PAL TV is at 25FPS (actually 50 fields per second). And of Course Trued HD 24P is at 24FPS.

If you are not seeing smooth video the issue is poor frame rate conversion of your device media player due to watching the the shot movie at a different frame rate than what it was originally shot at, which was the reason for my original post.

It appears the N900 shoots at 25FPS but plays back at 30FPS. Most of the web also uses 30FPS and generally sites like Vimeo do a good job of conversion.
